Nice new barn you guys have. Surprised at the empty seats though.

BTW, you limited Clarkson to 65 seats. :(

There were a lot more than 65 Clarkson fans in attendance.

As for the empty seats, as I noted before, if we'd built a barn we could fill regularly (particularly against non-conference opponents with the Amerks playing downtown) it would have been shortsighted and aiming too low. We intentionally aimed high with the goal of growing the fan base. Clarkson doesn't sell out every game either.

(As a side note to any USCHO staff who may be reading: USCHO's attendance stats for prior seasons [like this one: http://www.uscho.com/stats/attendance/division-i-men/2013-2014/] list 4300 as RIT's max capacity, which has severely deflated our Cap.% for all of those years.)

Attendance was 3,500 so not too many unsold seats. A lot of people just choose to leave their seats to stand along the rail which unfortunately makes it look more empty than it is

Good game for the Tigers tonight. Superb job by MacLean, even if he got in a few sticky situations. The second goal wouldn't have been saved by most goalies. I really liked the intensity of all the players. One criticism is that early in the game RIT seemed to not be able to get shots on goal despite controlling the puck for long stretches in the first. However, I LOVE that there are FINALLY players playing in front of the opposing net and in a position to slam home rebounds. Looking good so far!

The lack of shots was shown maddeningly on the power plays, where RIT held possession for long period of time and took no shots. The first two games (counting the exhibition) saw a lot more of them just throwing pucks at the net, and being rewarded. I think they tried to get pretty since they were playing a better team. Throwing pucks at the net always works!

The real take away this weekend is that we beat St. Lawrence 5-2 and didn't lose to them 10-2. How could that happen?!

Also, who ever keeps saying the Arena is sold out, stop.

Totally agree - we played better than the shot count might otherwise indicate but we seemed to want to get fancy tonight. In the late stages of the game I found my self saying "Shoot - get some pucks to the net and let's see what happens!". Also 4-5 more players were out of the line-up - most of the freshmen so that didn't help as the 2 freshmen brothers on D have played a lot so far and have speed and losing them slowed down our D. Also they moved another speedier D up to fill in the void up front with the loss of the other forwards. They ended up playing their top forward line a ton and while they played well, I think they were gassed by the end. Still - a great game and tons of compete right to the end and getting more players back will only mean they get even better.

One note - being new to the college game, I was surprised to see Clarkson's pep band at the game and performing in the stands - is that normal? I found it really annoying - especially as they played over announcements and the music at stoppages.

We were warned that Clarkson was a big and physical team coming to the GPC, and that was not an overstatement. The good news is that the Tigers stood toe-to-toe with them, and then some. And, we finally have some big boys of our own. In spite of the outcome, it was a very entertaining game, and I think I detect some old "Tiger hockey" being played again. TG for that. Niagara only managed 13 shots against those guys. Losing bigtime to St Lawrence last night, too, are they on the downswing this year?

Clarkson should not have been allowed to bring their pep band. It was a disaster, and totally ruined my collegiate hockey experience. One arena, one band.

Many fans wandering, and looking for their seats through the first period. Nice to have the new attendees, but they have to learn NOT to stand in the aisles while doing so. Some student/ushers are diligent in this regard, others not so much. This all will probably resolve itself as we all get used to the new palace.

Watching Matt Abt. He played big, played well, and never lost his cool in those skirmishes in front of the net. Kudos. Keep up the good work.

A few notes - In the postgame on Friday, Wilson said he would give chances to some players on Saturday who didn't play Friday - that is why some players sat. We played a full roster, but have enough players to play full and have scratches which will be useful when injuries inevitably happen.

A lot of (non-AHA) schools have bands that travel. I haven't seen many, but in their defense - they don't have a radio to communicate with the DJ and announcer like our band does to get playing time. Last time they were here they played over our band a bunch too. I find it annoying, but their other option is to not play. I'm not really sure how other schools handle it.

When Cornell brought their band to the bca it seemed more coordinated

A friend and I checked with "Guest Services" last night - the ushers are supposed to be telling people to wait until a stoppage to find their seats, but a few have not been we noticed. We also noticed that some of the ushers don't even know where the seats are anyway and are of no help to people. Hopefully this becomes less of an issue as the season goes on.

Re: >>>>>RIT TIGERS... The Polisseum, just like the Ritter only more of us!<<<<<

I for one love the atmosphere that having two bands brings. It makes for a more electric and exciting environment. While teams are battling it out on the ice, the fans are battling to out chant/cheer/play the opposition in the stands. Obviously you much prefer to win the games where the other team has lots of fans...

But I still loved the back and forth. Did anyone notice that Clarkson pretty much only has one chant? "Let's go tech!" Figure that one out..

Clarkson's band had a mic to communicate and coordinate with the Corner Crew, DJ, and RIT pep band. The biggest problem is that they kept the button down on their mic to talk so that others could not coordinate. I believe the DJ started one time and may have pumped the volume over the Clarkson band on purpose because of that.

Re: >>>>>RIT TIGERS... The Polisseum, just like the Ritter only more of us!<<<<<

RIT played pretty well and I think it was important that the Tigers came out with a split this weekend. MacLean was maddening to watch with how often he wandered out of the crease. Luckily that didn't cost him. I thought that the first goal probably should have been handled better if he was able to not allow the rebound.

I love that RIT is getting back to the formula that won them a lot of games. They still need to get more shots on the power play, but they had people in front. I thought the defense played pretty well in front of both Roby and MacLean. Those are keys and if they get better at this, it's going to be a successful season.

My apologies for the misinformation then.

It's a historic/tradition thing.

From Wikipedia:
In 1913, the name was changed to Thomas S. Clarkson Memorial College of Technology, which was used in a shortened version as Clarkson College of Technology or CCT.
...
On February 24, 1984, the school officially became Clarkson University, although the pep band's rallying cry at hockey games is still "Let's Go Tech!". The school and its hockey team have carried the nickname "Tech" since the 1896 founding. "CCT" is still printed on older school property and equipment.

Overall from watching on TV this weekend, I thought there was a lot of positives to take away. Hustle was there which I love. Also it seemed like RIT carried much of the play which is very good. As far as SOG, it's a worthless stat, but I do think that RIT could shoot a bit more. I wasn't overly impressed with either goalie this weekend. Neither stood out but fortunately neither cost RIT the game(s).

Clarkson band is always like that. Or at least they play over the Cornell pep band and the announcer at Lynah sometimes. The worst is that idiot in the cowboy hat that plays the trumpet. Ugh. If Clarkson would coordinate better I would enjoy it but since they don't I find it annoying. The Corner Crew should just chant "Clarkson Sucks!" (unless that is too un-PC for the administration now) when the Clarkson band plays. The Lynah faithful chants "Section O Sucks!" (visitor's section) when the Clarkson (or any visiting band) band plays.

I would think it's likely to expect a BC band this weekend. BC brings a band to Cornell so I would think they bring one everywhere but maybe not.

I thought Ruby was better than MacLean. MacLean got lucky a couple times, and to me the first goal was a bit rough to take. It will be interesting to see who gets the start against BC. I suspect it will be Rotolo getting his "turn".

We got a "I believe that Clarkson's band sucks" cheer going in the Corner Crew. The pep band did not join in though.

You're breaking my heart man. I wish we were in a league where this was an every game occurrence. Traveling bands / fans add a lot to the atmosphere, I just wish (as others have stated) the execution / coordination between both sides was a bit sharper.

I have always thought one of the most interesting aspects of college hockey was getting to see the traditions that other schools have for their teams.

That would have been difficult considering the rebound was off of the defenseman, not off of MacLean.

We did not play a full roster on Saturday. We only had ten forwards dressed. With Miller and Schuler injured, and Mikowski and Goldberg out, we only had 10 forwards available.
