Any word on a pre-season poll and article? We're only a few weeks away!

Not yet. On the Women's side, The CHA poll just came out and RMU has their exhibition tomorrow, so I'd expect the AHA one next week or even the week after.

AHA preseason media conference call is next Thursday (September 25) so you can expect the poll then.

I meant more like a center-ice hanging board with video

I know. You said the video boards looked "decent sized", and I was confirming that they were plenty big enough to see well.

I will mention that from the top row at center ice I also thought the band sounded good, louder than they would have been at the same distance in Ritter.

The volume is there for most of the instruments, but the bottom -- the sousaphones -- was clearly attenuated.

At the Ritter, there were mics on the band to run them through the PA (which is how we picked the band up on the radio, via our PA feed). Not sure if they are planning that at the Polisseni Center or not.

Re: >>>>>RIT TIGERS... The Polisseum, just like the Ritter only more of us!<<<<<

I thought the arena was great inside. Felt a bit like Ritter, except with the addition of modern amenities that the old barn sorely lacked. One I especially am relieved to have seen is the presence of the Family/Assist bathrooms inside the arena. For someone who sometimes brings his daughter who isn't old enough to be sent in alone but is too old to be brought into the men's room, this is Huge. But as far as the real hockey-related stuff... the Video boards are fantastic (although slightly obstructed by the nets as mentioned previously); The sound will probably be much better when there are actually people in a majority of the seats; and The view from my seats is great despite being farther away (I stayed in the back row like I was at Ritter). I miss being able to walk all the way around the inside of the arena, but I think I'll get over it. It all looks good so far. Let's hope the team adds to the atmosphere with some exciting hockey and a few more wins.

The only thing that I haven't seen or heard talked about is the so conspicuous lack of nearby parking. Has anyone even hinted at a possible solution to that, even if only in the long term? S Lot is the closest and it is quite a walk. Not so bad now, but in January? Yikes. I wonder if the hallways from the Student Union through the gym and Ritter would be open for walking through if anyone wanted to park in D Lot? I guess we'll find out. And don't anyone through U Lot at me. Unless you get to the game around 5:00 or so, there's no way you're finding a spot in that lot.

I agree that I will miss the ability to walk all the way around the ice surface (due to the club seating areas).

I have not heard anything about traffic, but have some suggestions if anyone from Athletics looks at this:
1) shuttle service from parking lots to Ritter. This may be tough to manage post-game, but I'm sure they can figure it out. This will also allow people to park in other lots (E,F,G,H) if needed.
2) move the tennis courts to the front of campus, and make that a parking area (this isn't a short term solution)

I would be willing to bet that expanded parking such as moving the tennis courts was discussed and tabled for now due to cost. Expenditure for the rink was a stretch and cost reductions were most likely needed in many areas... and parking was probably one of them. We can get by with the existing parking lots for now, even though it's inconvenient. Actually, as long as we can take the inside route from D, the distance is not much different than parking in U and walking inside to the Ritter.

Here endeth my objection to Plexiglass. I didn't hear him say this... thanks for posting. If this will help reduce head injuries, I'm all for it. :)

There are also very subtle but interesting features of the new plexiglass that are also designed to reduce injuries. The plexiglass at the end of each bench is actually rounded instead of squared off as would be necessary with real glass. This avoids the need for extra padding at the corners.

Also, the rounded plexiglass is spring loaded at the edge away from the ice. Therefore it will give (spring) when hit, absorbing some of the force away from the player.

Some of the things that impressed me about the new rink are all of the small details present if you look for them. The Tiger logos on the end of each row of seats, the plexiglass system mentioned above, the art present on the Hall of Fame wall when viewed from a certain angle, the picture of the old Ritter pressbox they hung in our new WITR broadcast booth, the foot rail present at all standing room locations, and the list could go on.

The railing around the standing room areas, with the "table" if you will for drinks, etc. is awesome! A great addition

Yes, the more time you spend in the rink, the more you appreciate the effort that went into the details. It's not just a big empty new ice arena... it's already very personalized as "Home of the Tigers". A big "THANKS" to the architects/designers who put so much thought into this!

True, but I wouldn't bet on D being open. It was almost always closed last year and I've heard there will be tons of youth hockey at the Ritter so I'm assuming it's only going to get harder to get in D this year.

Re: >>>>>RIT TIGERS... The Polisseum, just like the Ritter only more of us!<<<<<

Regarding parking, the Institute has repeatedly claimed that D Lot, S Lot and R Lot are all within 1/8 mile of the arena. But I checked with Google Earth and that's not true even if you measure in a straight line -- not even close. Add in actual walking distance and you're looking at a third of a mile, easy -- more from the far corners of D or S. 1/8 of a mile from the Polisseni Center box office, as the crow flies, gets you to the Sentinel, the far corner of the library, or the far side of the Lowenthal building. Heck, the former length of U-lot was an eighth of a mile all by itself.

That distance obfuscation aside, I also have concerns about the number of spots available. RIT's math on the subject assumes half the crowd walking/shuttling from the dorms or apartments, and a 2:1 ratio of people to cars for the other 2,150 fans coming from off-campus. I hope they're right, but I fear they aren't.

Here's the FAQ on parking: http://www.rit.edu/fa/arenas/sites/rit.edu.fa.arenas/files/ParkingFAQ.pdf

Note this:
There has been some discussion about running a shuttle from S-Lot but no decision has been
made. Honestly, due to the length of time that it takes to load, travel, and then unload a
shuttle it is actually more time-effective for the guests to park and walk from their cars.
Hockey fans tend to be extremely smart and savvy parkers. Once the learning curve of the
first few games passes, these fans will find the best spaces, and navigate to them immediately
when they arrive on campus.

Sure, it may be more time-effective, but it's a hell of a lot colder.

I just have a really bad feeling about this whole thing. We may have traded needing to get to the arena early to get a seat, for needing to get to campus early to get a parking spot.

Um... I guess I just would like to be a smart (and happy) hockey spectator and not have to think a lot about parking. :)

I found that FAQ passage to be insulting - this is how you speak to a four year old when you're trying to trick him into thinking he's not getting shafted.

"honestly, due to the length of time that it takes to load, travel, and then unload a shuttle it is actually more time-effective..." translates to, "If we were to be completely honest we don't want to spend the money on a shuttle so let's focus on the time issue instead".

"Hockey fans tend to be extremely smart and savvy parkers" translates to, "I'm going to throw you an inane compliment in the hope that you will celebrate how proud you are to be a good parker and won't notice that I have not come up with a good solution to your problem."

And finally, "Once the learning curve of the first few games passes, these fans will find the best spaces, and navigate to them immediately..." translates to, "after a couple of games you'll all realize that you still need to get to the games hours before puck drop so that you can get that great space in S lot that is only 1/2 mile away rather than 3/4 of mile away. Oh and P.S. we don't care."

The new Zamboni is here... unfortunately there is no room to park it at the Polisseni and it will have to be parked in S lot!! ;) (See the Corner Crew Facebook page for a photo of the new Zamboni.)

Posting this all over the place, but if anyone still needs tickets to the RIT v BC game I'm selling my extra at (ticketmaster) face value.

I have tickets in section 125, row K, seats 1-6 for $22 each. Let me know if anyone is looking to pick up some more tickets.

To be fair, it would take a lot longer to use a shuttle system. There's never been a shuttle system in the world efficient enough to be faster than a 1/3 mile walk. The drive around campus alone would take longer, not to mention the loading and unloading time.

The solution is not buses, the solution is more parking closer to the building.

Guys, there's an easy solution to this.
