Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS - Roaring into the postseason <<<<<

"Two of those are his linemates, wingers Josh Mitchell (12-26 – 38) and McGowan (14-19 – 33). Their combined 113 points make them the second-highest scoring line in NCAA Division I, good for 50.5 percent of RIT's goal scoring. They've taken 29 percent of the Tigers' shots, are plus-50 and are important to RIT like 32 degrees is important to ice."

50.5 percent of our scoring, jeez

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS - Roaring into the postseason <<<<<

Reprising this from the prior thread. Bentley losing is phase one of the 4 point plan for getting the #3 seed. The #3 seed is important since that means RIT will not play Robert Morris until the AHA championship game.

4 POINTS: First round bye, 2nd round home playoff series against Mercyhurst as 4 vs 5 matchup unless Bentley loses to both Sacred Heart and Holy Cross (RIT will become 3 seed and play highest ranked winner from opening weekend - likely Air Force or Holy Cross) OR Air Force sweeps Canisius (RIT will play Air Force in the 4 v 5 matchup). If BOTH happen, RIT be the 3 seed and Mercyhurst will drop to 6, meaning RIT v Mercyhurst remains the most likely 2nd round matchup)

3 POINTS: First round bye, home playoff series against Mercyhurst as 4 v 5 matchup in the 2nd round.

2 POINTS: First round bye IF Air Force does not sweep Canisius, 2nd round playoff series will be AT Mercyhurst in the 4 v 5 matchup. If Air Force does sweep Canisius, RIT will host a first round playoff series against either AIC (if Niagara gains 2 or more points against RoMo than AIC does against Army....don't hold your breath) or Niagara (most likely).

1 POINT: First round bye if Air Force does no better than a split against Canisius, 2nd round playoff series would be at Mercyhurst if Bentley manages 1 point against either Sacred Heart or Holy Cross, otherwise it will be at Bentley. If Air Force does take 3 or more points, RIT will play the last place team (same scenario as above) as the 6 seed in the first round.

0 POINTS: First round bye if Air Force takes no more than 1 point AND Holy Cross does not beat Bentley. 2nd round playoff series would be at Mercyhurst unless Bentley ties Holy Cross and loses to Sacred Heart (since Bentley and Canisius both need to take points to maintain our bye) in which case the series would be at Bentley. If Air Force captures a win (or two ties) and/or Holy Cross beats Bentley, RIT's first round series will be against AIC or Niagara. If one of those things happen, RIT will be #6 and play the last place team, if both happen they will be #7 and play the 2nd last place team. In both cases it will either be AIC or Niagara.

A couple of things. I messed up on one minor detail here in the "0 points" section - as mar7967 pointed out below, two Air Force ties will not actually allow Air Force to pass RIT regardless of RIT's results this weekend.

The other is that getting into 3rd (a result I still find a little unlikely, although the least likely result - Sacred Heart beating Bentley - has already happened) is not an absolute requirement for avoiding Robert Morris in a potential semi-final. All that would have to happen is one of the lower seeds that plays the first weekend would have to beat either the 2 or 3 seed in the quarters. Then that team plays RoMo and the two middle teams left would play each other. Personally, I'm not really fussed about the 3 seed. I'm going by the assumption we'll have to play RoMo sooner or later anyway, and it may actually be an advantage to stay at the 4 seed and play a Mercyhurst team at home that we just whipped where both teams had the week off, then say Air Force in the 3 v 6 matchup where AF played last weekend.

Wow 6-0, RIT destroying Mercyhurst at end of two.. Garbowsky is playin like a man possessed. Looks like the boys are getting hot at just the right time.

Not to discount the team, but it helps when Mercyhurst's former starting goalie is injured.

True, but that doesnt keep Mercyhurst from scoring, especially when they have second most goals in AHC : )

Yep, Rotolo made the statement tonight that he is the "the guy". Puts up a shutout in the biggest game of the year. Sorry Ruby, but you can enjoy the Senior Night celebrations from the bench.

All in all a complete domination by the Tigers. Mercyhurst looked like they didn't want to be there at all.

8-0

Nice win. Best part is that they were winning all the little battles right to the very end.
Nice to see 60 minutes of hockey even with the big lead.
The win just makes tomorrow's game all the more important. They have to come out with the same or even more energy tomorrow because Mercy Hurst sure will. They need 1 point and the Tigers need 2.

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS - Roaring into the postseason <<<<<

Well that was fun. I don't think a different goalie would have made much of a difference with the type of goals RIT scored, especially early. Maybe 5-0 instead of 8-0 if they have a good game. Not much they're going to do on those first two goals which really set the tone.

As far as our goalies go, that was about as low-stress of a shutout as you can possibly have considering the score and the (lack of) quality of scoring chances Mercyhurst created. I think their best chance was the post they hit on a 2 on 1 in the first period - and I believe it was already 2-0 at that point. I wouldn't be surprised to see either goalie tomorrow night; I'm glad I don't have to make the decision.

Interesting to see Niagara beat Robert Morris (even if RoMo has nothing to play for), I would hate to end up at 6 and have to play them in the first round. Canisius is up 2-0 after two though on Air Force, so we're potentially 20 minutes away from clinching that 1st round bye. If Air Force does end up losing tonight and Holy Cross beats Bentley and we beat Mercyhurst, that would make our most likely 2nd round opponent Holy Cross...who had success at the Polisseni earlier in the year.

Oh and that shortie Garbowsky scored was filthy. Man I'm gonna miss him next year. Mitchell is also turning into quite the playmaker. Hopefully one or two of the other underclassman can develop some chemistry with him next year; he made those first two goals with great vision finding guys wide open with space.

Actually, RIT needs one point for home ice in the quarterfinals, and Mercyhurst needs two. As I mentioned above, a loss means RIT goes to Mercyhurst (assuming the AF-Canisius result holds), a tie means Mercyhurst comes here, and a win means we could reach the 3rd seed IF Bentley loses to Holy Cross (which would also move them to 6th, again assuming tonight's AF-Canisius result holds)

Ciampini scored for Union tonight, so he remains one goal ahead of Garbowsky for the national scoring lead.

Felt like I was watching a game from 4 years ago. Great game tonight, some very pretty goals scored, glad Rotolo got the shut out. Was a lot of fun to be at the game

The last time RIT scored 8 in a regular season game was a 10-0 win at Sacred Heart in 2012.

Last night's blowout brought back memories of some past D-3 seasons. In watching the team play so well, I have to wonder why Coach Wilson's teams always start the season so slowly, and then scramble at the back end of the season when they finally "get going". It's so glaringly consistent that there must be a reason.

Did I hear the Corner Crew with a new cheer??? I wasn't sure I would live that long.

Last night's renditions of the respective national anthems were absolutely AWFUL. Not knowing the melody or lyrics to "O, Canada" is simply embarrassing. Brick City Singers sang like they looked. Have a rehearsal, guys, buy matching shirts, and then let the band do their usual superlative and inspiring job instead.

I wonder if it has to do with the quality of teams that RIT plays at the start contributing to the slower start. The defense is young (no seniors) so some of them may have needed to get used to the pace.

I'm curious as to what new cheer you think you heard. Everything that we did was either something we did all year or an old cheer. And if you have any suggestions for a cheer - start it and see if it catches.

Yes.

Five of RIT's six non-conference opponents are currently in the top 20 in the USCHO poll. Of those five, Minnesota is tied for first in the Big 10, BC and UMass-Lowell are 2nd and 3rd in Hockey East, and St. Lawrence and Yale are 2nd and 3rd in the ECAC.

To add, this is a common scheduling theme for Coach Wilson. What I think can be frustrating is that RIT has been typically scheduled against a conference favorite early on. This year it was at Robert Morris and at Air Force.

Empty net OT win.

Awesome way to finish out the season and start the playoffs. Tigers definitely playing their best hockey in maybe two years.

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS - Roaring into the postseason <<<<<

Way back at the beginning of January, did anyone think we'd be finishing the season in third place?

Heck did anyone think third place was realistic on Thursday?

As the radio crew noted, of the top five teams, only RIT is on any sort of a winning streak heading into the playoffs.
