Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS - Offseason 2011 - Dreaming About 2011-2012 <<<<<

Thinking about the grassy area between S-Lot and UC that really would be a great place for the new ice arena.

I have not heard any plans with this location, but I have brought it up to people who seem to have some insight before - the concerns with this location are traffic based - Farnum is not as effective for getting people out quickly after a game (compared to Lomb and Lowenthal on the north side), and there is a lot of concern that people would try to park in the UC lots for games, which would be a big inconvenience to the residents.

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS - Offseason 2011 - Dreaming About 2011-2012 <<<<<

Leave S lot with only right turns from the west exit and left turns from the east exit and that place can be empty very quickly. The UC lots issue might be harder to solve, but could also be handled with traffic control pre-game.

I haven't heard anything at all about location in the last couple of months, but what I heard earlier was that location was the front runner. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS - Offseason 2011 - Dreaming About 2011-2012 <<<<<

I think a lot of RIT's conference consideration is to see what teams end up where. I don't think it's a secret that RIT isn't overly thrilled with some of the AHA - but I have a bit of a hard time seeing RIT making trips to Alaska. I agree that I have a hard time seeing Canisius getting into the CCHA without their own rink. That may have worked with the CHA because that league was despirate.

I liken RIT's spot similar to Memphis when Conference USA blew up and a bunch of teams left. It's a weaker conference, but RIT becomes a bigger fish. Plus, if by some chance the ECAC has an opening, RIT will be in position to take it.

We don't have to worry about the Alaska factor. Four AHA teams are meeting with CCHA officials next Tuesday and RIT is not one of them (not surprisingly). If RIT were to move, it would remain in the East for sure.

My guess (and completely without source of any kind) is nothing is going on "behind the scenes" here.

Nobody saw the move to Division I coming either. I am pretty sure that the higher ups are paying attention to what is going on and figuring out the best course of action.

I agree with Komey something is going on behind the scene, in this envirorment just sitting around waiting to see what happens is a big risk of being left without a seat when the music stops...

I don't think RIT is really at such a risk. There is no indication the AHA is going anywhere. They may not be completely satisfied with the landscape and where they lay in it at the end of the day. But they'll have a place regardless.
And as to Komey's point, I was not implying that those in the know aren't paying attention to what's going on. That would be silly. I was just saying that I would bet they aren't "out there" actively seeking a new home... yet.

I agree. There obviously is a ton of "what ifs" still out there and some things happening. I am sure RIT is monitoring the situation but I doubt that anything major will happen. There are simply too many things that would have to happen for it to be attractive for RIT to change conferences.

You're kidding yourself if you think nothing is going on behind the scenes at RIT.
They never told anyone about D1, new locker rooms or a new rink until the day they wanted you to know.
Even the D3 liberty league was a surprise to many on campus.

But lets think about it this way:
-they are pushing Whockey to D1
-other sports are joining liberty league
-new rink is coming soon

Look up the second point and tell me that you still don't think anything is going on behind the scenes. Look what schools they are lining themselves up with.
And go walking thru the rink sometime and talk to some of the coaches, maybe they'll share something with you.

OK. Let's look at the Liberty League. Yes, many of those teams are in ECACHL. However... If RIT were ever to consider seriously upgrading the program and make themselves seriously competitive with non-AHA competition, wouldn't they possibly look at a way to start offering scholarships? That would involve a move of the entire athletic department to D-II (or D-I, which is at least highly unlikely). If that were to take place, the Liberty League would be history and RIT's alignment with CT, StL, RPI, Union, etc. would be out the window. I have no idea if any of this has any basis in reality outside of things said on this board (which is about as reliable as Wikipedia sometimes). But if any of this were a possibility, we'd also not know about it until it happenned.
Although now if they were to consider a move to D-II, they'd have a geographic partner of sorts in Robers Wesleyan if they were to pursue membership in whatever conference they are going to join.

There have been talks/rumors/etc about the Women's team going to D-I for almost as long as we've known the Men's team was going to play up. I don't know by whom that announcement would be taken as a surprise.

You are sounding incredibly arrogant right now. Now while I don't think RIT is sitting idly around I think whatever they have set up has been set up for awhile. Plans just might be moving faster than anticipated with all the commotion with the new conferences. I'm thinking RIT and ECAC had a deal in the works that pretty much said that RIT needed to build a bigger rink and to prove themeselves before they could join ECAC. If the CCHA takes schools from AHA RIT might join ECAC earlier than both anticipated. Especially considering RIT is slowly making all their head coaches full time which is a prerequisite for DI status I do believe.

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS - Offseason 2011 - Dreaming About 2011-2012 <<<<<

The scholarship issue is moot. RIT can (and probably will) compete in a league like the ECAC with zero athletic scholarships. There are several examples there already (Union anyone?). We've been down this path before, but a good financial aid package that is not based on athletics is very attractive to athletes who can still get an education even if they leave the team. The Ivies manage OK without athletic scholarships (some of them).

I really don't see RIT changing from DIII anytime soon (probably not ever) and I also see them working very hard to get the women's hockey to DI as well. It will be a comfortable spot for the admin. and trustees and it will serve RIT well (already has). However it shakes out ... RIT hockey will be just fine!

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS - Offseason 2011 - Dreaming About 2011-2012 <<<<<

Considering the worst possible situation is that RIT will be in a smaller conference that they will be co-favorites to win the league bid and have enough non-conference games where they can get some of those games at home. It's probable that Niagara and Canisius will certainly play them at least once every year.

I have no clue what is exactly going to shake out of all this, but one prediction I'll go out on a limb and make is that Canisius will not be leaving AHA for the CCHA. I just can't see them making the necessary commitment (i.e. being able to raise enough cash to get Pegula to agree to help them build an arena). I just don't think enough people in and around that campus give a hoot about the hockey team. It's all about basketball there (for those to whom sports matters at all), despite the fact that basketball isn't exactly reaping any benefits for them either.

This was also a prerequisite for Liberty League.

I know what you mean, but someone like Pegula cannot have any ties with an NCAA team anymore as it would be an NCAA violation. But your point is valid of them being able to gain the funds.

I thought that too (I remember talks on this forum about Golisano donating money for a new arena before the official announcement, and that it couldn't happen. But Pegula donated the $88 mil to Penn State. I am not a sabres fan, was this Penn State donation before he bought the sabres?

Yes. He donated way before. Probably the reason Golisano could not have been asked at the time. Who knows, maybe he will step up now.
