>>> RIT Tigers 2021-22 Season Thread <<<

For all the RIT Fans going to Tate Rink at West Point to see Army play SHU this afternoon, (I guess that would only be me.. lol, the only guy in Tate Rink behind the visitors bench wearing an RIT jersey, (it's a tough job but someone has to do it)), I believe the game starts at 4:05pm, unless something changed...

You are 100% right. I don't know what I was thinking. That's what I get for posting before coffee (and focusing more on the standings math...) It is a 4:05 start for Army/SHU, and a 7:05 Eastern start for RIT @ Air Force. (I may have been looking at Niagara/AIC which is a 1:05 start)

Air Force currently clinging to 6th with the tiebreaker over Niagara, whose 3 point weekend won't quite be enough for them to avoid the first round. AF need some help to continue to hold onto that spot if they lose, but that help would unfortunately have to come from games played simultaneously to ours.

I have Air Force winning the tiebreaker over Bentley with 7 points won out of 12 in the season series, Mar. They also won all three or four way ties they could find themselves in as far as I can see. Sacred Heart would hold the tiebreaker should AF win and SH lose, so the highest they can climb is 6th. They can only drop to 8th, so their worst case is hosting Niagara or Holy Cross in round 1 if Bentley and/or Mercyhurst can pass them for the bye tonight.

We'll know our opponent after tonight (as well as location), but right now all we know is that it will either be at Army (if we finish 5th) or at RIT, with the possible opponents for a series at RIT being one of Sacred Heart (this is our opponent if we finish 4th), Air Force, Bentley, or Mercyhurst (all potential 3 v 6 matchups).

EDIT: Army dominant early. Up 3-1 with a large territorial edge 13 minutes in. An Army regulation win would lock up a 4 v 5 RIT vs Sacred Heart matchup before a puck even drops tonight. And just like that it's 3-2 after a SH PP goal. Hoping to have it both ways - an OT game gives RIT a chance to win the 3 seed but also locks up the 4.

Again, I am wrong. Rough day for me :) I misread my notes and had the 4 AF/Bentley games was Win-Loss-OT Win-OT Loss, but that 3rd game was a regulation win, so 7 our of 12 it is.

3 goal comeback in a 6-6 SO win for Sacred Heart means any kind of win for us wraps the 3 seed up. Otherwise it's another playoff series with Sacred Heart.

I'm good with the Sacred Heart series given the alternative was an Air Force series.

Hard to believe this is the first time we're hosting a 2nd round series since 2014-15. Although granted we were set to host Air Force as the 3 seed when COVID all happened.

Two top four finishes in 8 seasons, and we didn't even get to play one of them out. Blech. Hopefully scholarships turn out to be a game changer, because that's downright mediocre.

The other teams in the league got better and RIT didn't. Though at least the other teams have rotated a bit (AIC aside). Most of the teams in the conference have had both up years and down years. RIT has mostly just had middling years. Our recruits have had a lot of scoring coming out of juniors but that mostly hasn't translated to scoring in the NCAA, especially our defensemen. It is disappointing, and while I hope things improve with scholarships, it will also be a bit sobering if that's the only thing that allows us to compete in the modern AHA. Union won a national championship without scholarships; why couldn't RIT?

I think it's fair to say things have gotten harder without scholarships in NCAA hockey as a whole since we made the frozen four/Union won their championship. Since then Union's had two really good regular seasons but collapsed in the playoffs (ECAC semis loss and a 10-3 loss in the NCAA's to Penn State one year and a QF exit to a significantly lower seed in the other), and outside of that have largely languished in the bottom half of the ECAC in the other 5 seasons...and that's in a conference that's probably not as good as it used to be vis-a-vis other conferences too. The last real NHL'er on their roster was back in 2014 as well (Daniel Carr) and even he was/is more of an AHL/NHL tweener who spent half his time in each league.

Yeah, I guess Union had a bit of a perfect storm there. Kind of like RIT in 2010, but moreso. I just hope the scholarships work out and we can go back to competing for championships.

Announced today the utica college/university will host its 1st round d3 tournament game on Saturday 3/19. Same day as the AHA championship. wonder how this is going to work out.

I'd imagine they'd have Utica play in the afternoon with a 1pm start, then have AHA finals at 7. I don't think they'd put the AHA finals in the afternoon. Either way, I'll be at both, so hopefully some Utica folks that go to the Utica game stick around for the finals. A good crowd in Utica is second to none.

AHA does list a 7:30 start time for the final. I'd imagine that was in the contract with the AUD.
Atlantic Hockey Championship (Adirondack Bank Center/Utica, N.Y.) - March 19

7:30 p.m. ET: Championship: Semifinal 1 Winner vs. Semifinal 2 Winner
Additionally, Utica University lists a 2pm start for their 2nd round game on the same day, as posted here: https://uticapioneers.com/sports/mens-ice-hockey/schedule
Just better hope that game doesn't go to too many overtimes :)

I'm rooting for four overtimes. Count them. FOUR!

Anyone know if the games will be on TV this weekend? Historically they have been, but my guide is currently saying they are not :-/

It does not appear so (or discussions are still happening).
The weekend preview lists Flo, but no TV. https://ritathletics.com/news/2022/...d-heart-in-atlantic-hockey-quarterfinals.aspx

Previous home weekend previews have listed TV channels, like this example: Watch (Local): MY18 (Ch. 18 and over the air Ch. 46.1) (from https://ritathletics.com/news/2022/2/3/mens-hockey-hosts-aic-in-atlantic-hockey-doubleheader.aspx)

I was just looking through the Pairwise rankings for the first time in a while, and I'm shocked to see how poorly the ECAC is doing. Atlantic Hockey is clearly no longer the doormat. With the exception of Quinnipiac and a pretty good Clarkson bunch, the AHA provides quite a bit more depth now. I know it's been mentioned a few times in these forums about getting RIT out of Atlantic Hockey and into the ECAC, for both better competition and alignment with the other Liberty League schools, but staying in the AHA seems to be the right move right now. I wonder if this is just a short term post-covid blip, or something more. Future doesn't look bad for Atlantic Hockey, and that's exciting.

On another note, interesting weekend for an RIT team that only looked any good for maybe 2 or 3 periods (outside of Scarfone, who was just superb). It was enough, and now we get another classic Air Force matchup in my hometown rink at the AUD. Cool to see my two hockey worlds collide! (Corner Crew chants of U-TI-CA we're awesome tonight. Never thought I'd ever hear that, freakin loved it)

I hope RIT brings a good corner crew/band for Friday night. That building can absolutely rock of you've got the right fans in there. I'll be bringing a crew of 10 myself, converting a few locals into Tiger fans for a weekend.

Hopefully all this excess travelling slows down AF a little. Didn't watch their games, but it looks like their offense was on fire this weekend on paper. Glad to see this classic matchup to give me some memories of our good buddy Jason Torf while I was at RIT... I'll never forget that guy...

The ECAC has been severly hurt by several teams not playing last year. The Ivy's, RPI, Union all shutdown and lost significant portions of their teams due to transfers to other schools. The entire league is basically rebuilding now.

This really shines a light on how much RIT fans owe to the RIT administration who reversed their initial decision to shutdown all sports in the fall of 2020, and to the hockey players who put together and presented a compelling case to keep their season alive. With the great news about scholarships recently and the success of this year's team so far, it would be been a complete shame if RIT hockey had shutdown last year and been in the situation that the ECAC is in now.

I'm right there with you on this one!!! That UTICA chant was awesome for this Yorkville native, RIT ITFM 94. been going to games at RIT since 91 and Utica AUD games growing up. Haven't been to an RIT game at the AUD since last time in ECAC west semis back in the last year of D3? looking forward to seeing another game at the AUD. Can't wait to rock the AUD!!!! I"m challenging any RIT alumni I know in Utica area to get their butts to the AUD and cheer loudly for the Tigers!!!!!
