RIT Tigers 2014-2015

Re: RIT Tigers 2014-2015

I'm not sure how all those other teams manage injuries, then. Harvard had 19 players total? That's not even enough to fill a gameday roster if everyone's healthy. How is that possible?

Northeastern only had 12 healthy skaters for at least part of a game last year, and they only had 13 when they started to get hot. There have been tournament teams over the years that didn't have more than 15 or 16 skaters. Empty space on a line chart is pretty common. Rosters tend to be a little more stable once the season starts at scholarship schools, because a player who is on at least a partial scholarship doesn't decide to quit the team because her class load is too heavy or she met the love of her life. In most sports, it seems that programs that don't give any dollars based on the student playing a varsity sport roster a couple of extras, because those kids can drop the sport with less consequence.

How is it not? Many (most?) teams very rarely play more than 3 lines of forwards and 5 or 6 D anyway. That's only 14-15 skaters. That leaves room for 4-6 players to be missing with injury or available for intermittent play to give others rest.

In 2008-09, UNH went as far as the NCAA quarterfinals with only 15 skaters on their roster that year.

Some teams give the lion's share of minutes to 10-12 skaters regardless of roster depth, relying heavily on their first 2 lines and D pairings. The more relevant question then is why so many teams choose to have rosters of 24 or more.

Uh, isn't it normal to have four forward lines? Am I missing something here?

Sure, if you have enough players. However, most teams don't skate a fourth line regularly even if one is dressed. It wasn't that long ago where teams skated primarily two lines and put the third out there once in a while to buy a little extra rest. Now fourth lines get out about that much in some games, maybe not at all in others. The game is evolving, but it isn't as much of a four-line game as men's hockey is. Even though depth has improved a ton, there is still a drop from the kids on the first line to those on the fourth on the average team, particularly in scoring potential.

Sure. But since the fourth line gets very little ice time (sometimes 2-5 shifts/game and in some cases not even as an intact line), not having one typically doesn't really make a difference. Against ranked teams it wouldn't be unusual in many programs for the fourth line to not play at all anyways.

That is true if you have reasonable depth on the third line as well. RIT's third line is, arguably, most team's fourth line. There is a lot of dependance on the first 2 lines for offence and the injuries to Maugeri and Clayton have hurt them there. In my opinion, this team has over-achieved this year with their 5 wins. Coach should be pleased given the roster that he is dressing due to injuries, but we all know that that is likely not the case.

I agree. IMHO this team over-achieved last year as well. When you have a great goalie, she'll tend to steal games by low scores that you really otherwise had no business winning based on the team in front. The CHA championship game was perhaps the best example of that. RIT was outshot 63-25 and still managed to win. Without Binnington, the game likely wouldn't have been close. For the season, the team had a winning record despite being outshot, and 12 of its wins were by a single goal.

When you take away just a little offence from a team like that--whether due to graduations or injuries--, a winning record turns into a losing one very quickly.

Morgan Scoyne's injury is also hurting in particular on the power play since that's where she got most her points last year. She played a large role in setting up the plays that got us goals. But she should be back sometime this month.

Re: RIT Tigers 2014-2015

Binnington is a scratch for today's 3pm game.

Injury or healthy scratch?

Princeton started their #3 goalie who gave up all three RIT goals before being chased after 1st period. #2 Boughn shut down RIT the rest of the way en route to the OT win.

Re: RIT Tigers 2014-2015

Penn State plays RIT next weekend.

Penn State is 5-4-3 (0-1-1).

RIT is 5-4-3 (0-1-1).

That looks like a good one coming up.

Re: RIT Tigers 2014-2015

Any news on her health/ discipline?

I believe that Binnington was injured, hopefully back against Penn State. Also the three other injured players (Maugeri, Scoyne & Clayton) may be back against Penn State. Having these impact players return will help the offence. Basically get a full forward line back and will likely dress 4 full lines for the first time this season. Penn State is much improved, games will be interesting and the Tigers don't want to fall behind in conference standings after only getting one point against Lindenwood.

Nice shutout by Rackleff on Saturday.

Re: RIT Tigers 2014-2015

She has missed the last couple of games, shame if she is still hurt/ if she has to miss more of her senior season. Anything new?
