Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2013-2014 - Rocking The Ritter One Last Time <<<<<

I remember a few weeks ago Wilson on the WITR postgame mentioned how he initially gave the team to the upper classmen, and they weren't responding so he might give it to the freshmen to see what they could do.

He said the same thing tonight, pointing out that if you go with a freshman too early and it doesn't quite work out yet, and you have to sit him, he wonders what he did wrong... when it might not have been anything, just needing a little more experience. So he's cautious now. Plus it makes sense to see where the upperclassmen are at and to see how they progress from the previous year.

Glad to see Thompson got back out on the ice; he lost a few ounces of blood there.

I just made an RIT Hockey Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/RITtigershockey/)

Not to detract from this forum at all! But there's a ton of people who don't know of this forum/don't even use forums, who would be more apt to be part of a FB group. It also provides a much better platform for sharing pictures and video.

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2013-2014 - Rocking The Ritter One Last Time <<<<<

I think the new arena will help with this, especially for the student population, soley based on the seating. It was always hard to find other students who wanted to go to the games with me because no one wants to get to a game an hour early just to sit there so you don't have to stand. Everyone wanted to go to TC's, McGreggors or Beers of the World before the game. It's the culture of college students now, drink before everything. I think if people are guaranteed a spot to sit at the game, they're more apt to buy tickets.
I think this is an even bigger issue for the outside community. I've seen families come in 20 minutes before the game, have to stand (sometimes behind someone) and you know darn well they'll never, ever be back. Depending on the age of the kid, getting there that early and sitting around waiting isn't such a good thing.

Ticket sales were at around 3,500 for the outdoor game as of yesterday. So they'll probably approach 5k depending on weather, so it'll be a nice attendance bump.

Russell, were these the refs that you called out? I know the collapse of our D in the third was the pivot in the game, but these refs were simply inconsistent. The guy who ran in to our goalie in the 2nd would have been an easy call in every game I have seen in the AHA. Not that I'm thrilled with it, but that is what the AHA is about I guess. And they let punches go at the end of the first. The two penalties on AIC early in the 2nd seemed like weak calls, which is fine if that is the way the game was being called, but it wasn't being called like that at all.

StimulusRK, this is a nice idea. Could you make the page "public" (like the Corner Crew page) so that people like me who don't have FB accounts (and never will) can at least read the content. It's annoying when there are public links to FB pages (or anyplace for that matter) that require an account to view.

The other benefit might be that some people will see it, decide to sign up for FB, and participate. The big advantage here is that people can read without an account ... and many do.

I just checked the settings, I have everything set to "Open" - but I read more into it, and whereas a FB Page can be "public" (ie. you don't need a FB account to see), FB Groups are "open" (FB users only can see). I don't know why FB sets it like that, but I can't make it visible to non-FB users.

Groups are better than Pages (in this situation) because content is user generated, anyone can post whatever/whenever - whereas a Page (like the actual RIT Hockey FB Page) is run by one person/entity (RIT) and is meant to focus on that one person's/entity's posts. That's why I chose a "Group" over a "Page", it's more of just a message board like this, just looser and allows for easier content sharing.

I hope I explained that ok. You could make a pseudo "RITprof" FB account, and use it just for the group, that'd be your only option.

On the outdoor game: If it is successful, it will be done again. That's what we've seen for the most part. Frozen Fenway is going to happen every year until attendance tanks. On the other hand, the one they tried in Connecticut that several AHA teams participated in did not do well and was not repeated.

I am not sure of the deal that RIT and the Amerks have, but for everyone else: Nazareth, the Junior Sabres, High Schools, men's league teams, etc - there is a ticket guarantee reported to be 500 per team. Tickets are $10-$25, some cheaper for students. So you're looking at around a minimum of $10,000 to play a game there. I know Section V will have no trouble with that - my sons' games drew 800-1,200 most nights at Lakeshore and over 2,500 at ESL (now Bill Gray's) for the playoffs. For men's leagues, corporate use, etc, there's probably a cheaper flat per hour rate. For Frozen Fenway it's $5,000 per hour. Probably lower here.

My prediction is that Amerks will sell out. I think for the pro hockey crowd this is a bigger deal. RIT will be around 5,000. Women 1000. Most of the other events 1000-2000. When you throw in parking and concessions, I think this will make money, which means it may become and annual thing until people get bored with it.

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2013-2014 - Rocking The Ritter One Last Time <<<<<

On the Tigers' weekend - when coach Wilson wasn't giving me a hard time, he was making some good points - sometimes you play well enough to win and you don't (like outshooting Air Force 39-25 and running into a hot goalie) and other times you don't play your best and win anyway. Maybe the Tigers were owed some Karma.

That said, they still put together some good stretches of hockey, mostly on Saturday. AIC won the first period, but the Tigers dominated the rest of the game. In the 2nd period they had 23 SOG but only scored 2, but in the third, they had 3 goals on their first 7 shots.

On Friday, if they play that way against the top half of the league, they lose. But they were able to gut out a win by waking up after the tying goal and get the game-winner shortly after, and then played sound defense in the final minutes. Once Rotolo stopped the breakaway that happened right after Skirving's 2nd goal, the boys locked it down for the rest of the game.

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2013-2014 - Rocking The Ritter One Last Time <<<<<

I agree that was not the best hockey RIT has played. I think they played a total of 60 minutes of good hockey at best over the weekend. Luckily for the Tigers, AIC was not able to capitalize on their mistakes - especially on Friday. Saturday was better - but still not good. Getting the 4 points is crucial though.

Play like that against Niagara at Frontier and they will be looking at yet another loss to them.

The worst part of this is that we seem to be having the same discussion (playing incomplete games) over, and over, and over again. When will it end?

I believe it was $1500 (75 minutes) for our team, split between 2 teams ended up at 50 a person, steep but not horrible for what it could be

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2013-2014 - Rocking The Ritter One Last Time <<<<<

I wouldn't say it's an over reaction. Most college hockey fans wouldn't consider us a serious hockey program. Until we have a near perfect AHA record with an OOC record over .500, I don't think anyone can consider us competitive.

Holy overreaction! Sometimes teams just aren't going to have their "A" game. A large part of what separates great teams from good ones (and good ones from average ones) are that the better teams find ways to win when they don't particularly play well. In the long run, holding on to a tight lead late might be better for this team's psyche than if they just rolled them over like they did Sacred Heart last weekend.

As far as games like this somehow making us not a serious hockey program (LOL)...in 06-07 RIT lost to AIC at the Ritter on route to finishing 2nd in Atlantic hockey. In 08-09, they needed TWO late PP goals to turn a 3-2 deficit to a win (that team won Atlantic Hockey). In 10-11 RIT lost by FOUR goals to AIC en route to winning Atlantic Hockey. At this level, anyone can beat anyone. Look no further than Sacred Heart beating UMass Lowell this year.

Not competitive with whom? We split with St.L, tied (after a loss) Clarkson, and tied (beat) Penn State.

Not competitive with teams bound for an NCAA title, weekend after weekend. The Clarkson tie was nice, but does not define our program. HC beat BC for christ's sake, but no one realistically thinks of them as a good hockey program.

True no one from the ECACs ever goes on to the NCAAs any more. Well except those two teams from ECAC that played in the NCAA Championship Game...

Now has RIT had a weaker team than in years past? Yes.

Was last weekend perfect? No.

But it was yet another step in the right direction. I had the same thought Wilson did that well at least it's nice to not play your best on Friday and still get a win. Overall the last two weekends have given Tiger fans reason to have a positive outlook. Yes those are 8 points they should have, and they got them. Those games against the Eastern POD are going to be key and some Western POD Teams have already dropped some. When you also consider that RIT has only played one home game against a Western POD team and that no one they played in conference was head over heals better than them, you have to believe this team has a chance.

Forwards and in the Net I believe they are all set. The key is the defensive core. If RIT is going to improve and have a chance come tournament time they have to figure a few things out on the blue line. Right now I feel that Nolan Descoteaux is our best defensemen. I thought he played very well last weekend and loved his hustle. Need more good play like that. Tell you one thing, Wayne sticks with his guys. Kuqali had a game on Friday to forget about. He had bad give aways on the game tying goal and then had another give away on his next shift. He was right back out there on his next shift and in the line up on Saturday night. For Better or Worst Wayne sticks with his guys.

Yes, we can win games here and there against better leagues, which is good. We're still the 44th best team in the country right now (KRACH) out of 59.

Just to clarify.....we're on a 5 game win streak and are 5th in conference with less games played than the 4th place team.....we've got a freshman goalie playing lights out and a freshman forward putting up 2 points a game...

....and we're still complaining about not playing good enough.

Right. Got it.

I'll see you guys next week.

Unless their name is Josh Watson or Jordan Ruby.

(I know I implied I was quitting the thread for the week due to the usual clowns, but I had to get in a solid goalie zinger first)

Also add in Raibl who he doesn't seem to ever like to stick with. I was talking to him during the Saturday game vs St Lawrence and he said that he was benched because of a mistake he had on Friday.

I thought it was weird how it said in the season preview something like "we have four returning defensemen and Raibl will compete for time"??? He played in almost every game last year, although I suppose that just could have been due to not having very many defensemen.
