Because they are still a D3 school and moved up in hockey after the implementation of Divisions in the NCAA, they are still not allowed to offer athletic scholarships. (Note that Union College is in a similar situation.)Up to and including this year, RIT was a D3 program from a recruiting perspective. Except for Elmira, all of the schools that you mentioned are D1 programs that can either offer money (schollys) or prestige (Ivy). It is not surprising at all that Edge players looked elsewhere in the past as scholarship money is tough to pass up. As we all know, it is tough for any aid-based D3 program to compete with that.
Now that RIT is D1, judge their recruiting efforts going forward as they are on more of an even playing field with the programs you mentioned (except Elmira).
