But the good little sheep didn't want to cause problems, for the other team or the administration, and submitted.

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2012-2013 - Locked, Loaded, And Ready To Roar <<<<<

So your saying that the Garbo, the forward, should have known that the D was pinching in behind him, and where two Clarkson players are, one of which was also behind him, and yet give a pass to Noyes the D man on a SHG? As far as "assuming" comment, maybe I should have said instead of "assuming" Garbo should be able to count on his teammate playing the correct position and hustling. Your basically faulting a guy who hustled back and tried to make a play while three other players are nowhere to be found.

Oh, and you're correct, Noyes is the third man back after the goal is scored. I'm not impressed. If he stays in position on that play there isn't the breakout and thing might have turned out different.

I'm not trying to blame or vindicate anyone. This is a team sport and we need to start playing as a team - offensively and defensively. No one player is responsible for our disappointing season thus far.

I think the first thing we need to keep in mind is that this situation/sequence is not the norm. First; we are on a powerplay, which is a "Special Teams" situation; and second, the sequence of the puck glancing off a linesman on a zone clear, which ends up on the oppenents stick, at the opponents blue line, causing a breakaway; is probably not something you practice. From that standpoint, maybe just bad luck is to blame. Maybe we are parsing this too much. But, for the sake of argument...

As for Garbo; I'm pretty sure he should have or could have known that he was alone at the top of the Clarkson zone (along with Saracino) in that situation. Hence all his teammates were lower in Clarkson zone and less able to defend a breakaway taking place behind them. This was a broken play so everyone was caught off guard. I'm all for him going for the puck there "if" the puck was still in the Clarkson zone. It's worth it to try to keep the puck in the Clarkson zone for the PP. But the puck was outside the Clarkson zone, so even if Garbo steals the puck there, we still need to get all our players back on-side, so there was no offensive opportunity there. It became purely a defensive situation.

And, to be a complete hard-a**; if he's going to go for the steal or intercept there, he needs to come up with something. He didn't get the puck, the player's stick or the player himself. Actually the player he was going for, #21, was in *perfect* position for a rebound on #32's shot, if there was one. If nothing else he needs to make sure that, what became his guy, didn't have such a perfect position for a rebound.

If Garbo had instead skated back towards our goal in the middle of the ice, where he was originally, he would have been parallel with Clarkson #32, the goal scorer. He would have been between the puck handler and the eventual scorer, which would have made the pass much more difficult, if not impossible. Now I know this is all 20/20 hindsight and I don't expect him to have eyes on the back of his head, but I think he needed to be cognizant of other Clarkson players on the ice and actually look for them before he goes for the hero play there. He also should have trusted that his senior defenseman teammate (Saracino) had the puck handler contained (which it seemed like he did) and instead he should have been looking for other potential threats, like an open player behind him streaking toward his goal. Like I said earlier, we already gave up a SHG in the period, like 10 minutes before, so It's not like we didn't know Clarkson had the skills to do it again.

We can argue the team's playing philosophy of pinching the D-men, but from what I've seen, that's how we play, that's "Tiger Hockey" - aggressive. I guess we'll have to take that up with coach Wilson. I'd think if the coach didn't want his players to do that, they wouldn't keep doing it.

Wow. Go on vacation and I miss a lot.

First, I think part of the regimentation of the corner crew is that there is more than just them now. Add in a pep band, sponser announcements and dj control out of the corner and that is quite a bit to coordinate. There is less room for the spontaneous cheers that used to be a hallmark of the crew. But I agree that new cheers would be good.

I can't comment on the goals without seeing video.

And sometime it's not.

This seems to be a recurring issue this year but I am confident that it will get better as the year goes on - it already has.

Based upon giving up two SHG, I don't think it has.

I just think you were (are?) being too hard on Garbo while giving the other players out there a complete pass. I do agree Garbo could maybe have played it better, but there are three other skaters out there that should bear some responsibility.

We have been discussing this video recently, which was posted by Tom Naeger on 11/26. Most recently we have been discussing the 2nd Clarkson goal, which begins to unfold at approximately 1:03 in the video -

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2012-2013 - Locked, Loaded, And Ready To Roar <<<<<

The interesting thing with the crack down is (at least to my knowledge) There was never any solid punishment for saying the forbidden cheers. Just a threat that you might be kicked out. If everyone keeps doing it, are they really going to kick out everyone? But the good little sheep didn't want to cause problems, for the other team or the administration, and submitted. That's at least what I noticed. So why not in the words of Ed

Well they did give "Cowboy" a close door dress down after the UAH game and many of us thought that was well deserved. I do not believe he has been to the Ritter since, or he might have been for a couple games but after that he just shows up at Blue Cross or on the road...

Kerwing7 I give you this much, you made me look a gain and now I am really wondering why in the world Noyes decided to pinch in the first place, this off a draw if I remember correctly, puck is in the corner and never really came that close to going round the net in that direction, guy did make a fake, but then just reversed and threw the puck out of the zone. RIT likes to get that backside defenseman down low, but in this case RIT was in nowhere near in control of this puck and had all three forwards in that corner, he should have held the far point.

I'd love to be in a film session with Coach Wilson, but I am sticking to Garbo played that right. It really hockey 101, if you have a forward getting back in the play let him take the puck carrier. You back skating can then eliminate the pass while the advancing forward forces the puck carrier wide. If the pass does get through then Cino can take the back side and the other forward, again he is facing the other forward so he can easily adjust to the play. The forward has his back to the play and has to look over his shoulder to try and take the other guy. Hard to cover a guy you can't see. Basically, though to me this is a microcosm of the entire season. In this case two bad decision by defenseman and puck is in the back of the net and what hurts is that these are your two best defensemen. Mistakes happen and you live with them, but too many plays like this are happening...

I'd love to be in on the film sessions too, though these days, maybe not as a player.

It's probably time to put "Garbo-gate" to bed. He's a very good player and is only going to get better. Dissecting video highlights and playing armchair (or office chair) analyst was a fun little obsession for a while. Thanks for providing the video, Tom. Thanks to everyone else who played along.

Now that it's Friday and the weekend is here, it's time to look forward to the game(s) we have coming up. We can now turn back to supporting the team, instead of critiquing - which I think we all try to do respectfully and helpfully (at least most of the time).

We have an interesting contest coming up against our nemesis, Air Force this Sunday. These single game weekend match-ups, especially traveling to Colorado, are tough to take if you're on the losing side. Air Force has thus far struggled to find their game, much like we have. I have the fear that they are miraculously going to find their game this Sunday against us. Here's hoping they don't, but we do!

Air Force always shows up to play RIT hard. After being swept by Uconn they are going to be out for blood. If they lose, and lose bad to the tigers, Serratore might pop every vessel on his forehead :)

Luckily for us, Air Force hasn't managed to come out swinging after any of their early losses. They are right up there with RIT as far as Atlantic Hockey's most underperforming teams. Though I suspect it will be a close, hard fought game, I'm not sure that means much in the grand scheme. A win would be big for RIT though following their improved effort last week.

LOL...Coach Serratore just might be having one of those nights tonight, up 3-0 in the first 5 minutes against Mercyhurst, now 3-2 late end of 1st. I snapped a picture of the AF coach when they tied Army last season...hopefully this link works. Passionate guy!

Mercyhurst comes back from that 3-goal deficit and downs Air Force, 5-4. Marofsky and Durfee were the referees and I'd expect we'll see them Sunday night. Mercyhurst was 3-for-6 on the power play.

Seems to have mellowed:

It was the fourth straight loss for Air Force, which slipped to 3-7-3 overall and 2-4-1 in the AHA.The three-goal advantage was the biggest surrendered by the Falcons this season.

“My old boss, Randy Spetman, used to say, ‘tough times don’t last, tough people do,’” Serratore said. “We’re going through some tough times right now. That’s fine. We’ve got to get through it, we’ve got to deal with it, we’ve got to overcome it.”

Who would of thought that tomorrows game at Air Force would be between the 9th and 10th place teams in Atlantic Hockey? I know it's still the first half of the season and I have no doubt that one if not both of these teams will get on track and make a good second have run, but I would of never predicted this. Hoping for a RIT win (or tie).

Both teams will be pretty desperate for a win. If RIT can get a point or preferably 2, it sets them up nicely to get some momentum going into the close of the calendar year with 2 at home against Sacred Heart before a Wednesday game at Niagara.

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2012-2013 - Locked, Loaded, And Ready To Roar <<<<<

AFA has never failed to come "loaded for bear" (or tiger if you will) to a game with RIT.

On the other hand, I'm not so sure that RIT has ever "kicked it up a notch" for an AHA opponent (perhaps since the first couple of seasons) since the Tigers quickly assumed a position as one of the top teams in the AHA.

If one of these teams can look across the ice and see a strong opponent and rival and raise their game to a level well above what they've done to earn their current positions in the standings, then we might see one of them kick the season into gear and make some noise. The other one will probably be in for a very long season.

If both do, this could be one hell of a game because a lot is on the line.

Hate to be a downer, but it looks like it could be neither and this could be an uninteresting game between two AHA bottom feeders!! (Who would have thought that ever could be an accurate descriptor of an AFA-RIT game well into the season!!)

So in some interesting local news (I'm in Tempe..), ASUs club team downed Penn State last night 3-1. Big win for the club team and their fans down here. Now if only a rich ASU alum would just build them an arena for NCAA status...

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2012-2013 - Locked, Loaded, And Ready To Roar <<<<<

So I was thinking this morning about some of the back and forth I've read here about the state of the Corner Crew recently. As someone who helped come up with some of the current traditions (examples - repeating "It's all your Fault" the three times after "We want 3!", or the entirety of the Wir Haben Sechs chant) I feel somewhat responsible for some of the gripes some people have. Many things like that were done not so much at the behest of the administration but in response to losing control of DJ operations (and thus easy coordination) and a massive expansion in the numbers of people being part of the Crew. Witty one liners that might have once echoed through an arena filled with 1200 people, are now challenged to be heard even by just the entire crew. It's unfortunate, but it's the reality of the situation.

However, I'm here to suggest a solution. I really only can suggest because now I am living out in CT. At one time, the Crew used to make great signs to accompany their chants. The most famous for me was at an Elmira game ("Attention Elmira Players, For your girlfriends convenience the concession stand now serves hay") which stretched the length of the arena and unfortunately had to be taken down because it wasn't true.

Let's assume that the opposing team can read (a stretch for Canisius I know, but they had to get through the SAT's somehow) and give them something to think about that way.

Some of the thoughts I had were declaring the Ritter a no fly zone when AFA comes in. Having a sign that says Yipee ki yay, Mother-Pucker whenever MacLean is playing.

Anyway, go nuts, have fun. Let's cheer these boys to a better second half of the season!
