As far as fighting, one would think this would be a friendly game and the fisty cuff's could be put away for 60 minutes but yeah, somebody could lose it on the ice and that would probably be a bad thing.

*cough* Hudson *cough*

Favot, Murphy, & Haltigin 2010-2011 captains.

Congrats to all three. Great and experienced leadership is the key to the continued growth of the program.

I sure hope the fact that Burt is missing from this group is not a sign of future "news" out of Rochester. That would hurt.....:( :( :(

I'm hoping (maybe against hope) that maybe although he could well be the Tigers' best offensive player, maybe he either isn't or doesn't prefer to be "captain material".
I know it's a stretch and unfortunately something tells me that certainly isn't the case. The little I know about him (from interviews, and anecdotal evidence) contradicts that theory completely. I just don't want to think he might leave early. :(

I doubt this is a sign that he is leaving early. In all the past years, we have only had 3 captains. Last year was the first with 4. Maybe it was a trial thing and Coach didn't like how it turned out behind the scenes (in the locker room, practice, etc). Most teams only have 3 captains, and in my opinion, there is no need for a fourth.

I don't think Burt is necessarily captain material. He tends to be a puck-hog and forget about the rest of the team. This usually leads to turning over the puck to the other team. While he may be the best scorer, this doesn't necessarily mean he would make a good captain.

Also, if Coach did only want 3 captains, it makes sense to keep Favot and Murphy if they did a good job last year, and to make Burt the 3rd would have 3 forwards as captains and no D. I don't think I have ever seen that; usually at least one captain is a D (last year we had 3 F, 1D). Haltigin was a good choice to fill the defense Captain role in my opinion.

..only time will tell though

Re: >>>>RIT 2010 Offseason Thread-"You have to be a genius to go to RIT"

Burt is also a little smaller physically. It would hurt if he were to go, and based on what was written about him regarding the playoffs, he would seem like a choice for captaincy. But I do think there should be someone on the D to have a captaincy as well. Favot and Murphy were assistant captains, so I don't think it would be a good sign to have then LOSE the captaincy.

I suspect it was just a numbers game.

Re: >>>>RIT 2010 Offseason Thread-"You have to be a genius to go to RIT"

Or maybe it's that Burt seems like he likes to run his mouth sometimes, and Wilson doesn't think putting him in more contact with the refs would be a good thing :p

Re: >>>>RIT 2010 Offseason Thread-"You have to be a genius to go to RIT"

Re: >>>>RIT 2010 Offseason Thread-"You have to be a genius to go to RIT"

I would be surprised if Burt leaves early. I have heard a rumor of an RIT Tiger thinking of leaving early and I will say that it is not Burt. All though Matt Crowell's early departure last year suprised everyone.

Also remember just because someone is a big playmaker or scorer doesn't mean he is going to be a Captain. Plenty of guys in College and the NHL who are examples of that...

Army has 4 captains next season, which is a first for them in quite some time, and one of them is Goal Tender Jay Clark. I'm interested to see how it's going to work for them

This isn't new territory necessarily.

Ty Conklin had the "C" on his sweater at UNH.

Pertaining to RIT, Jamie Morris had an "A" on his sweater his senior year.

I guess I'm surprised the NCAA Ice Hockey Rules Committee hasn't tried to end such practices yet (personally, I could care less either way).

Goalies cannot interact with officials in the capacity of a captain during a game situation.

Goalies cannot interact with officials in the capacity of a captain during a game situation.

However, this does not bar a goalie from being a captain for informal things such as captains practices, motivating the team, acting as a role model, etc.

Totally agree - I was responding to jpd's mention of the rules committee ending the practice, which they address in the rules. Outside of the game situation you can't stop a leader from leading and it would be a shame to take that honor away from a deserving goalie.

I wonder why that is.
I know in the NHL and AHL the goalies aren't even allowed to wear the C or the A.
Seems like it wouldn't be such a bad thing to have a captain or alternate on the ice at all times.
Then some of the less bold refs (who sometimes obviously don't feel like getting yelled at by incensed coaches) wouldn't have to venture near the benches if they didn't have to. They could just stay at the end and talk to the goalie.
Maybe they don't want the goalies having to skate all over the ice to get to the refs when they've got something to complain about?

Besides the skating aspect it may also have to do with goalies not serving their own minor penalties.

Which, despite the obvious negatives and logistical issues, I would love if they did have to serve their penalties. It would make things a little more interesting, if nothing else.

Re: >>>>RIT 2010 Offseason Thread-"You have to be a genius to go to RIT"

I heard years ago, and I am not sure how accurate it is, is that it has to do with rules concerning how/when a goalie is allowed to leave the crease area.

This seems like the most likely explanation.

Well its the off season so why not have fun and spilt hairs. Roberto Luongo currently is a captain, first goaldender captain since 1948. But he cannot serve as the official captain during games so on-ice captain duties have been assigned to other players. Willie Mitchell is the "liaison" with the officials and performs any ceremonial aspects such as pre-game faceoffs.

I think for most coaches they just want their goaltender focused on stopping the puck.

For those who like triva the other NHL Goaltenders who have been captains are:

John Ross Roach
George Hainsworth
Roy Worters
Alex Connell
Charlie Gardiner
Bill Durnan
