Re: Riots and Racists and Looting...OH MY!!!

I wonder if a woman posted here and talked about their fear of walking home alone when it's dark, would Gurth and some of the others claim she obviously had to be doing something wrong because it doesn't align with their experiences as a male...?

No one is saying blacks don't actually deal with racism/bigotry/stereotyping.

yes, but isn't he saying that other people are saying that? and now you are saying he shouldn't be saying that other people are saying that?

I'm losing track of all the cross-attributions and rebuttals of same.....

Isn't racism pervasive and institutionalized belief that ALL people of a certain race are inferior? while stereotyping is saying that SOME people who belong to a SUBSET of a certain group have certain traits in common, which might be negative, neutral, or positive?

For anyone to equate the two seems forced to me, but what do I know?

No one is saying that, but every time someone brings up the possibility of racism in a particular case there's always this backlash "Oh he must've done SOMETHING to deserve (racism)" by at least one of the usual suspects on here. I mean obviously blacks as a race had to do SOMETHING wrong to get pulled over in traffic stops far more often than whites

Are you advocating for the prosecution of all the other cops at that scene? Even the one in charge?

Re: Riots and Racists and Looting...OH MY!!!

Or you could answer the question.

Something about the first rule of the internet being that a response along the lines of "answer the question" means you've already lost the debate.

Just ask him about it (the #1 Rule of the Internet)... although he's unlikely to answer... prolonging his win-streak.

Aren't "internet debates" wonderful? If you get a tough question, you just ignore it, change the subject a little bit, erect another strawman, and declare yourself the perpetual "winner." This is why arguments go on until their proponent dies of old age. :)

Where is OP these days...

Re: Riots and Racists and Looting...OH MY!!!

It wasn't directed towards me.

But for the record, if you did ask me that question my answer would be no, of course not, that's an idiotic attempt to change the topic from the original statement which correctly states that there is some degree of culpability for the other cops who stood around, just as if you watch somebody get beat up and do nothing you won't be prosecuted but you are still morally suspect, something which, since you are trying to be evasive, obviously makes you very uncomfortable.

Well ya see the supervisor lady was black so no harm no foul or something.

I'm not advocating anything. Just sharing one former cop's opinion - especially since it differs sharply from the opinion of the former cop who posts here. As with just about anything, there are differing views on a topic even within the same profession.

Re: Riots and Racists and Looting...OH MY!!!

Oops.

OAKLAND, CA- A Wednesday night protest in Berkeley ended after an undercover California Highway Patrol cop pulled a gun on attendees. Earlier in the evening, between 100 and 200 protesters gathered to continue protests that started last week over the lack of indictments in the police murders of Michael Brown and Eric Garner.

The protest started on the University of California Berkeley campus and participants marched to Wheeler Hall, where businessman Peter Thiel was giving a talk–coincidentally on the effectiveness of the nation-wide protests. Protesters were not allowed in the auditorium but eventually forced their way in.

By the time the crowd thinned out to between 30 and 50 people, the protest had made its way to Oakland. It was there that demonstrators discovered two undercover cops, who were dressed as civilians and wearing bandanas over their faces.

Protesters began yelling

“Hey, they’re undercover, they’re cops!”

A protester and Berkeley resident who identified himself only as “Dylan” reported that he pulled a bandana off of an officer’s face:

“I’m a white man, and I pulled off (the officer’s) mask, but they punched a black man…He got arrested.”

Re: Riots and Racists and Looting...OH MY!!!

Oops. Here's the rest...

“The two policemen started to walk away, but the protesters persisted, screaming at the two undercover cops. One of the officers pushed a protester aside. The man responded by pushing back and then the officer tackled him to the ground, handcuffing him.

The crowd, incensed, began to gather around them. The second officer pulled out his gun and pointed it at the crowd. More officers quickly arrived and dispersed the crowd.”

A Reuters photographer captured the officer pointing his gun. Storify reported that the officer also pointed his gun at the camera.

Oakland police reported in a press conference that the undercover officers were California Highway Patrol (CHP).

Police are claiming that an officer was assaulted, which allegedly prompted the arrest and drawing of a gun. After the incident, more officers converged on the scene.

The mostly peaceful protest did see several protesters throwing rocks as businesses, one of which shattered the glass of a T-Mobile store. A Chase bank was also targeted and according to the City of Oakland, looting was reported in a small business area in downtown. Storify posted screen shots of tweets alleging the cops had been banging on store fronts before they were outed.

Nightly demonstrations have turned violent in the San Francisco Bay area, where police tear gassed, pepper sprayed and beat protesters and where other demonstrators shut down freeways.

The CHP is no stranger to police brutality and controversy. An officer recently resigned after beating a woman on the side of the road during a traffic stop. They arrested 150 police brutality protesters who blocked a highwayon Monday night.

Wednesday’s protest was organized by the activist group, By Any Means Necessary, which aims to see “killer cops” jailed and charges against protesters dropped. More details are expected to emerge.

Re: Riots and Racists and Looting...OH MY!!!

As a student of rhetoric, I've sometimes wondered why none of these fringy political affiliates have the courage to try to present their choice of news without the color commentary. In this case it's slipping "police murders" into the place of "police shootings" within the first paragraph, which seems minor, but it's a breach of professionalism that's a dead giveaway and immediately concedes all credibility for a reader like me.
From what I've read, the right-wingers and "natural health" sites are guilty of this editorializing more than left-wingers of which "dailykos" stands as one clear example (probably just because I'm exposed to those sites more often).
I've wondered, if they did present these less widely reported stories straight up, if they would be more or less effective. Perhaps they're just preaching to the choir and don't care what independents think? Is is all about the clickbait? I find it annoying because many of the stories would seem to be worth reporting on but I feel like I can't trust any of it when I come across this kind of thing.

(to clarify: the killers of Brown and Garner were not actually tried for and convicted of murder, contrary to this report)
