Report: Holy Cross to replace Notre Dame in Hockey East?

And we told you why... It's not likely to work... Lowell had all kinds of problems as long as the lock monsters existed.

You are trying to compare situations to each other and a response was given to the idea.

Yes, a response that had absolutely nothing to do with simply sharing an arena. Oh well...

Can't wait to see how the NCHC reacts to this news now that their "super conference" is being directly challenged by Hockey East.
Time to blow up Eastern hockey I guess... Let the shuffling begin.

Maybe I'm missing some sarcasm here, but how does HC make HE any more of a power conference than it already is?

This move, if it happens, impacts at most the ability of fans of existing HE schools to go to away games. Assuming, of course, that Worcester isn't too arduous of a journey for those of you who complain about journeys longer than 20 miles.

Trading one Catholic doormat for another?

Well, in a word... "Yes." The SOP of the NCHC is to react drasticly to things that shouldn't really require any reaction at all.

As a rule, no-one in the Eastern time zone is allowed to complain about conference travel, regardless of who you are playing. Team buses in Hockey East don't even use the heaters because they arrive at the visitor's rink before the bus could even warm up. Most Eastern "road trips" are shorter than the routes Western teams take just to get to their departure airports.

It's a beautiful thing, really.

Can't wait for that Holy Cross - UMass/Amherst rivalry to heat up. :D

The smiley is appropriate. Not sure everyone on St. James Hill could find Amherst on a map. The "natural" rivalry would be BC-HC. Both are Jesuit schools that had a storied football and hoops rivalry in another era.

Much like they were decently competitive teams in football and basketball in another era

"No one in the eastern time zone."

So, you don't think a bus trip from Bentley to RIT or Canisius is a pain in the butt? HEA isn't the only conference in EST, ya know...

Not to mention Princeton or QPac to/from St Lawrence & Clarkson, and vice versa.

All those West of the Eastern time zone who would like to trade their current travel schedule for maximum of 6 hour bus trips once or maybe twice a year raise you hands...
Ok let's count... 1,2,3... ahhh, yep, pretty much everyone.

I'm not saying 6 hours isn't a long way, but teams like MTU, NMU, LSSU take a six bus ride just to get to the airport where they might then board a plane for a six-hour flight, maybe followed by another flight if they're headed for Fairbanks. Talk to someone at UAH about 24 hour bus trips around the US for kicks... Or the fact that UAA and UAF are three or four TIME ZONES from the rest of their conference. I'm not ripping Hockey East in particular, I'm just saying that HE, ECAC and AH really can't complain about tough travel by comparison. Even the Bi6(7) is fairly compact due to their lack of teams.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe these are the closest opponent for each WCHA team.
Look at Tech and Northern with that posh 90 minute bus ride.
Cake eaters...
Ryan J

Team (Closest Opponent) Distance
MTU (NMU) 1.5 hrs
NMU (MTU) 1.5 hrs
LSSU(NMU) 3 hrs
FSU (LSSU) 3.5 hrs
BGSU (FSU) 4 hrs
BSU (MSU) 5 hrs
MSU (BSU) 5 hrs
UAF (UAA) 6 hrs
UAA (UAF) 6 hrs
UAH (BGSU) 9 hrs
ASU (anyone) days

I'll bet some teams in Hockey East might not even log 24 hrs in TOTAL one way travel for their entire conference schedule. It's just a guess, but given the proximity of BC-BU-PC-NU-UM-UML-MC-UC I think it's a pretty safe assumption. The "long" trip is way out to Indiana.

Try Bemidji to Lake State or Ferris. The East has it made in the shade.

idk..... getting to Agganis/Conte/Matthews from downtown Boston on public transport can be a pretty grueling commute :p

I know the BSU-BGSU route is officially 13.5h though it's taken BG up to 20h to make the trip one way.

Curious on the BSU-FSU route. Do they go through Chicagoland and around the lake, through Yooperland and back down, or, god forbid, take the ferry from Milwaukee across the lake to Muskegon?

Re: Report: Holy Cross to replace Notre Dame in Hockey East?

Hands down worst trip in college hockey is Boston to Providence for a Friday game!!!! :)

Re: Report: Holy Cross to replace Notre Dame in Hockey East?

But aren't those long trips scheduled for the convenience of doing homework. Must be a lot of 4.0 athletes out west.

I believe last year they went Yooper. For the WCHA QF @ BG, they overnighted near Chicago going there and non stopped it on the way back.
