Re: Rep Retirement Thread 133: I still hate you all
The most infamous weeder at Tech is General Chemistry. Teaches stuff WAAAAAY over the average student's head. It got so bad that there was a campus tradition of playing "Another One Bites The Dust" all over campus on the day of the first Gen Chem exam. Some of the old profs of that class are still part of Tech lore to this day.
General Physics (hit-or-miss profs, clunky online homework system) and Calculus (some of the most godawful profs at the university, not to mention Mathematica) can get hairy too. I've heard that the Calc teachers openly refer to themselves as the "gatekeepers" of the university.
Once you get past those and develop a work ethic, it's not too bad, except for the need to teach to the FE which results in some weird mandatory courses (Civils taking Thermo?!)
Does a very good job of weeding out those who are either not willing and/or able to put in the time and effort required to get a physical or applied science (aka engineering) degree.
I hated my circuits class. I didn't care, the TAs didn't care, the professor didn't want to be teaching, and everyone knew that no one else really cared about teaching/learning. In that class we were allowed a sheet of notes in the exams, the professor handed out a "review" sheet that was basically the exam without any numbers, and the TAs held a review session where they went over how to solve the problems on the "review" sheet. You then copied the answers onto a single sheet, went into the exam, copied the answer onto the actual exam and then plugged in the numbers, easiest exams I ever had. I can't think of any class where I learned less, that includes the classes that were just repeats (undergrad then grad) of other classes that I have taken.
