Re: Rep Retirement Lodge: What are you looking forward to in the offseason?

Also had time to meet up with Patman for some beers and dinner last night.

I need to get me one of those corporate cards one of these days.

I made a soft commitment to the WCHA tourney... though with Lowell actually doing well and a commitment to KingDobbs for the Frozen Four amongst other possible commitments (DU/CC in October, kickball league cruise in December, Xmas, plausible "reunion" for great-aunt's 95th in Chicago mid-late 2013) we'll see how that plays out.

We also discussed the idea of drugging MNS for his own good. :p

Corporate cards aren't as nice as you'd think.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge: What are you looking forward to in the offseason?

My memory on this isn't so good, but I got my learner's permit and then my license (lived in NYC) at 18 which I think were the minimums. I think that if you took drivers ed in HS, you could get a license at 17, but it wasn't offered at my HS, and anyway I was in college when I turned 17.

It wasn't offered at my school, either; they had actually dropped the class two years prior. I believe you can still go from DJ to D (or MJ to M) at 17 if you take Driver's Ed; otherwise it's 18.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge: What are you looking forward to in the offseason?

We took our driver's ed in the spring in which we turned 15, and our license at 16.

Lawn is mowed. I now own a yard instead of a weedpatch.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge: What are you looking forward to in the offseason?

I was just going to comment that you can get your license at 15 here. And I think I heard 14 in North Dakota, but I'm not sure.

Don't think so....

Per the MN DMV site:

First-time drivers of any age must pass a road test to land a Minnesota drivers license. To get a provisional license, you must be at least 16 years old and have held a valid instruction permit for either:

Six months―Teens 18 and younger

Three months―Applicants 19 and older

Getting a moving violation or alcohol/controlled substance violation will postpone the time it take to get a provisional license.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge: What are you looking forward to in the offseason?

Is he late or is the law different in MA? He turned 16 as I recall and in MN you can take the learner's permit test at 15, license test at 16. Much scarier is goldy jr taking the learner's permit this coming summer.

In other news I had lunch with the CEO of my old firm yesterday (not the one who just laid me off, the one before that). The firm founder died in the interim and it turns out things have gotten worse instead of better as I expected. The CEO not only can't hire me back, he's worried if he'll stick around.
Look out for sure. Passed the test first try. His bud was there for the second try. Got questions like who has the right of way at a 4 way stop sign- an ambulance, a pregnant lady or a mailman*, what is the fine for a 3rd DUI offense? His comment to us was "Well, I didn't look at that DUI stuff past the first offense. If I got a first offence my parents would kill me.".....

First real driving in the cinema parking lot- stick shift. He didn't stall much at all. Actually suprised me by being able to get up the luge run (let him drive in the neighborhood) after almost burning the clutch out just one time.

No driver's ed at my HS. My parents wouldn't let me get a job that lasted after dark. I turned the right age in October and dark was 4PM. Band got out at 3:30. I had to wait until I was 18 and then I could take Driver's Ed.

*mailman is the right answer. He can run over the pregnant lady and cut off the ambulance because he is a federal employee.

Wait... nobody taught me that in orientation! :p

Alaska's driver license test is like that. Question difficulty all over the board. You might get bizarro stuff like "what is the penalty for your third DUI offense if the first offense was over a .15 and the second one wasn't?" I heard all kinds of horror stories about grown intelligent adults failing it.

One of my friends got failed on "you've had 3 drinks and need to get home, what should you do?" They answered "not drive." The correct answer was "wait 1-2 hours and re-evaluate." Never mind that it says in the manual in bright red text on one of the pages THE BEST PLAN IS NOT TO DRIVE IF YOU HAVE BEEN DRINKING.

Of course, then I go in and get questions like "what sign is red and has 8 sides?" and ace it.

When my wife and I moved back to MN we had to take a written test (well, computerized) and it was like that. I squeaked through but it was close because I didn't know all the nuances of the drunk driving rules. I only knew the basic one - don't drink and drive. I figured so long as I followed that one I didn't need to know all the penalties, etc.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge: What are you looking forward to in the offseason?

I missed one when I took my written test that was something to the effect of "a person is crossing the street but not in the crosswalk, what should you do?" I answered something like you are not required to stop. Hey, if they want to jaywalk, they deserve to get hit ;)

84 and sunny in Houston. Chilling out tonight, then assessment in our simulator tomorrow am, one of the first steps in completing my training hopefully soon!

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge: What are you looking forward to in the offseason?

Then why in another part of the site does it say that no one under 15 can be licensed? I know I couldn't get one at 15, but I'm not a farmer.
We get special privileges, but then we also start driving stuff much more complicated and larger than a car when we are young. I started operating equipment when i was 7.

Me either. And I just had another orientation type briefing today. You'd think in that hour and a half (or the 8 hours the first day), it would have been mentioned.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge: What are you looking forward to in the offseason?

16 in MN, my daughter (16 in Feb) recently completed her final behind-the-wheel session and we made an appointment for her to take the test.

In Green Bay now. Its a good thing they gave me a sizable raise recently, or now would be the time I'd start *****ing, as it is, I'm content.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge: What are you looking forward to in the offseason?

Why, exactly do I need to be drugged? :p
For your own good. Trust us. :)

So, the last 3 days I had to work with two guys from the local distributor, both guys from Brooklyn. These guys fit the stereotypical wiseass New Yorker that is seen in movies all the time. They ripped on everything, including random people/businesses/etc., each other, and the rest of us. It was obvious that they just loved constantly giving people ****, something I'm not entirly unfamiliar with. They're the kind of guys that will rip you for something and absolutely love it when you give it right back to them. On our way to the jobsite this morning, my coworker and I were riding with them, and one of them made some wisecrack, and I came back with a response on the spot, they started laughing and said "That big one back there is pretty quick, I think he'd fit in just fine with the guys back home, the little one (my co-worker) though, he's too quiet, they'd eat him alive." I figure that is as close to a compliment as anyone would be able to get from those guys. :p
