Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 93: Midseason Excellence

When Oldest Son was a senior at Madison

Dude......your son became a BADger....I'm so disappointed in you. ;)
Obviously kidding and there's a chance offspring #1 - who wants to study Meteorology - could end up either at UW or UND :o since MN doesn't have the program.

Speaking of scotch, and I'm no authority, but have you tried this one? It's maybe the first scotch I've really enjoyed.

I have not but you're the 2nd or 3rd person who has recommended it highly. Definitely on my list. :)

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 93: Midseason Excellence

Interesting that you would have none of those plans if not for having a wife. :D

Not really interesting at all since before I was married I was involved in many of the same kinds of activities at Christmas time, merely with other people. My wife and I are continuing traditions we had each established before we met and have instituted and continued other traditions since meeting and marrying. :)

For me, the stretch of the year from Thanksgiving to New Year's Day is a festive time. I've always felt a touch of melancholy for those people who don't proactively try to immerse themselves in activities with family, friends and loved one at this time of year.

before we head to an eight o'clock performance of a musical version of Little House on the Prairie [Melissa Gilbert and her son are in the cast].

Enjoy! I heard/read nothing but outstanding reviews while it played in MSP but unfortunately we could not get to a performance.

I just opened a can of tuna that is best used by 9/5/12...

That's good to hear. I spend most of my holidays complaining that I have to be around family. But its not too bad in small doses! :)

GE, We're season ticket holders so that helps. :) We're expecting nothing less than a top shelf performance and are eager to see the production. I never watched Little House on the Prairie during its lenghty TV run. It's surely a sign of how old I'm getting that Melissa Gilbert and her son are part of the cast at the DCPA production.

My wife and I are looking forward to the performance as we saw Spring Awakening two weeks ago and both of us gave it two "thumbs down, way down."

I've said it here before, and I'll share it with you in case you missed it. Oldest wants to be a journalist. Despite my reservations of him becoming a BADger, the whole reciprocity thing, plus it IS an excellent academic school, made it a logical choice for a lot of reasons. The plot thickened when he became a student writer for The Badger Herald. He started covering Women's hockey, then as a Jr. and Sr. he covered Men's hockey. He was the lead writer when they won the NCAA's and I not only had to eat a big piece of humble pie, but lost a bet where a picture was taken of me with a BADger jersey on.
And I still hear about it. :o
In addition, Mrs. Gonzo got her accounting degree from UMD and her Statistics (IT) degree from SCSU.
The other two kids said "I'm out of this WCHA madness". One went to ASU, the other Normandale. :p

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 93: Midseason Excellence

'diva - I think it should be played that way. 99% of the time the floor is disgusting and the ping pong ball is wet (presumably having recently been in someone's beer cup) and picking up all the germs, dust, dirt, bugs, etc that are on the floor and then being tossed into a beer cup that someone drinks from. It's repulsive.

Granted, she and all her friends are going in to various health-related professions, so it makes sense. Plus, she can't drink beer (it's an allergy thing), so I don't doubt the variant was developed so she could play, too.

If we're going to have to play drinking games, I prefer either flip cup or "Beer" (as coined by shrader).

Flip Cup FTW!

What he said. We always had two cups of scalding hot water before the start of every game, and they were changed before the start of the next game.

A friend of mine played with scotch, and then he learned that that was a Very Bad Idea.

This. That water was freaking hot.
'Bando--were you there the year they played "'Soup' Pong"?

is that what you homos were playing while GLM, Brent, and myself were annoying people and making them leave in a huff? :p

People worry about germs too much. I believe that one of the main reasons why I very rarely get sick is because growing up I was exposed to so many of them. I was always outside in the dirt and mud, always around livestock, ate with dirty hands, etc. Now I have a killer immune system, so it seemed to work out fine for me.

I hardly ever played beer pong, because I don't drink beer, I played with shots of whiskey once, that lasted one game.

I played with vodka...I think I hit my head on the table at one point...

I've had tuna. I love tuna. Whatever is put into a can is not tuna. :)

no it's not. Ahi tuna, yellowtail, super white...mmmm! Canned tuna = dumpy.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 93: Midseason Excellence

Agreed.

Tuna is best served raw, over sticky rice, with some soy sauce and wasabe.

Indeed - I will have to convince (not that it'll be hard) my parents that they want sushi sometime while I'm home over the next few weeks.

Nope - quarters (which is also kinda gross), which morphed into, "let's get the girl in the group really drunk".

Indeed, good sir.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 93: Midseason Excellence

Howdy Folks
Went to the Drs yesterday, saw the results of my MRI, pictures were very cool, what I saw in them wasn't. Definite tear in the front of the rotator cuff. Dr said I could live with it, that fixing it wasn't going to get easier or harder with time. Set up March 1st as operation day, generally a slow time for me. The worst part is 6 weeks in a sling, which means 6 weeks sleeping in a lazy boy:( , then 4 weeks of light duty and physical therapy.Expensive screw up on my part.
ohhh yeah, sounds like Subscapularis, the muscle right under the shoulder blade. :o

Les, sorry to hear about the MIL. :(

I believe I've answered that question once.

Morning Lodge. My team won trivia last night, and they actually had Guinness at the "Irish" pub. Ate way too much, mostly 'cause the bf made dinner before hand. Pork medallions with a cherry glaze. Except, they weren't really medallions. I had to teach the boy a few cooking terms. At least he's willing to learn (and to cook).
Mmm.... had something like that Friday night, only I think it was a peach glaze. either way, it was **** tasty.

So, my sister tells me that at a certain downstate MI university that doesn't have hockey and should move up to D-1, they play beer pong using cups of water and a side beer. When the cup is made, you just move it aside and drink from your side beer. Makes sense on the germ-prevention end, but just seems bizarre to me.
I knew the quality of GVSU students would go down after I graduated!! :(

I never played it that way there, but then again, that was well before the whole Swine Flu scare and whatnot. I could see how it would make sense in the preventing spread of something like that.

I've seen it played with animal crackers instead of ping-pong balls. Saves you from having to find the ball, and introduces a new sort of challenge (they also tend to hook the rims of the cups a bit better, so you don't get as many bounce-outs.) And animal crackers soaked in beer... they're not half bad. :o
That does sound good....

that's why you don't play drinking games in bars. :p

sushi is an amazing food. And not the crap that a lot of people think is sushi. California rolls are NOT sushi. I'm talking sashimi. Mmm octopus. :)

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 93: Midseason Excellence

gmaan - allow me to add my "way cool!" to the little g news!

I just whacked my hand against the metal molding on one of the walls in our cafeteria. One of my knuckles has a nice red welt on it. I'm so clumsy sometimes.

:p I had a good time, I'm not complaining (merely stating what the game morphed into). In fact, I had quite a good time in general that weekend.

Agreed on the sushi part. If Haunted ever graces us with his presence again, you should ask him about the night we ate live sea urchin sashimi. (might have been live scallop, but I think it was sea urchin.) I prefer yellowfin sashimi or unagi (eel). I'd really like to try a version Otoro (fat of the tuna belly) where they lay out the rice, lay out the belly, use a blowtorch to carmelize the fat, then roll and bind with nori. Apparently it's supposed to be very sweet.

edit - and, of course, fugu (pufferfish) is on the list - have to be careful with the preparation though :p
