Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 92: Let's Keep SiouxTechie Out

Dillon is one place you can live during the ski season [and other times of the year] without having to pay and arm and a leg to do so. I'm not saying it's inexpensive there, but the general rule is, during ski season the closer you live to the mountain the more expensive it is to do so.

A-Basin is fun. Lots of "steeps and deeps." I've long thought of it as a better area for experts than beginners or intermediates, although those skiers certainly can enjoy the area as well. My wife and I have season passes to the areas owned by Vail Associates. Our passes allow us to ski A-Basin on an unlimited basis with no blackout days. Because our condo is in the heart of Breck 1 1/2 blocks from where we catch a shuttle to the slopes every day, we generally ski there and/or drive the pass to get our ten days at Vail/Beaver Creek which our passes afford us. The geography of our ski season is such that we don't ski A-Basin nearly as much as we ski Breck and Vail.

Our passes are blacked out for Vail/BC on several holiday weekends during the ski season. It's fine with us since we wouldn't choose to ski V/BC on those days because we know the slopes would be jammed. One of the benefits of having a season pass is that if the slopes are unexpectedly crowded my wife and I simply get in a few runs, then head back to the condo and a nice afternoon strolling downtown Breck. Since we're able to tailor our work schedules we frequently head to Breck for three day wekends during ski season and ski Mondays when the slopes are, relatively speaking, empty. We're most fortunate in that regard. :)

Nice gig! You have some outstanding choices! I would avoid Vail on busy days too, if I was a local. Midvail (IIRC) could be really dangerous. I loved Breck when I was there many, many, moons ago and hope to head back someday. Great mix of runs and the city itself is great too.

They love it out there and *may* have purchased something recently. He actually moved there as a firefighter, one of his buddies told him he should try to patrol during the winter/off season and he ends up getting the gig at a-basin. In the past they have returned to Duluth during the summer & live on his sailboat - not sure if that will continue.

There are several heli-skiing operations in Colorado. I've never been, but it is most certainly on my wish list of skiing activities. I have a nephew who's been heli-skiing in Utah and Alberta and he raves about the experience.

Yes, heli-skiing is quite expensive, but for avid skiers the experience is unsurpassed.

For a variety of reasons I've skied with several Vail ski instructors/guides over the years and have been advised of some of the outfits I should try if I ever decide to heli-ski. From all the first-hand stories and accounts I've heard it's a "must-do" activity for an avid skier. :)

Winter Park/Mary Jane is a terrific ski area. The backside of MJ has terrific bumps. Honset-to-goodness double black runs, not just marked as such. Great challenges back there.

Please upload the link to Youtube when you decide to jump out of the helicopter. I am trying to imagine Mr. Shot jumping out of a heli onto the bunny hill wearing his high tech ski gear. :D

(think SNL's water ballet skit ;) )

GE, In a sense mid-Vail can be dangerous because it is the onloading site for two lifts: Mountain Top Express and Wildwood Express. Additionally, there is a sizable restaurant at which to eat at mid-Vail so there are people congregating in the area for that reason as well.

Both the MTE and Wildwood lifts provide access to the Back Bowls and for that reason as well the area surrounding the entrance to those lifts tend to be heavily populated, especially in mid-morning when late arrivers are just getting up the mountain and heading to the bowls or Blue Sky Basin.

[Since you last skied Breck] lots of terrain has been developed with more expansion planned. Peaks 7-8-9 &10 now exist and plans for Peak 6 are well under way. I completely agree with you about the town of Breck itself: can't be beat. As much as my wife and I enjoy skiing Vail and going to some of the restaurants there, Breckenridge "fits" us better. I will add that when the powder is fresh and deep there is nothing which compares to skiing the Back Bowls at Vail, period.

gmann, There are two kinds of heli-skiing. One variety is the activity in which you do jump from the helicopter, just above the terrain, into vast expanses of snow and away you go! The other is the activity is one in which a helicopter flies you to an area on a mountain, lands and then the passengers disembark before heading off into untracked glades. The helicopter then flies to the bottom of the face of the mountain which you are skiing, lands, loads the passengers and then takes off in search of another expanse of untracked powder.

The second type of heli-skiing is the one I'm eager to try. My nephew has done both and is someone expert enough in skiing to be classified as an extreme skier.

But onto the bunny hill? :p

All this snowboard talk from us. We better have some mad skills come UAA weekend haha

Agreed. :) That better be one badâss weekend. Seeing as how it's right after the first week of classes, I'm assuming little to no homework. :)

Just returned from visiting the World Trade Center site. Interesting but probably wasn't worth the time.

So you're saying within a few days the first numbskull of the winter will drive his sled through this and into the lake.
I wonder if we'll get a snowplow driven into the lake this year as well...

I should be fine wearing a pair of jeans for ice skating, yes?
Yes, you should be...

I have not been skiing for over 10 years...it was fun.

Hi Lodge.

What did I miss? (or don't I want to know?)

I think they were talking about skiing, and if some Minnesotan is going to die by going through ice in some kind of vehicle, and a little discussion of weather and travel for the weekend.

If you feel so inclined please feel free to add my friend in your prayers. He informed me earlier today that he has Diffuse Large B Cell Lymphoma (non Hodgkin’s lymphoma). It is a high grade aggressive stage 4 cancer.

:(
