He thought is said scotch ale, but it said scorch ale and was an IPA. Had it on a shelf for a couple years. Whoops. :D

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 200 - End of Season

Evening, Lodge. Was ZOMG surprised by a an out of town friend showing up at the corner store, because she knew I would be there at that particular time. Blew my mind, jaw dropped. It was all the awesome. Plus, the owner of the corner store did a favor and filled a growler of beer that normally would not be filled (chocolate orange stout, from a firkin). I jokingly mentioned I'd like one, he said sure. NO clue that he was serious about it. He was. :D They don't fill growlers on demand to begin with. :D

Plus, beautiful afternoon. The clouds cleared, and now a nice sunny evening.

I just sorted thru my last two sets. I'm exactly 80% done with my baseball card project, at least this phase. Now to hit card shops and shows, plus maybe the National in Chicago.

Kinda funny, and I'm assuming this is the case....those random common/nobody cards are the ones giving you trouble. Why? Well, who saves those???

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 200 - End of Season

There's some of that, yes, but there's some big ones out there that I'm missing. The really big stuff, I got, but there's a few Reggie Jacksons, Tom Seavers, Pete Roses and Johnny Bench stuff I'm missing. 1975 and 1976 might take a while. All the high end rookie cards, I think I've got.

Speaking of rookie cards, I almost put a bid on a Mickey Mantle rookie this week, but I couldn't verify that the card was an original. If I knew that it was, well, that would have gotten interesting.

As in the $50K Mantle? Or am I misunderstanding?

You're not misunderstanding. Something didn't smell right, so it was an easy pass. Last time I checked, the bidding was in the mid $2K range, but I didn't follow it any further.

Whoa whoa whoa. 2K? Holy crap, I am way out of the game at this point. That's a massive drop.

Either it was a reprint, or someone had no idea what they had. Either way, I didn't have a good feeling, so I didn't touch it. There's a '52 Bowman out there right now for $80. It looks real, with rounded corners and all, and it doesn't look like a reprint, but I'm not touching that one, either. If I knew it was real, it would be a slam-dunk. But I'm not paying that to take a chance.

$80 is way too low, don't care how bad a card is, as for condition. I mean, that would have to be soaked in a puddle for days, zero corners, and 95/5 centering, maybe. I would also guess that "not knowing what they had" in this day and age is extremely rare.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 200 - End of Season

Especially when I read that they reprinted that set in the mid-90's. I smell about 10,000 rats.

On another note, I found a dealer whose ads I used to read about 30+ years ago. He's still open, and now he says he has north of 65 mil cards.
