Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #188: Hockey Is The Real Politics

Good Morning, Lodge!

Survived Christmas at the in-laws. I am really confused by my BIL's relationship. They drove to St. Cloud separately. They are both from the area. The BIL's fiance drove to her parent's place after our family dinner and my BIL stayed back. Obviously, no one likes to sacrifice a thing or two in that relationship.

Maybe the BIL is really her side piece that she's not ready to show off to the family. ;)

Good morning Lodge. Home today, headed back to my folks' tonight. Tomorrow I'm spending the day with my mom and nieces so my mom can teach us how to make the New Year's bread my mom's been making forever. I've been sitting on my couch all morning watching MTV Classic as they've been playing George Michael videos since yesterday. I need to dig out my carton of CDs so I can play in the car.

My bro and his (long term) fiancee missed his inlaws' Christmas last year, because they were not fond of him having a new relationship. They've since warmed up, but it could be one of those things. Maybe fam disapproves in some way.

After last Thu-Fri, due to extreme slow business, it's gonna be odd tomorrow going back to work. I expect mega-business. Year-end, quarter-end, etc. Thankfully, I work 4 day weeks until Feb. :) Yay massive PTO.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #188: Hockey Is The Real Politics

Greetings & salutations!

Hope everyone had - and continues to have - a wonderful holiday.

So Ireland was awesome!
- Took a couple days to get used to driving on the left and wasn't too bad after that. Returned the car with mirrors still attached on both sides....so I had that going for me. :)
- Was great to see my daughter again, she's been in country since Aug, and she gets home later this week - on the 29th.
- Guinness is fantastic there and I liked the Murphy's even more, especially in/around the Cork area.
- Scenery was amazing - Lot's of rocks & walls :)
- As amazing as the Cliffs of Moher are the cliffs on the west side of Inismore (Aran Islands) are even more dramatic
- Drove through Cong, where The Quiet Man was filmed and my car automatically stopped in front of Pat Cohen's pub. Car has more sense than meself. ;)
- Toured Mecca....er.....Bushmills. It is my favorite whiskey and loved being there.
- Derry is a very cool city, hope to get back there again as well as spend more time in County Donegal
- Next time we need to go at a different time of year - not much daylight in December but it's how our timing worked out with my daughter. The sun rose after 8:30 and set before 4 in the north....

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #188: Hockey Is The Real Politics

Hi there Lodge peeps. Here at my folks' place with my nieces. We're making New Years bread. Dough is currently rising for the first time. Also made brownies, which my mother makes from a box but my nieces think she has some special secret. Heh. Then, my mom is going to teach them how to make tiropita (cheese pie).

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #188: Hockey Is The Real Politics

Having to work today, forgot my lunch so I went out to go through the skyway to find something interesting to eat. Even though most of the restaurants are open, it's so dead that it looks like 2016 is trying to kill downtown Minneapolis.

It's amazing how much better he house looks after a thorough deep clean. just finishing up the upper floor. The rest of the week is dedicated to the basement and taking care of the small projects I've put off this year.

The 21st century has been trying to kill downtown for nearly two decades. No one goes downtown to shop anymore so retail is dying. You only go downtown to eat anymore, but since it's so viciously competitive, it's hard to stay afloat.

For that matter, downtown had probably been dying for about 30-40 years. It's only hope is to make living down there more attractive. Millenials seem to like living downtown for some unexplainable reason.

Minneapolis is building so much living space downtown and near the Vikings stadium that it's become ridiculous. The city has a goal of doubling downtown residents, and they're providing tax incentives to construction companies to build these mostly apartments and a few condos which then go unused at something like a 50% occupancy rate right now. And they're still building units. Most of these units start around $2300/mo for less than 1000 sq ft. Those are insane prices for this area when $800/mo will get you near the same space in the neighborhood just south of I-94, less than a 10-minute walk from here.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #188: Hockey Is The Real Politics

Yeah, pricing is out of hand. I pay something like $1,400 for a 15-year mortgage on a 2,200-square-foot home with five beds.

Market forces will remind the developers this isn't Seattle.

should provide tax incentives to renters then too!! maybe $2,300/mo tax credits :)

I think that both of them are headstrong and high maintenance. There is no ground that they reason on.

Good Evening, Lodge!

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #188: Hockey Is The Real Politics

Work was dead today after an initial rush. I have no clue what to expect for the rest of the week.

As for rent, I have about an 825 sq ft apt, vaulted ceilings, W/D in unit, and a real fireplace (don't use it, maintenance is a beech on those things) and I am paying just shy of $1000/mo. 10 years ago it was $825, and the policy that has been in place since I moved in is: live here 10 years, rent is frozen at that 10 year price. I am about 15 minutes from downtown MPLS, nice neighborhood, a rich city (although you go a mile in just about any direction, you're in a different suburb), and I love it. $2300/month....do people think what kind of house they can get with that in the 'burbs?! Jesus.
