Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #185: Summer Activities

Just woke up from a rage dream. Holy christ. Haven't had one in a long time.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #185: Summer Activities

Mornin' Lodge.

Busy day today. Getting some playtime with RV2, then off to lunch with a buddy at church (free money promo, could get up to $1976 if I'm lucky) then off to a local brewery's anniversary party.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #185: Summer Activities

Good Morning Lodge.

Jr survived and is back. He had more fun than he expected. They held it at a place that has trampoline area, turf field, gyms, etc. He played soccer on the turf, they had video games and he crushed the record on Big Buck Hunter, played casino games, had a magician perform. They had a girl break a leg and another her nose on the trampolines.

At the ceremony they did have all 14 valedictorians speak, but they were brief so not too bad. Glad it was a cool day, gym still got too warm.
14?
Went last night and took pics for the kids I take Track/XC pics for. One of the kids was Salutatorian. Gave one of the best speeches I've ever heard at a grad. Great message, funny delivery, kids listening were engaged- I have pics of the kids during the speech. not one kid was looking away from him. Impressive.

Aw, wish I knew you were going to be there. Turned out to be a nice night for it. And agreed, I thought his speech was great. As was the class president's. And the superintendent calling out the students who tweeted him was very funny.

goldy - how does one class have 14 valedictorians?

Long time no post.

I hope all is well with each of you.

IIRC, my school had 4-5. If there was more than one person that was above a certain GPA level, so be it. I don't recall more than one speech, though (the top valedictorian).

As to how they have 14 valedictorians, they didn't use AP as tie breaker. They had 14 kids with 7 semesters of 4.0. I'm sure they could have whittled it down by weighting for AP classes, but chose not to. There were 2 Salutatorians who were mumbling "dam that one B!".

The ACT and SAT scores prove it's not grade inflation either. It's a college prep school and it shows in their scores and college placements. There were 211 kids in the class. I pulled out my yearbook and found there were 794 in my class.

ETA. BSM had 108 in National Honor Society out of the 211. Jr was NOT one of them.

Good Morning, Lodge!

My graduation class was 406. We held the record for the most dropouts, most drunks, most drug users, and most arrests. Our original class as Freshmen was over 900.

Found out more information about getting a home loan. We cannot move forward with one until January the earliest. It turns out those 3 years I worked in customer service took away the 6 years previous of printing and design. I have to be back in my field for at least 2 years before proceeding. That will give us some time to save even more.

Are you sure you're not from Chicago? I know Wisconsin can be a rough and tumble place, but DAYUMN!

School based after parties? Blackjack for raffle tickets? Chaperones? LAME! :D

My HS graduating class was around 400. Graduation took place at our, rather large, gym. Nothing like cramming 2000 people into a gym at the end of May. Got a little hot. 3 things I remember: 1. I sat between two girls I had never seen before. 2. The look of exasperation on administrators faces when the beach balls came out (as was tradition). 3. My frustration when the band director forgot to play the little fanfare note every band kid got for me. 4 years of half-a*ed effort wasted.

Afterwards we retired to a kids family cabin far enough north where the Alaska State Troopers response time was questionable and raged. Think like end of American Pie just less Hollywoody. I was rather popular due to the 24 pack I was carrying in a backpack. And the bottle of Captain Mo. My brothers were rather generous with graduation gifts.

One of the reasons they stopped ranking classes before even I went through. Some students weren't getting into colleges they were more than qualified for because they weren't in the top whatever percent of their class.

Our overnight party was at the U's Student Union (I think)...

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #185: Summer Activities

The block party was a blast, despite some sunshowers. I was smart enough to grab a table inside before soh and a couple other hockey folk showed up. Got my limited beers (along with a couple for bbdl), and had a very nice Sipper Saturday, to top off a great visit with RV2. Who apparently loves trucks. Loves them. All of them. That's all he played with. :)

You do realize that you need to bring him a dump truck, right?

That was the SMALLEST truck he asked about in the book. There were front-loaders, backhoes, etc. Kinda got a little teary-eyed, thinking he's going into my line of work (kinda) when he gets older. :D

But yes, that is on the agenda for a Christmas present.

Decided last minute when one of the kids texted me to ask if I was going to be there. She wanted to take a pic with me. I had mr les drop me off because parking is a 5hit show. I posted a ton of pics on my Trackie FB page. I think I saw your niece tagged in a few but I could be wrong.

I can't remember what we did afterwards. Most people had family parties they were supposed to be at and met up afterwards. My parents were newly divorced. It was very awkward. They were not on speaking terms yet. Both wanted me at their house, both had invited their side of the family to their house. Both families were uncomfortable with the situation. I think I went out with friends just to escape that madness but there weren't any massive parties I remember.

Colleges run the biggest marketing racket job around. I wonder if there was a way to do a study where they blind your alma mater and compare outcomes. I went to a state U that cost a miniscule fraction of the prestigious colleges. Not one of my patients ever asked where I went before deciding whether I could care for them. For that matter none of them cared about my GPA either not that I know what it was. I can't remember the grad one at all and I vaguely think I know undergrad. For basic fields I sometimes think the bigger U actually have less quality, more impersonal teaching than the cheaper Unis. Most of the leaders in my field that I know didn't go to the expensive places.

...the point of that ramble- the big name U market well but other than bragging rights do they objectively provide any more than the less expensive ones? People buy into the bragging rights/elitism but in my field nothing the 'elite' schools put out is appreciably different than the less expensive ones. Well, except kids being more desperately in debt and an expectation they should be able to do better than they do in a job search. Not so much.

Don't get one that makes noise. If you do the parents quickly get aggravated and it gets 'lost'.

Good Morning Lodge!

Went to a wedding yesterday. The priest sounded like an announcer on a really bad carnival video. Both families traveled from dif states to here. It was an hour away from us. Reception was 3 hours after the wedding with no planned activity between. Kind of bizarre. I guess it was OK for the fams as they went back to hotel and there was a shuttle to the reception. We ended up hanging with some of the peeps from mr les work (good folks!) but I was ready for a nap by the time the reception happened.

Looking back, if I had to do it all over again, I would do my freshman year at Oakland U or OCC and then consider transferring. It would've allowed me to have a transition year where I still lived at home, thus saving my parents money on room & board, and perhaps I wouldn't have burned out on my computer science major like I did. But, it's all water under the bridge at this point.
