Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #185: Summer Activities

? I don't understand this. At this point it seems all discourse should stop the minute anyone uses the label liberal or conservative. IMHO people have hijacked these terms, redefined them in inflammatory and derogatory ways that have nothing to do with the mainstream liberal or conservative's views. Ask a liberal or a conservative to define the opposite term and Saaaatan comes out. Ask them to define themselves and it has nothing to do with what the other side says. Look at the extremes of either side and you have unrealistic, inflexible people who have idealistic views and not a workable plan among them
I will try to explain this one, and one other one, with being as non-controversial as I can, and then I'll be done, because this isn't the thread for it.

What I am trying to say, which I didn't express clearly before is this. There are impressions that people have of both major political parties, many correct, many incorrect. One of those impressions that people have is that the democratic party (the more liberal of the 2) gives hand outs to people that are undeserving. Now I know that many people will disagree vehemently with this assertion, but you cannot argue that there are many people in this country that think this. From my experience working around many people that are hard workers, a portion of these people resent this, they resent the fact that they work very hard to make a living, and pay taxes, which go to people that do nothing, and in their eyes are undeserving. They respect hard work, and don't respect hand outs. Out of the 2 parties, the democrats are the ones that are much more in favor of these types of programs, which puts them at odds with the people I am talking about.

Like I said, this doesn't apply to everyone, but there are quite a few people I have met, been around and known, mostly from rural middle America, that have this point of view.

I hope I explained this better, without ****ing anyone else.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #185: Summer Activities

Good Morning Lodge!

Worked as an RN 2 yrs, one place. Blew out my back. Worked as NP for first practice 14.5 yrs. Left when they decided to tell me to work Saturdays, no extra pay (salaried) or comp time but more importantly I had in writing what my hours were supposed to be and was told "If people don't like it they can leave." I did. I think my boss at the time just about had a heart attack. He thought I wouldn't leave no matter how he treated me. Second job 12.5 yrs. the part of my job I like is seeing families. If I moved a lot I wouldn't be able to do that.

Teaching, very PT, starting next week. No brainer job. Just up my alley at the moment. Not the most organized, very slapdash. If I wasn't a stronger person I would be sucked into all sorts of things I didn't want to do. Fortunately I know I am doing them a favor, not the other way around. Agreed to do Mon and Tues for next week and the week after. Had to email to get the particulars like- I need a key if I am going to be opening up. Talked to her last night, hours after she texted to say she was going to call me 'shortly'. She starts conversation with assuming I would consider also doing Fridays. Nope. I was very clear in my email what I would do. Hasn't changed. Not my problem you started a class without having coverage for Fridays.

For those of us not hip on the medical acronyms, PT means what?

Car Talk on NPR- MIT grads, opened a garage and had a hilarious call in talk show that is now in re-runs.

One of the biggest things is a lack of respect for work ethic or down in the trenches smarts/problem solving. We respect people who brag about screwing the system as long as they are wealthy but we do not respect the people who make the world go round. The most bizarre thing is the people who are blue collar who respect the scumbags and want to be like them.

Who says those people are respected?

What a terrible premise.

Do you watch network news? I can tell you that in my town/surrounding area there are numerous people who do. You have no idea how hard it is to keep your mouth shut when seeing someone on a professional basis and they start expounding on how wonderful these people are. I wanted to shake them and ask them if they had thought what it actually meant other than the ability to get away with something. I think it is the inner adolescent in people. They have had to grow up and act like an adult but secretly wish they could do all these things, say all these things. Somehow they forget there is a reason you shouldn't do them.

Looks like my job description is changing, after re-orgs. I'm currently supporting 1 large, and several small customers, shortly I'll be supporting the entire US distribution network for a certain market (the same market my current product plays in). So, I'll continue supporting the same product I currently do, plus other products, for the entire country. Gonna be alot of work, and more travel.

I don't have cable

No, I have the privilege of not getting laid off.

So one of the Valedictorians from BSM is going to Tech. In addition to being uber smht she is going on a cross country ski scholarship (she was captain of the BSM team) and she is a jr olympian on the national biathlon team and shoots on the BSM trap team.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #185: Summer Activities

Not medical either, but in context I bet it's Part Time.

Well, if this place is going to start requiring reading comprehension and contextual understanding, then I'm out.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #185: Summer Activities

I'm late to the conversation, but want to comment.
The idea of a transition year or two at a community college (or hell, a full-fledged gap year) needs to take hold in America.
I think every individual needs to figure out what is right for them. While my grades weren't great my first year of college (since I had no idea how to study), transitioning at community college wouldn't have helped me. I took an Econ class at CC one summer and it was as easy (maybe easier) than my high school classes. Nothing about community college would have prepared me for UofM.
For me, going straight to a 4 year college was the right move.

Problem 2- the parents have bought into the idea their kid has to a) go to college, whether that is a good choice for them or not b)they fall hook, line, and sinker for the crap of prestige schools, touring many colleges, spending oodles on applications and spout crap about reach schools etc without ever considering what the point of the thing is.
I only applied to 3 colleges. I knew I wanted to go to UofM. Maryland was my back up, and Virginia Tech interested me. I considered applying to Penn State, but decided to keep the application money, 'cause I knew Michigan is where I really wanted to be. I consider Michigan's Engineering program a prestige school (others here can argue what they want). Once you have industry experience, where you went to school doesn't matter as much, but I do believe my UofM diploma helped secure those first few jobs, and even still, it looks nice on the resume.

I was spoiled enough that mommy and daddy paid the tab. When my brother started college my mom, who had worked part time as a substitute teacher, got a full time job and her entire salary paid for college. 8 straight years of out of state tuition between my brother and I. I recognize that I'm fortunate, and I think if I were footing my own bill, I probably would have gone to Maryland and saved some money (I'm cheap as hel). But, had I gone to Maryland my life would be entirely different. I'd have a different engineering degree (Maryland doesn't have my major). I would probably have a completely different career due to the different degree. I wouldn't be a hockey fan. I wouldn't know all you wonderful people. I'd have different friends. I might still live in my hick hometown, or worse, DC suburbs.

The numbers are out there to see, but you make more money jumping around from company to company doing the same thing. That said, I've got 12 years in at my company now.
In the past decade the only raises I've received were by finding a new job. That, and it's difficult to be loyal to a company when few seem to be loyal to their employees.

This X1,000.

Some of my moves garnered me raises, but once I got laid off I had to go backwards then start moving up again. Still not back to my peak salary.

Understandable. I took Calc 1 at community college my senior year of HS. Enlightening, and prepared me well. My issue was I burned out on my original major (CS,) slacked off, and landed on ac pro.

Where community college can REALLY help is with the entry-level critical path courses, especially ones that are built on later and especially if they're known as weeders at your main choice. Knock Chemistry, Physics, Calc, etc. out of the way at community college where you can relax and develop a strong understanding of the material, rather than run yourself ragged for a C as the upperclassmen blast "Another One Bites The Dust" all over campus during the first exam. If there's a course you're really struggling with, you can knock it out over a summer at home as well (I did this with Calc 3.)

When I was at my first job out of school, I look back and think of myself as being extremely loyal to that company. Then they did a layoff, with two people giving contradictory reasons as to why they made their decisions, and that sort of snapped me back to reality. Now my loyalty to the employer goes only so far as what's required for my paycheck. I've had pay raises here that exceed annual COLA only by switching positions within the company. Otherwise there are people here who I know have an effective wage lower than when they started. Odd thing is, even though I'm working for a bank, I don't think many of these people understand that little bit of match, comparing annual pay raises against inflation, so employee retention in Trust Ops is stupidly high for people who aren't advancing in job titles.
