.... I called AAA, I have a Gold membership. Naturally, they won't come to help. Isn't that what Roadside Assistance is for????? Why do I pay them all that money every year????

why didn't they wish to come see you?

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #184: The 2016 Frozen Four

From prior thread:

Sorta. He has driven a stick but not often. I got rid of my last manual vehicle years ago. I got tired of dealing with it in traffic, it sucks in stop-and-go. So I'm lazy in my old age. We did get a friend who has a manual pick-up to take him out and learn the basics. And the race car experience I bought for him last summer was in a stick, although they just started in 2nd and went to third on the track where he stayed for the whole time.
Lil drove a Lambo and they had the paddle shifter. A few laps and he was hooked. He will not drive my lowly Subaru shift

We have the paddles on two of our Subarus, but never use them. Jr wants to drive a stick, but I just don't own one anymore. He wants me to sell the Impreza I bought for him and get something with a manual, but I have no interest in selling or buying any cars that I don't have to.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #184: The 2016 Frozen Four

Driving a stick is numero uno on my "life skills I need to learn yesterday" list. I know how one works, just never actually sat down and driven one and I have reservations about destroying some poor schmuck's clutch while trying.

I asked my father to teach me shortly after I got my license. You'd figure a guy whose life dream was to work in a car plant and owned a '72 Pontiac Grand Prix back in the day would be THRILLED his son is asking him about this.

He just kinda nonchalantly replied "Why would you need to do that? Everything's automatic now."

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #184: The 2016 Frozen Four

Learned on a 66' Chevy, 3 on the column. Best. car. evah!

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #184: The 2016 Frozen Four

Never learned, never had to.

Bro learned on my aunt/uncle's horse boarding ranch, on an old International truck. And none of the gauges worked, so he had to shift on sound/feel only.

It's called "three on the tree," c'mon!

I learned my manual skills driving an '84 Datsun Sentra when I was 16, and had a manual until two years and twenty-two days ago.

We had a '65 Chev belair and a '66 Dodge Dart, both 3 on the tree. I learned on the 2 of them. Took the drivers test in my sister's '67 mustang cause it was auto and one less thing to worry about in the test. Really didn't master the clutch until I drove a motorcycle. Somehow coordinating two hands was easier than two feet. Once I rode for a while the cars came much easier.

The combo of learning to drive and learning to use a manual is a lot for a young kid. If a kid could learn on a tractor first where they don't have other cars, then go to traffic, it'd be easier.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #184: The 2016 Frozen Four

I learned to drive via "3 on the tree". My first three vehicles were stick.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #184: The 2016 Frozen Four

Learned to drive a stick on a '77 Ford Pickup.
In Duluth.
That was curious.

The boss and I just competed our second-to-last FAFSA today. The Lass will be a junior next year which means there is only one more to go....thank God. :)

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #184: The 2016 Frozen Four

I learned on a 1985 F-250 when I was 15. I wasn't supposed to, because this truck was my 17 year old friend's. That thing was incredibly unforgiving, so it was awesome to learn on. I can pretty much jump into anything without grinding the crap out of it because of that.

Kind of how I feel. At most it may take a couple starts to get the feel of a toucher clutch.

buddy of mine at bu had a rx-7. one day he threw me the keys and told me to go get him something. so i learned on the fly in town. comm ave and starrow. drove it to the airport and back. when you get tossed in the pool you learn how to float quickly :D

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #184: The 2016 Frozen Four

I had to borrow a co-worker's minivan to get to an appointment over lunch one time - from the Fairgrounds to North Clinic/North Memorial. I knew the theory of driving a stick. I only stalled it out a couple of times. It wasn't until after I got back that she told me first gear didn't work.

I haven't driven a "flappy paddle" shifter (quote Top Gear). I love my stick shift though.

Seriously? You own an automatic Jeep?

And you, too?

Crappy drive home this morning thanks to the freak snow storm this morning. All clear by this afternoon, in time for me to wake up early and head to the MIL birthday party (party was at 2pm, which was not possible for me to go to, but I was good and went at 4pm and they were just eating, so I didn't feel too bad). Back at work tonight, but counting down the hours until we leave for FLA. The last two night have been fun as I'm friends with the weekend crew (our weekends are Friday night and Saturday night). I'm not as friendly with tonight and tomorrow night's crew, so I'm less excited. We had a birthday party for one of the elderstatesmen nurses on Friday night and we had a cheese party last night (which I am paying for today :o :o ).

Yep. When I bought my Jeep, I said I want the following (along with a certain price range):

1. Automatic
2. Full doors
3. Soft top
4. Round headlights

That was it. :)

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #184: The 2016 Frozen Four

My mom had her mid-life crisis and got a manual scion tC about 7 years ago. I spent about 30-45 minutes in an empty parking lot, then off to the streets. May hardly ever need the skill, but it's something I'm glad I'd be comfortable doing, should the need ever arise.

Best friend's mom growing up insisted that she and I learn how to drive manual. When we were 14, she took Kara and I out to the field and let us loose until we could shift reasonably well. Was quite the surprise when my parents took me out at 16 to teach me to drive and I could do the shifting part with ease  (first car was a beat up Toyota 4-Runner stick).
