Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #180: Holiday Onslaught

Trying to look busy when you don't have work is hard. Knowing that they can't keep paying you to sit around and you'll be out on your *** soon is not easy either. I'd rather have a steady work load and some sense of security.

I can buy that.

We hit 60F a couple times last week, and then this week we have three days in the 50s with rain, and then we're in the 30s with snow. WTH? Thanks for the transition period, Mother Nature.

I like Facebook because it's an easy way to find out which of my friends are idiots.

Agreed.

Evening, Lodge. What was supposed to be a 4 hour shift is now a 12. On the plus side, I have the same patients that I had last week. One had a hiccup - I had told her last week her plan was for discharge from our unit since she did so well overnight - the next day she was reintubated. We're in the same place we were last week, but I'm hesitant to be so optimistic. The other is the patient who has been here 40+ days. He is making solid improvements, but the notes indicate the family is unhappy for some reason - I will have to investigate when they make their daily 0530 call.

Quiet weekend for us - was supposed to go to Boston, but apparently it is too much work to make plans up to a month out when you have a 1 year old. Even if plans include us coming down and meeting them at a place of their choosing. I actually like their kid and was looking forward to catching up with mom and dad. She emailed me yesterday wanting to know if I could make it down between the 24th of December and the 2nd of January since that's when her office is closed. I didn't respond. This person has been one of my closest friends since 2003 and this last year has been very upsetting and frustrating.

Families change things. My FFL league, as they got older and started families....I see them maybe 1-2 times a year, and that's FFL Draft Time. Part my fault, part theirs. Easier for me to adjust my schedule, but I don't always "reach out" either.

I guess that's one of the frustrating things. I reach out often, I like staying in touch and I've heard having kids makes it tough, but we're pretty flexible. Formerly, she'd write a response to an email at work, especially when things were busy with the baby. Now...nada. I thought she was busy, but she posts news stuff on FB all day, so I know she's reading the news all day. And I've been tagged in photos of them using the birthday gift we gave the little one, so I don't think she's mad...

Now you know my frustration with the Ex. ;)

Seriously, though...it's weird, but I get it. You are in a relationship, so no third wheel there, but once friends couple up? Whole new world to deal with.

I was the last of my crew of 10+ friends to have kids. I felt very much the way you do. Was willing to be flexible, travel, loved the kids. It wasn't enough and I felt as you describe. (Before FB people just fell off the map). Then I had lil and I got it a bit more. Parenting kids when they are little is a very self absorbed job. I know some people who this doesn't seem to be true for but for me it was all I could do to hang on. Having a kid is very intense and in the moment. You might post a pic, make a comment because at teh moment you are doing it you have time and it works. You might have other times where you don't feel like you have a grip.

The nature of parenting is unpredictability and chaos (at least it was for me). Before lil I was on multiple committees at church, ran a state NP group, was working, etc. I was into so many things people would ask me how I managed but I didn't think it was that hard. If you asked people they would have described me as uber organized. When I had lil I felt it was all I could do to remember to put underwear on in the AM some days. Planning things a month out was a crap shoot. What if he was having a bad day, what if I was having a bad day, what if the last few days were bad and I needed to catch up? Between my schedule and mr les' schedule any glitch was a major one. I didn't want to commit to anything past the next few hours because that was as far as my mind would go. Sad but true.

Morning Lodge. Monsoons here. We are over 1" over the month average for rain and another inch or so to come. At least the ponds/lakes will be full when they freeze.

I had an a-hole behind me on the freeway flashing his high beams at me for no reason I could figure out, finally decided that he wanted me to tailgate in that downpour like he was tailgating me. He finally got an opening and roared past me on the right, so that he could then tailgate the car in front of me. Sooo smart, made his commute so much shorter to be in front of me. Guess what he was driving - yes, from Bavaria. I assume we all know the difference between a BMW and a porcupine.

Whenever you feel like your job is useless, remember that there are people that put turn signals on BMW's.

Whenever you feel useless, remember that a single one of your pubic hairs can shut down an entire restaurant....
