Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #178: Oh, mookie's dreams...

We paid the extra $29 on the flight home from Japan for more leg room seats. That way I could stand at my seat and not need to wake the person on the aisle.

We got three seats together on both legs going over so I will only be waking my son or wife. ;) I have not looked, but they may be exit row as well. ETA: Not exit row.

Getting ready to board my flight to Baltimore and there is a crying infant sitting across from me. Let's see how close they are on board. Mother is now breastfeeding, which is AOK with me because said infant isn't crying as much.

I'd be wary of the Seattle area until the known effects of their minimum wage hike are truly there to be seen and political skewings one way or the other can be easily seen through.

Austin is very hot. Damm hot! Same goes with Scottsdale - though college hockey's coming to a nearby city, so there would be some reprieve.

Raleigh, NC, could be a good locale. Sam Francisco is till fighting to get out from under the its older brother San's shadow, though otherwise could be entertaining.

I don't know enough about Portland one way or the other to comment on it.

There are five things i don't like about Seattle:

1) Weather - damp, cold, wet, dreary, etc
2) Traffic - you can't drive here without a ton of traffic. And stay away from downtown at all costs if you are in a car.
3) Cost of Living - you get to pay more for everything here - and the $15/hour minimum wage hasn't kicked in yet.
4) Politics - if you lean waaaay left, you will fit in nicely - I don't
5) Weather - see #1

Austin's one of my top 5 all-time city choices. Plenty of stuff to do, tons of good jobs, young, vibrant, low state taxes...basically all the good parts of Texas with less of the derp. Seattle and Portland are pretty much known quantities, nice if you can afford them. Raleigh is sneaky good as well - rapidly becoming a STEM hub. Scottsdale is too hot and too geezer-y for my tastes. SF is way too **** expensive - prepare to live in Oakland or have a two hour commute.

I've liked Raleigh so far, but most of my family is west coast now. So there is something to being a bit closer than a 5 hr flight.

Wife doesn't want snow/cold if she can avoid it. So basically the midwest is a no go.

6) The 'Big One' is coming and it'll make the San Andreas one look like a minor inconvenience by comparison.

Tx is last (or darn close) in education, some health care measures. If you are young, have the wherewithal to send your potential kid to private school or live in a rich town, have excellent HC insurance and disability in case you get in big medical trouble then that is a great place. (People where I live are always posting # from Tx as a way to make us look good and we are pretty bad)

Raliegh is nice- have friends that lived there and loved it.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #178: Oh, mookie's dreams...

I have a bunch of family on my mom's side in the Raleigh area. As mentioned, it has been rapidly expanding towards the outskirts with development, mainly STEM related. It can get pretty dang hot and humid in the summer, and typically good for a trace or small snow accumulation at least once a winter. While you could most likely handle it, the rest of the idiots CANNOT. As in, virtual mayhem on the roads.

As my uncle says, "the roads can get bad, the drivers get treacherous."

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #178: Oh, mookie's dreams...

Out of all of those I'd probably chose Raleigh, but the weather might kill me off. Texas would be fine, but again, weather is terrible there.

I think if we were to move out of the upper Midwest, the destination would be Alaska.

Good Afternoon Lodge.

Part of NY is green on the GasBuddy map; something must be seriously wrong somewhere.

Good point. Shortly after we moved here, the Nisqually quake hit. It was about 6.8, but luckily was 30 miles deep. It did enough damage that the politicians jumped on the opportunity to convince the populace that the whole city would soon be destroyed. One result of that is the current debacle known as the Seattle Tunnel. We were told that the Alaskan Way viaduct would crumble any minute and it MUST be replaced. That was 14 years ago, and many engineers have said that some retrofitting would make it good as new. Oh no, we must spend billions of dollars on a tunnel that would open up the waterfront. The tunnel boring machine (known affectionately as Big Bertha) has tunneled about 1000 feet and broke. It is being repaired and they are supposed to start drilling again in November. I can hardly wait for Bertha to break again, this time under a building and the owner tell the state to shove it when they want to try to get it out of the ground to fix it again. And then there is the very good chance that an 8.5 earthquake makes it all go boom.

F CA. Don't care much for the lack of work ethic in the SE, either. Texas? If you can handle the weather, go for it. Seems nice. For a working person, I'd only recommend CO, for my tastes. As a MN, trading lakes for mountains, basically. Just about packed up and moved a couple years ago, but work got better. Still have it in mind for retirement IF I decide to relocate.

Yo. 52 hours or so left on the boat for this go around. Pretty stoked to get home and get a couple football games/tailgates, golf and probably some Disney time in.
