Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #173: (Insert Title)

Getting to play is getting to play. Even better that it's actually through the school.

Kids here who for whatever reason(s) don't play for their high school play midget with a club. Becomes a co-op team and isn't ideal.

Can he tryout for hs team and still join Jr Gold if he gets cut?

It's gotten to the point with tryouts that I joke that we're going and at least making them tell us "NO!"

That's starting to turn now and maybe we get over the hump tonight. Been told "no" so many times...

He can try out for Jr Gold if he gets cut from the high school team. He did that last year but didn't make the JG team - I think he was so disappointed from the high school result he wasn't really trying for JG. Also, they took mostly upper classmen for JG, kids who had played JV the year before, did not make varsity, and the coach won't keep juniors and seniors on JV. Normally Jr Gold is through local associations, just the next step after bantam. The community the school is located in, and from which they rent ice time, doesn't support a Jr Gold team so they let the school fill out the JG team. The talk last year was they would tie the JG team more closely and add it to the school's ice time request up front - you want to keep renting us ice, we'll take ice time for 5 teams instead of 4 (boys and girls varsity and jv and JG).

The high school tryout was Mon-Thurs of scrimmages within the team, and on Friday night 2 scrimmages with other schools, then Saturday morning two more scrimmages with other schools. The scrimmages were two 25 minute running time halves with resurfacing between so they took about 75 minutes. Jr got told by head coach that if he'd played on Saturday like he did on Friday he'd have made the team. He ran out of gas with the hard week. That was the point, the coach wanted to see who had the stamina. Hopefully Jr will listen to his mom and dad this year and make sure he is in shape by tryout week. He needs to be quite a bit better though as he won't make JV as a junior where he could have last year as a soph.

Probably who would bring the effort on a consistent basis or as a habit also. I doubt the coach would allow being tired as an excuse, so your point of being in shape is a good one.

I've been hammering home to my kid to give them a reason to want you over the 15 other kids out there who look just like you... who have the same talent or skill level.

My kid's got nice skill, but it's not elite skill. He's a good player (not great), but sets himself apart with his high motor and physicality... his level of compete. His guts.

At this stage, with what he's been trying out for, everyone has talent. Not everyone competes at a high level with consistency. Not everyone battles or goes into corners hard. Not everyone plays with an edge.

Give the coach a reason to notice you. Give him a reason to want you or view you as an asset. Coz that's what players are on the macro level... assets.

Anyway... my .02

I will say though (as a former coach/evaluator) that kids who consistently kill themselves to compete jump off the ice at you. I'd always want those over a more skilled player who was complacent.

You can teach/coach skill. You can't teach/coach work ethic or guts.

Hopefully your boy tries out, assuming he wants to.

At worst, make them tell you no. At least then you can go on without the regret of not trying.

My kid found those in a candy store in LaCrosse this summer. I would have guessed that they weren't even manufactured anymore.

Speaking of the kid... final tryout for a fall U-16 select team tonight at which he's in the running for the A team. Needs to beat out 4 other kids.

This would be a big accomplishment for a kid that's had to scratch and claw his way to this level for 10 years. He's never made an "A" team of this stature - meaning a regional team as opposed to a club team.

If he doesn't make it, he'd be on the B team. Heard though from an insider that he's impressed the evaluation panel thus far. We'll see.

I'm nervous. He's at home "chillin'."
Good luck! Only 600$. Sheesh we paid at least 3 times that

Said I was at the ER, not that I was in the ER.

Wifey needed stitches, cut herself while cleaning up the kitchen just before bed.
ouch

Back to work in the morning. Staying in Memphis tonight, a little too close to Graceland/Elvis territory. But I am having some Memphis BBQ for dinner, so I've got that going for me...

If hockey doesn't work have him try Nordic.....my lad took to it immediately. Anyone can sit and watch a hockey game; it takes guts to stand a watch a Nordic race! :D

Have to say i miss yute sports. A few years ago a couple buddies I coached with and I were kicking around the idea of taking an A PW or squirt team somewhere, that would be fun but I suspect it was the beer talking. ;)

Da UP (Houghton) still sells the "good" candy cigs with the old names and such. Blew my mind when I saw them the first time I visited there. It was even at a gas station where I saw (and bought) them.

Yeah, my company found the candy Luckies for a Mad Men themed party when our new HQ opened a couple years ago. They also found fake cigs that looked exactly like the real thing, except for the glittery red tip - they even emitted a white powdery "smoke" for about 10-15 "puffs".

The martinis were real though and strong (I was still drinking at the time, and definitely took a cab home).

Good Morning Lodge.

I doubt it's a hard and fast rule, just unlikely. I'm sure if he saw something that made him think the kid could improve and help varsity in a year he would keep him. It's tough with the numbers and talent in the program though.

Today's my last day in the office before vacation. And for half the day, I'm working this event of which I am the project manager. I'm getting the "Oh, I need you to do all these things" comments from peole. Um, I've told you all forever what my schedule is. Why can I never leave for vacation???
