Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #173: (Insert Title)
The high school tryout was Mon-Thurs of scrimmages within the team, and on Friday night 2 scrimmages with other schools, then Saturday morning two more scrimmages with other schools. The scrimmages were two 25 minute running time halves with resurfacing between so they took about 75 minutes. Jr got told by head coach that if he'd played on Saturday like he did on Friday he'd have made the team. He ran out of gas with the hard week. That was the point, the coach wanted to see who had the stamina. Hopefully Jr will listen to his mom and dad this year and make sure he is in shape by tryout week. He needs to be quite a bit better though as he won't make JV as a junior where he could have last year as a soph.
Probably who would bring the effort on a consistent basis or as a habit also. I doubt the coach would allow being tired as an excuse, so your point of being in shape is a good one.
I've been hammering home to my kid to give them a reason to want you over the 15 other kids out there who look just like you... who have the same talent or skill level.
My kid's got nice skill, but it's not elite skill. He's a good player (not great), but sets himself apart with his high motor and physicality... his level of compete. His guts.
At this stage, with what he's been trying out for, everyone has talent. Not everyone competes at a high level with consistency. Not everyone battles or goes into corners hard. Not everyone plays with an edge.
Give the coach a reason to notice you. Give him a reason to want you or view you as an asset. Coz that's what players are on the macro level... assets.
Anyway... my .02
I will say though (as a former coach/evaluator) that kids who consistently kill themselves to compete jump off the ice at you. I'd always want those over a more skilled player who was complacent.
You can teach/coach skill. You can't teach/coach work ethic or guts.
