Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #173: (Insert Title)

I won't claim the Millennials. I was born in '82, which some use as the 1st year to define Millenials. I have far more in commonn with Gen X than Millennials (even if I was given participation trophies for rec league bouncy ball).

I'm also on the edge of the "dead zone" as an '83. I feel I had the younger childhood of an X and the older adolescence/young adulthood of a Millennial. I was also from kind of a rural/no-man's-land area, so we were behind the culture wave a few years as well.

I ran XC and track in HS, didn't win jack shiat, but didn't really figure I would either. There wasn't really any pressure, I was just enjoying myself.

I was getting out of school juuuuust as the "everybody gets a trophy" culture was starting to take shape. There were vestiges of it, but it wasn't really rolling until I was gone.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #173: (Insert Title)

I was born in '77, played hockey from the '84-85 to the '91-92 seasons. We received participation trophies each year. My teams were always horrible, maybe winning a third of our games, so the trophies didn't ever mean much of anything to the kids playing but the adults sure did seem to like them. Most of mine hit the trash within a week or so. A couple of them were kept around because I didn't want my mom to come down on me for not appreciating the experience or something. At least we still kept score during our games.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #173: (Insert Title)

Born in 1981, played Little League baseball and I bowled. No participation trophies for us, but we did get patches when we hit a certain score. For example, if you bowled a 180, you got a patch for that.

And I didn't start running until my late 20s. Most of the races I have finished, I get a medal for (half-marathons, 25K, and marathons). The two 5K medals I have came as a result of being one of three people in my age group.

Good evening Lodge.

Camp is set up, it's 70 degrees, the lake is glass, not a cloud in the sky and not a bug to be found. Steaks have been grilled and consumed and the boys are fishing and loving it. Next item on the agenda is a cocktail.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #173: (Insert Title)

I was born in 1971. I was a man by 1975. No skirts allowed. Didn't have to walk uphill both ways to school like some Lodgers. :D

Graduated HS in 78, BSN in 82, MSN in 88 which means I am older than most of you except a few outliers (RFAlph). I didn't get any trophies because girls didn't do sports competitively until HS. Did run in JHS but no trophies, just a pat on the back even tho I placed.

Lil played hockey, bsb, lax, and is still running. bsb they got trophies one yr because one of the league sponsors was a trophy place other than that only trophies for winning or 2nd. Hockey they got a few. Lax none.

As an aside- this graduation business is one gigantic sucking sound coming from my wallet. $ for prom pics, grad pics, cap and gown, prom, class outing, sports banquet, grad night after party, T-shirt for after party, tent for his grad party, all the grad party expenses..... schhhhhhhhhhhuck.......

Ahem...

Jr was born in 97. He might have gotten some participation trophies in house league soccer, if so, they're long gone. Otherwise in soccer and hockey only trophies were for first or second.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #173: (Insert Title)

1983 here. I played outside all year round. Didn't get participation trophies in baseball. If you didn't win, you got nothing. Deal with it.

Coon Rapids Little League still does this to this very day. Might be why they are so darn good.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #173: (Insert Title)

Nearing the unofficial "over the hill" age, and didn't get participation trophies, only Top 3 ever got anything. Played bouncyball and baseball until HS, then just bouncyball for a year before getting a job and not doing the athletics thing in school.

As for job, the only place I would ever consider relocating to is CO, and it'd have to be a helluva deal for me to leave MN. Like, golden parachute/win lotto/here's a crapton of money just because, sorta thing.

I'd leave for Northern California, Oregon, or Washington. Same situation for the reasoning though. Has to be a great step up.

It was hinted that NoCal was possibly an option for me about 2 years ago. All the nopes. Not Cali. No way. Chi and SC have been options in the past, and Chi is our HQ, so always opportunities there.

Chicago is an awesome town. I don't know if I could live there for more than a few years, though.

Oh, and ALL of their sports can die in a fire. ;)

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #173: (Insert Title)

Well that was dumb...

Went and played with my ****ed up back and now I can barely move. Luckily I have a PT appointment tomorrow AM. ;)

Anyway, born in 69. Have a couple of little league participation trophies from t-ball and the first couple years of pitch. They're still in my box of stuff from my childhood although I sucked at baseball and didn't like it so don't know why I've kept them Just remind me of my dad's disappointment in me. :p

Have a lot of ribbons from swimming - where we only got them for placing.

Have a few first place (nothing lower ) medals for singing - both solo and chorus.

Have nothing from hockey or soccer.

The boy has a couple of participation trophies from initiation hockey and cross-ice, but after that, the only things he has are from placing of which his favorites are the back to back pee wee state championship medals.

He also has a baseball league championship trophy and a couple of game balls from that season.

Nothing from lacrosse although the program he plays for wins a pile of games and has placed in several tourneys.

I know that a lot of activities give trophies for just about anything, but we really haven't seen it.

PS - Oh yeah and the boy was more lifetime accomplished as an athlete than me about 4 years ago.

Well, technically it's Minooka IL (it was recently built), but close enough.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #173: (Insert Title)

Oh yeah, and Minooka is decidedly not Chicago or even close. Over and hour from downtown and in an island of cornfields.

Ah, then I DEFINITELY wouldn't go there. :p

Makes sense on location, IIRC it's something like 1MM sq ft or some obscene size.
