Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #172: Did you see your shadow?

Picked up my taxes tonight, they are going to efile tomorrow. I was warned last year I might get hit a little bit harder this year, but apparently I didn't. Getting back about the same as last year for state/fed, and almost double back my renter's credit compared to last year, which was a very nice surprise. Might have to go on a small Amazon spree once I get those funds in the ol' account. :)

Who's going to Boston for a final interview in two weeks? This guy. :)

Excited for this opportunity. It would have me working with the same cutting-edge software I currently do, but more in-depth, and with a lot more customer exposure/travel.

The good thing is you didn't get a local degree so you don't have to deal with the degree hierarchy crud that locals do.

The issue around us is flooding. One spot a few hundred yards from us has a 5 foot fountain spewing water. In all my years I have never witnessed anything like it. There are numerous spots on the "road" in/out of here that are impossible to navigate due to water. This is causing the plowers to divert and make a new road. These new roads are snow packed and covered in huge drifts. Quite the ordeal.

Well there's something you don't see every day.

Good Morning Lodge. Cold here again (still).

where's this water coming from, pray tell!?!?!?!?! last i heard there was 3 solid as a rock feet of ice :D

A lake with ice on it is an amazingly complex system. The ice is floating on the water. You add more weight on top of the ice and the dynamics change. Add enough weight (like several inches of heavy, wet snow over an area measured in square miles, i.e. thousands of tons) and the ice presses down on the water beneath. Water is incompressible so it has to go somewhere - it comes up to the top of the ice somehow. It finds cracks, holes, weak spots and oozes, squirts, sprays through. In general several feet of ice on a large lake is quite safe - in general. But stuff happens and it can become unsafe quickly.

Even my little pond (~5 acres) reacts in funny ways. When the ice is pretty thick - almost a foot, and I blow the snow off the rink the ice bows upward where I cleared the snow off. The weight of the snow I moved presses down and the cleared area rises up in response. Sometimes the water comes up beneath the snow and makes a real mess. I get a crown in my rink and big cracks in the ice.

Mornin' y'all. Need a productive day today, then it's practice, team meal, film prep, and I'm gonna need to just relax and let our preparation take over.

Thanks for the well wishes, Dave.
