Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #170: Fair Weather

Good evening Lodge.

I set the tent up in the backyard a couple days ago just as a test to make sure I know how to get it set up in the great outdoors. It's an awesome tent. Looks like some storms are forming to the west. When/if it hits I'm going in the tent to see how it handles because I'm quite sure the weather will be nasty when we go camping. I plan on taking the boys camping almost every weekend I can until the fall weather turns to winter.

Good evening Lodge. Finally ready for vacation. I leave for the left coast right from work tomorrow. I drove back into the office tonight to bring my suitcase in so I wouldn't have to lug it in on the T in the morning.

Work has been insane lately. I need to block off an hour tomorrow morning to do my "While I'm out" lists. Hoping to stay offline Friday and Monday but I know I will be checking email and doing work when I get home. I land at 12:30am Wednesday and was planning to take the rest of the week off. I hope that happens.

Soooo... I just got a 2nd job offer. This one is 25% more base salary. What to do.

Also, what is the business etiquette for declining a job you've already accepted if I decided to go that route?

I guess when it rains it pours.

Ever so politely tell them that you're sorry, but another offer has come up that's really exciting you. They'll either counter with another offer for more money or wish you the best of luck while cursing you after you hang up the phone.

The pay is really the only thing I like better about the 2nd offer. But it's such a large difference its making it tough to ignore.

ask them if they'll counter... but yeah, you'd have to decide if you would take the other job if they don't.

I will second that.

They don't need to know that. They only need to know that you've got another offer and that they implicitly have a chance to keep you from taking it.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #170: Fair Weather

if the pay was equal, what position with which company is the more attractive one to take??

If pay is the ONLY difference to you, then follow St. Clown's advice. Otherwise, you need to give some very quick thought to your perceived differences between the employers and decide what is most important to you. Don't delay on this, since it's professional to deliver a response either way within 24 hours.

I don't agree with outright asking for a counter offer from the first company, it smacks of opportunism and indicates you're going to continue looking for more money the minute you're employed. If they truly want you, they will counter without you trying to extort them.

Yes, by no means do you ask for the counter offer, but you state that you have another opportunity which then gives them the chance to make one. If they don't, then you go to Offer 2 and accept it.

I asked "can you do anything?" after receiving a better job offer, once. Current employer at the time made the better offer. Second time around (about a year later), got another "better offer" and didn't ask. Then-current employer didn't even bother. I knew they couldn't/wouldn't match (more likely couldn't), and I walked. Never regretted it. That better offer the second time around? My current job, 12+ years now.

Good Morning Lodge.

I could use a "better offer" about now. Still regret I did not pursue one that came up about 6 months ago...

Spending the next couple hours submitting apps and resumes so I can receive an offer.

And after that, I need to make cookies.
