General hotel rules state that you can book a room 50 weeks in advance. I have done that (approx) for the F4 and now the F5. It's highly recommended. So, you can book now, if you want (and I would). The Crowne's cancellation policy is generous, also. Something like a week in advance with no penalty or something.

This also means there'll be zero movement on those fully-booked hotels until the moment the penalty phase begins, but once you get there things can happen fast. We were just in Austin, TX for spring break, and it happened to be the week that South By Southwest opened. About a month before our trip we wanted to see about adding on one more night at our hotel: only one room available, and they'd have to cancel our original reservation and rebook a new one, all at the higher price of $400/night. Zoinks! So we said no way.

Then, on our last day at this hotel, we got on the Marriott website to check on another reservation, and right at the top of the site it said, "Rooms now available in Austin!" ??? We went to the front desk, they said, Yes we've got rooms. How much if we add one more night to our stay? $199. We said How can that be? They said everybody books up everything one year in advance, just to make sure they've got it if they need it. Then every year at the last second there are lots of cancellations. So it's likely you can get lucky, if you want to take the chance. Caveat emptor, etc.

Of course, that's only Austin and music and tech stuff; not exactly the passion of Scandahoovian hockey nuts. :p

The problem with professions like teaching and other public sector jobs is that if incompetent / bad employees somehow make it through the probationary period and basically secure their spot for the remainder of their careers, they can do enormous damage to all who come in contact with them. The system as it exists is horribly flawed; handing automatic raises and generous benefits to people just because they made tenure is ridiculous. Looking back to when I was in school, I can think of a number of teachers who were mediocre and clearly careerists. The steady paycheck is what kept them there, not a passion for teaching or a desire to get the most out of their students. People like that need to be let go and replaced by those who have a greater passion to get their kids to learn (I also remember a number who were in this category, and they should have been rewarded for it).

As a taxpayer, I'd be fully willing to pay teachers more - a lot more - IF that goes along with the system being reformed. Scrap the seniority nonsense and union protectionism. Replace it with performance incentives, and put greater emphasis on the jobs teachers are doing prior to junior high. Being able to read, to comprehend, to communicate, and to reason are the keys to everything. Kids who struggle or are way behind in those areas thanks to half-***ed teachers and/or parents are very nearly a lost cause once they're in high school.

As far as classroom supplies go, instead of teachers going begging for this, that, and the other thing, I say give all these administrators a pay freeze and / or pay cut and use that money to buy what's needed. Superintendents and principals make **** good money.

That's it, I'm done with D-I until at least next season, maybe longer. The level of stupid is just to much for me to handle.

Our superintendent just left for a job that pays more but the reason he left is because our town now is ranked LAST in spending per student and they were yapping at him about budget still. We still had someone running on the ticket for School Committee that promised to never vote for an over ride to increase school funding. All you said is true. Get out the ones who are deadwood (this superintendent was doing that and I loved him for it) and bring in those who have the passion. In our case it might be good to have people in the community actually care that thier kids are short changed. Lil is in Honors classes but the level of academic rigor is not what it could be even for him.

Really? it took you this long to figure this out?

We could put a hit on JDUBBS and that would drop the level of stupid by a huge amount. I think I know where he lives....at least I know his dad's name.

What has put me over the edge was receiving neg rep for telling people to NOT RESPOND to the troll AND receiving neg rep for trying to explain the unwritten rule (at least among wester fans) about leaving the other teams general thread alone.

Idiots, the both of them and many others.

OR everyone could just ignore him and he'd get bored and go away, but that's be to simple and easy, DAMMIT!

So I'm on the boat until May 31. Not pumped about that, but I'll be seeing lots of new area, and possibly even be able to drive home from West Virginia instead of flying. That would be nice.

But having him whacked would be way more fun!

True, but it would only treat the problem, the stupid that engages with the trolls would remain.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #149 - Best adaptation of a movie title-and the lodgie goes

Things that annoy the **** out of me today:

1. Co-worker talks to me end of day yesterday needing my hel. She asks if I can meet with her, she has time today. I said yes, my calendar is up to date. Does she set up a meeting? Of course not. I think she's waiting for me to set the time. I'm sorry but you're the one who asked. You set up the meeting.

2. Walking to the T station I have to cross the exit of a parking garage. There is a cop there every day to hold cars from exiting so people can cross and hold people so cars can exit. Walking by tonight there are a few people waiting do cars can exit as per the police officer and two people decide they don't have to obey any lines and promptly walk thru the small crowd because more ****ing important the rest of us.

End rant.

Hey, I can try and dig out my ACT scores, if I can, I'd be happy to compare them straight up tower boy.
ctf scored well on her ACT's...you're not helping your case. :D

The level of stupid won't go away just because it's next season...

Got everything done that I needed to today. It would be nice if the customers at least had a shack to put their gensets in, with, oh maybe a chair and a table...nope, that is never the case, it is always sitting in a parking lot, on the ground.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #149 - Best adaptation of a movie title-and the lodgie goes

I'm not going to get into a whole debate about the problems with the public school system in our country, I'm sure there are political threads here in the cafe for that. I will say that none of what you say holds water in my son's case in our school district.

In our schools if the teacher is short of supplies, they simply send out an e-mail to the parents saying "all students need to bring in these supplies for the classroom " and the supplies will come in. The Edina schools are full and if they were not, they could accept more open enrolled students because there are more applying each year than they can accept.

None of what you said explains why his 8th grade math teacher is great, fully organized and on top of everything, and his 7th grade math teacher couldn't find her *** with both hands. There are great teachers at Edina. There are also many mediocre teachers and some awful teachers, many of whom have been there and known to the parents as awful for years. I don't think those teachers stick around in the privates. The teachers union makes it near impossible to get rid of the bad teachers and the principal's main job seems to be to protect the teachers, not help the kids.
As long as it wasn't his 7th grade social studies teacher.
