Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 145: are you giving up something for lent??

So after 6 years at Tech, 4 years being out of Tech, and 2 years living in Alaska...I finally bought my first Leatherman. I feel shame.
I had one when I was growing up, took it with me everywhere (except school, after the crazy administration decided it was bad to have knives at school). I know I had it at Tech, but I have no idea where it is now. I either lost it or it is in a box of stuff that I've never had a good reason to unpack after coming home from Houghton.

huh? what is that?

Collapsible multitool. Basically a Swiss Army knife on steroids. Multiple blades, bit drivers, pliers, wire strippers, etc.

Owning one at a techie school or in an outdoorsy area is pretty much required by law.

My kid has a small one. I prefer more usable individual tools - pliers and knife most often.

Ah. I think Mr has one of those but I don't think he knows it is cool :p

Leathermans are ok in a pinch, but if you're going to do any kind of a real work, definitely get the right tool for the job.

You are correct.

I always have mine readily available when I go camping or fishing and such. The tool makes MacGyvering easier to accomplish.

I went with the Skeletool because it has a belt clip, which lets me clip it to my belt and attach a keychain dangling into my pocket like I usually do.

Almost got a Wave, kinda kicking myself that I didn't. Those are really nice.

Let me know when you're camping or fishing, so I don't have to see that. :D

If you're going for low-key, which is what I translate "less ridiculous" to, then boots are a good choice. You can get some boots that won't be out of place with what you'd normally wear, and since your pants will cover the boot tops, they're barely noticable. Plus, if you get the right ones, they're really comfortable.

Exactly, that's what I'm aiming for. Not that ostrich skin and flaming tattoo hearts stitched up the side wouldn't make a nice, subtle statement. :p

Some of the Leatherman pliers are better than regular pliers, to be fair. They also tend to have very nice, sharp blades.

My family always got Gerber and Fiskars stuff though, since my mom worked for another of their divisions and got free samples all the time. Hence why I have a Gerber folding saw, some random little multitool, and a "Stud Gator" folding knife, and a Fiskars hatchet. :)

Dude! I'm saying that I know they'd look ridiculous ON ME. Plenty of people can pull it off. The whole underlying point is that I have to be careful not to be the guy who picks up some crazy cowboy stuff while on vacation. Like buying a beret 'cause you're in Paris, then trying to wear one back here. Maybe if you're already working it, or if you're Johnny Depp; but most guys can't just start it up out of the blue. It has nothing to do with whether ostrich boots (or lizard, or whatever) are good, or not good. :)
