Nearly all companies do as a means of employee retention. And you'll find it at different rates. For my company, if you work certain holidays, you get 150% of your pay for the hours you work, in addition to the Holiday pay everyone else receives at their standard rates. For instance, if I made $10/hr, and worked 8 hrs on the 4th, then I would get $15/hr for being there, plus another $10/hr of Holiday pay for 8 hrs time, regardless of how many hours I actually worked. Very few people in my company work those sorts of holidays. As it stands, I'll receive eight hours of pay for Thursday, but won't be in the office one minute.Huh. Learn something new every day. Target pays out (worked for them in college), my old job paid out (family-owned Inc), and my current company (big corporation) pays out. Figured it was state law or something.
At the same time, this is the first company where I've not been salaried and yet received holiday pay. When I was with US Bank, I was salaried, so it was expected. Now that I'm at another financial institution, and everyone who's not management is hourly, this is a first for me. Granted, it's a first that's lasted nine years now, but it still points to the fact that holiday pay is not required. Even when I worked full-time landscaping for a few years, I worked the 4th only once when weather had us behind, and I was paid my standard wage for the day. Otherwise, during those other years it was just a day off the clock.Well, sure, I get paid on holidays even though I won't be there (like tomorrow). I believe our night shift, since their shift starts on the 4th, will get paid time and a half, though.
We've only ever received the day of the holiday off, never a day before or after without taking a PTO day. That said, because we have to mirror the Feds, my company has 10 paid holidays.I've been tacky & abrasive for over 20 years and have always received holiday pay for the Big 6 holidays plus the day after T-day and (almost always, unless Christmas is on a Thursday then we get the 26th off) Christmas Eve.
This year is the first time I remember not getting the day before/after the 4th off if the 4th fell on a Tuesday/Thursday. Grrrr

I don't know PT/FT rules anymore, nor do I know MI's state rules. In MN, I believe it's only FT employees that get time/half for holiday pay, but I do believe they do get it for the full shift, not just the hours worked on that holiday.
Holiday pay rates are not dictated by the state here.
Then again, I'm still temporary, so I might not get credit after all. I still have a couple weeks before Wal-Mart makes their decision about that...Huh. Learn something new every day. having me check their email when they are gone.
Hang in there.
Checking others emails? In my world 1) I would never allow anyone access to my email and 2) if I did, it would more than likely involve disciplinary action up to and including possible termination. ( obviously there is always the potential to access ones email for emergencies and such)
