Huh. Learn something new every day. Target pays out (worked for them in college), my old job paid out (family-owned Inc), and my current company (big corporation) pays out. Figured it was state law or something.
Nearly all companies do as a means of employee retention. And you'll find it at different rates. For my company, if you work certain holidays, you get 150% of your pay for the hours you work, in addition to the Holiday pay everyone else receives at their standard rates. For instance, if I made $10/hr, and worked 8 hrs on the 4th, then I would get $15/hr for being there, plus another $10/hr of Holiday pay for 8 hrs time, regardless of how many hours I actually worked. Very few people in my company work those sorts of holidays. As it stands, I'll receive eight hours of pay for Thursday, but won't be in the office one minute.

Well, sure, I get paid on holidays even though I won't be there (like tomorrow). I believe our night shift, since their shift starts on the 4th, will get paid time and a half, though.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #13^2: Independence!

Hi kids. Drove in to work this morning as I will working tonight on the Esplanade for the dress rehearsal of the Boston Pops concert. I don't recall the route I took last year when I did this but it was onviously different as the traffic was insane. My route to the office takes me right by the Hatch Shell and the state police have already closed off the right lane of the road it's on. And I know that. Because I've been working non stop on the event. So it took me an hour and 12 minutes to drive the just under 5 miles from my house to the office.

Tonight is a full dress rehearsal - basically everything but the fireworks. This show is recorded in case anything happens during the live show on the 4th. Like last year, when the lightning storm hit and the crowd was forced to evacuate. The show was nationwide at that point so they had to show something - they had the show from the 3rd.

I am a bit anxious for the weather - today/tonight looks sketchy. Tomorrow I think will be fine but hot and humid. I'll be there at 9am and not leave till probably 11pm. Friday I am taking a comp day. And sleeping. I am also a bit anxious about security and getting the stuff I need for the day past all the checkpoints. Wish me luck!! And think happy thoughts that nothing happens.

At the same time, this is the first company where I've not been salaried and yet received holiday pay. When I was with US Bank, I was salaried, so it was expected. Now that I'm at another financial institution, and everyone who's not management is hourly, this is a first for me. Granted, it's a first that's lasted nine years now, but it still points to the fact that holiday pay is not required. Even when I worked full-time landscaping for a few years, I worked the 4th only once when weather had us behind, and I was paid my standard wage for the day. Otherwise, during those other years it was just a day off the clock.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #13^2: Independence!

I've been tacky & abrasive for over 20 years and have always received holiday pay for the Big 6 holidays plus the day after T-day and (almost always, unless Christmas is on a Thursday then we get the 26th off) Christmas Eve.

This year is the first time I remember not getting the day before/after the 4th off if the 4th fell on a Tuesday/Thursday. Grrrr

We've only ever received the day of the holiday off, never a day before or after without taking a PTO day. That said, because we have to mirror the Feds, my company has 10 paid holidays.

New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #13^2: Independence!

We get New Year's Day, Patriot's Day (because the marathon finish line is 2 blcoks from our office), Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, day after Thanksgiving, Christmas. Columbus Day is a holiday in MA and all of our other offices in MA are closed that day except for us because we close on Patriot's Day and they do not. Depending on when Christmas falls, we sometimes get Christmas Eve day off, but can't count on that to always happen. Everyone thought the office would be closed this Friday, but I knew it wouldn't. I'm getting it off without wasting a vacation day because I worked on a paid holiday.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #13^2: Independence!

Bonus holidays in Boat land are Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years. We get double pay those days. However all other holidays are just another day, and depending on our schedule, we may or may not get them off (working 8 months a year, usually it falls in the may not.)

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #13^2: Independence!

Current company has 8 paid holidays, and I think that is few (or did until reading this thread). Previous 2 jobs had 11 paid holidays.
Currently I get: New Years Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving + day after, Christmas Day, and a "floating" that is predetermined...this year it is this Friday. Depending on the calendar it may be Christmas eve, or new years eve.

2 jobs ago I did not get the 4th of July off, because it was shut down week for the union, and since they were not paid for shutdown, we did not get a paid holiday, or something like that.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #13^2: Independence!

When I was working, I got 10 per year: New Year's Day, MLK Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. We also got Inauguration Day off every four years but that could be the same day as MLK Day and we lost it if it was on a Saturday. Every time that Xmas was a Tuesday or Thursday we got an extra day off although it is not officially in the list of Holidays. And we also got off a day whenever a former President passed away. :)

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #13^2: Independence!

I don't know PT/FT rules anymore, nor do I know MI's state rules. In MN, I believe it's only FT employees that get time/half for holiday pay, but I do believe they do get it for the full shift, not just the hours worked on that holiday.

Holiday pay rates are not dictated by the state here.

Then again, I'm still temporary, so I might not get credit after all. I still have a couple weeks before Wal-Mart makes their decision about that...

I've decided that since I can't drink on the 4th or 5th, the 6th will have to suffice.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #13^2: Independence!

So I found out today that I have been passed over the customer service manager position. They are going to give it to my co-worker (who I have seniority over) that I have used Hammer's shovel several times on. The first thing I said was to make me my own entity. They are fine with that. They are going to have the new manager my "supervisor" but has nothing to do with me. It is only for title purpose. The upside is that I don't have to answer phones as much and I can focus on the project I have been working on since September and is continuous.

I found out about this last week by seeing information that I shouldn't have seen. That is my current manager's fault for having me check their email when they are gone.

having me check their email when they are gone.

Hang in there.

Checking others email? In my world 1) I would never allow anyone access to my email and 2) if I did, it would more than likely involve disciplinary action up to and including possible termination. ( obviously there is always the potential to access ones email for emergencies and such)

My current manager has the main email setup for her email. It is her fault for having 2 email addresses being sent to one place. I am searching for a new job in the area. There are a few leads that I am pulling strings with.
