Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 120: How do you want to die?

/me preps for taking heat on this one.

I've got a '05 Scion xB (1st gen, the boxy version). Over 113k on it, and I've only had one maintenance issue, and have only needed to replace the brakes once. Blast to drive, lots of interior space given the overall size of the car due to the box shape, and its great on fuel (~ 25/30.) I'll admit its either a love/hate car, but I've transformed a lot of impressions once people get inside it.

Thank you for the info, we are considering a Scion for our next car. :)

Let me know if you need any opinions on any of them... I've got the '05 XB, my dad has the '08 XB (newer gen), my sister has the '09 XD, and my mom has the '10 Tc... suffice to say we enjoy them all.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 120: How do you want to die?

Well, we do have goat theives.
Thats what it was....
Buy one that's a year old and save yourself the depreciation. Knocking a year off the car's life is worth the 35-50% in savings.

True. My Malibu was a lease trade in, mostly because it was only fleet cars that they didn't put Onstar in 2004. Only big thing I've had to have fixed on it was the cruise controll on it, switch there went bad, but I tend to use that a lot and if I recall, was still under warranty. Its plenty roomy, and I can even get my massage table in the back hatch with enough room to see out the back window.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 120: How do you want to die?

Good morning, Lodge.

The funeral was good yesterday; lots of people there, including my brother and family I haven't seen in years. And everyone I talked to reminded me that Mom isn't suffering anymore... that's the one thing I'm taking comfort in right now.
That is quite a comfort (having worked in a hospital and closely with a doctor - my dad- for years; it's amazing how much the alleviation of suffering can impact a family for the better).
I echo the sentiments that perhaps this will bring your family closer.
Good morning Lodge.

A good friend of the g family has been having some health issues the last couple weeks. Received a text last night. "Mayo Clinic contacted us with the results that we anticipated. I officially have been diagnosed with lymphoma."

I am at a loss for words. Less than six weeks ago another friend of ours (same circle of friends) lost his battle with cancer. Please say an extra prayer for Mrs. g as she is really struggling with this as she is still grieving over the passing of our friend and now this.........:(

Edit - sorry to be a buzkill to all the car/house talk. :)
:( My thoughts are with you and your friends. :(

Yup - there's a section on that in the Freakonomics blog. The day you drive the car off the lot, it depreciates significantly.

I drove one (xB) around Boston quite a bit (around 2006) and really enjoyed it. I even used it to move...granted I had a lot less then.

Hello, Lodge. Just wanted to check in and see how people were doing. Still doing the nanny thing.

Speaking of cars, I just received one as a loaner while I'm up here in NH. Parents have 4 cars for 2 people, so they were nice enough to allow me to use one since I don't have one. 2006 Toyota Camry with the works (was my mom's car until she decided she needed something bigger on the back country roads in the winter). Very nice car with excellent gas mileage - averaging about 30-40mpg (took about half a tank to go from home in PA to home in NH - about 300 miles). Just nice to have some wheels again... :o

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 120: How do you want to die?

Either that or you learned to sleep?
Meh... I was here at my usual time...

Bob: It will take time, but you'll find comfort in knowing that Mom's in a better place and no longer suffering.

Gmann: Prayers for you, your friend, and the families.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 120: How do you want to die?

I thought I'd pass along some of my good news. My friend who was diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma just emailed me to tell me she had her 2-month PET scan and her tumor is gone! She is now done with chemo and will start a course of radiation in a couple of weeks to kill any final traces. I am so relieved and thrilled for her.

gmann - this is why I asked if you knew which type, as the cure rate is quite high with this kind. I hope and pray for your friend to have a similar success. While cancer deserves an F U from all of us, it does sometimes have a positive outcome.

Pictures of Maggie are finally online. :) They can be seen here: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2306984&id=11015670&l=281fd839b9.

Also, if you are friends with me on Facebook, search for photos of me and you can see the pics that The Sun and 'Ewe took as well.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 120: How do you want to die?

So it looks CHA has had his e-mail captured by a spam bot for some on-line pharmacy. Either that, or he thinks I need to know where to buy Cealis. Has he been talking to my wife? :o

As long as he's only talking to her. :p

I also got that spam, and sent CHA a message. Hopefully he'll take care of it!

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 120: How do you want to die?

a car should be nothing more then something to get you from point A to point B.
Not how i look at it. Cars are toys that should be a source of enjoymment when being driven, and being tinkered with. Mess with something, go see if it's faster, go back to the shop, mess with something, see if its faster, repeat. When i finally buy a car, this is what i hope to do with it. As it is now, i'm just driving the truck, which is fun in its own way.

You can live in your car, but you can't drive your house. (Motorhomes are not houses)

I can put gas in the car and change the oil and change a tire. Other than that I am about as useful as a Tech hockey player at a goal scoring contest. :D ;)

Any predictions for the queens game tonight?

Lots of drunk people all over America watching the game. Other than that, Brett throws about 45 times, 2TD, 3INT. Drew throws about 44 times, 3TD, 1 INT. Reggie does the heisman pose after a TD reception for one last time and N'awlins wins 31-24

After much thought and deliberation and without letting my heart make any precictions I think the score will be................

Aints - 3
Super Bowl XLV champs- 119

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 120: How do you want to die?

My prediction is that either Jared Allen or Ray Edwards will actually remove Drew Brees's head from his body. His head will become a travelling trophy after Toby Gerhart steals it and Percy Harvin eats Brees's brains, hoping it will alleviate his migraines. Then BrettFavre will find $5.

34-24 Purple

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 120: How do you want to die?

Is this a big enough game for Favre to throw a nut-crushing interception at the worst possible time? Or, since it's only game 1, will he be ok and win the game for them?

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 120: How do you want to die?

1. Who is the President?
2. Who is the Vice President?
3. Who is the Secretary of State?
4. Who is your congressman?
5. Who are your two senators?
The results are in, and are encouraging. The percentage correct for each question:
1. 100%
2. 94%
3. 71%
4. 98%
5. 69% (though 90% knew one of the two)

Hoping for more truthful responses, I made the quiz anonymous, and I also asked how many hours per week they study. Their average was 22.1 hours.
For reference, the 1961 average for all American college students was 24 hours, and in 2010 it is down to 14 hours.
