Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 115: What sports do you watch in the off-season?

We just got notice of a department-wide meeting today at 4pm. Methinks changes are afoot at the Circle K. Or maybe they're closing the office tomorrow for a 4-day weekend. Hard to know.

And I gave up plans for this weekend as I volunteered to help out at the Esplanade. My department runs the hospitality tent at the event, including VIP seating for the concert and fireworks. I've been able to go the last two years after offering my help to those here that work on the event. I don't need to eat the fancy meal or even sit in the seats. I am perfectly capable standing in the back or off to the side. I was under the impression that helping out at the hospitality tent (signing people in) meant I was working on behalf of that department and they all get to go in. So now when my shift is over at 8pm, I'm on my own and will have to find a place to watch the Pops and the fireworks. Which is all I want to do and now I feel like I won't get to do that given they're expecting record crowds. I'm pretty annoyed, though then I feel guilty about it. I feel ike my 4th of July is now not what it was supposed to be and I could have done other stuff.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 115: What sports do you watch in the off-season?

So, as of today, it is illegal to text message and drive in the State of Michigan. I'm guilty of it myself, and at the same time glad for the ban, but I wish it hadn't been so much of a problem that Michigan had to do nanny state on us. I'd rather see the effort put forth for other driving "offenses", such as habitual DUI's, frequent reckless driving and speeding, and things of that sort.

Cops have enough to be on the lookout for, that they're not going to be sitting along side the road or at an intersection looking for people on their phones.

What this DOES do, is make it a much more punishable offense if you're in an accident, or speeding through a work/school zone. You now get the moving violation AND the cell text/call fine.

The City of Chicago had a cell phone ban when I moved down here, Illinois went state wide this January. It's cut down on their use from what I've seen, but people (including me) still do it. :o

That's one reason I got a Bluetooth with my new phone - Minnesota made it illegal to text while driving (just a secondary offense though) and it wouldn't surprise me if they banned use of a handset while driving, like other states I drive through.

I bet they will to begin with, since it's a primary offense and they'll make a mint nabbing people. Plus, they're stepping up DUI enforcement until the 11th so they can look for texters at the same time.

The rozzers in Saginaw have been known to sit in parking lots with binoculars during the Click It or Ticket campaigns.

(Speaking of rozzers, what is it with NMU people and using the British spellings of words? I know several NMU people that do this.)

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 115: What sports do you watch in the off-season?

I occasionally text at stoplights. I talk on my phone while driving. However, I know that driving is more important and will ignore my call if the road situation calls for more concentration (accident, traffic, merging, etc). I think hands free is stupid and doesn't do anything except give the person an extra hand to use while not paying attention to the road. In fact, I saw one idiot on speaker phone yesterday half driving on the shoulder 'cause she was leaning so far over talking into her phone. argghhh.

I think the better ban would be to ban idiots from driving. We give way too many people liscenses. And how long must we wait before a driving test is not something you just take once? I'll pay more in DMV fees if it ensures people are ocassionally reminded of how to drive.

In Illinois, the State Patrol hide behind the toll booths. :D

(Not sure, I know SCuM does the French-Canadien spellings as do a couple other friends; I haven't seen much use of common British spellings around. Then again, I'm five years removed from campus life.)

Good afternoon Lodge.

Last day of work for me until 7/12.

Nothing major on the agenda except for hanging out with Mrs. g and the little g's at the lake.

To all in the lodge - have a fun and safe 4th of July weekend!

Some insurance companies offer discounts if you take periodic Safe Driver written exams - I got some money shaved off my policy that way.

I can talk, but not dial. If I'm called, I tell the people right then and there I'm driving, make it quick.

I've never tried to text while driving. It would just take all my attention off the road and onto my phone.

Alaska's driver test is like this. You have to take it every time you reapply for your license. It's sneaky hard, too - lots of random trivia like exactly how many feet you are supposed to stay back from a school bus with its flashers on. Mandatory questions about alcohol/drinking and driving as well. You need a 16 out of 20 to pass. I know several people who've failed it, some several times.

I'm going to hold on to my Michigan license, because my engineer ego refuses to believe I can pass the FE exam in one try, but not a driver's test :p

ETA: That was 11000 and I missed it. Yay.

State Farm has a program where you keep a log of your safe driving for 30 days along with a witness, and after you turn it in you get a nice discount.

Hey, maybe you wouldn't have so many problems fitting into the S&SS if you cleared the underbrush. ;)

I have been working out so the s&ss are a little loose and the underbrush keeps them on..............sorta works like velcro................

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 115: What sports do you watch in the off-season?

Double post.

It has been a while since I have provided any updates about the monkey's I work with. The other day I am at a board meeting and for whatever reason the discussion got sidetracked. Discussion centered on the vuvuzela debate at the World Cup. My right hand monkey texted me "I thought vuvuzela was a female body part?" Maybe you had to be there but I had a hard time keeping a straight face.

Yeah, that's the insurance I have, and it wasn't too onerous. Just don't make it up TOO badly. ;)

Perhaps Mrs. G ought to put the s&ss in the washer on hot, shrink them down a bit... on second thought, how about you just wear a belt

Oh holy Christ! BWK learned how to embed audio into a post, and is now using it in the NMU thread...
