Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 114: Who gives a...

Those are for the band that actually pays. This one's for fun. I like metal a whole lot, but there's no money in it. :(

DT (and us, I guess) is considered, by us metal dorks, melodic death metal: slow, deathy/growly vocals, lots of melody, few blast beats if any. Opeth is more prog-like and acoustic at times (hell, I think that homo GLM even likes them) and Cradle is... um... black metal, I suppose.

In Flames, Shadows Fall and Soilwork are also in that "melodic death" subgenre.
I believe you are correct on the GLM liking Opeth.
New music sounds awesome. I'm not wild about the guy's voice, but I think with listening to more of the stuff, I could definitely come around. Made me want to dig out my favorite Dimmu Borgir stuff. I'll have to check out the other melodic death bands.

I've not heard much, but I think you might actually like Opeth.

I can give you some suggestions...
I'll have to hit up GLM for some suggestions.

Cupcakes.
Sadly, my cupcake pans are in Pennsylvania still. :( I might make some popcorn and watch some of the stuff on my DVR.

Just giving you crap about the covers. :p

And from everything I've heard, there's not much money in music in general. Well, not much in playing it. Producing/recording it? That's a different story.
I know, was just saying.

The only money left in music is the labels of the few "artists" who strike big quickly, then die out. Or in cover bands. I guarantee that we often make more money at shows than some of the originals, were they to play again. It's bizarre.

I dunno, Dethklok is probably making money. :D
Meh.

Oh, and I like old metal type bands. Anthrax for instance.
Meh.

Getting rid of Belladonna was the dumbest thing they ever did.
I dunno. "Bring the Noise" sucked something awful. John Bush is an awesome singer, but the band flat out sucked for most of his time there.

In regards to metal, Mr. wore Black has been in several metal band in both Minnesota and a side project here in Wisconsin. He was mostly in Black and Death Metal. His dream project is to be in a Doom Metal band. I prefer my Power Metal status.
I've played in "regular" death metal bands, some more technical, some more melodic, and frankly I like playing the more melodic stuff. I like playing music that's more feel-based.

Black metal can be pretty awesome, but the people that are really into it are... just so ******y and pretentious.

Doom can be fun (I'm a huge fan of Candlemass, Swallow the Sun and Daylight Dies), but it's just brutal to play full time. SO. BORING.

And speaking of power metal, I saw Hammerfall recently. Meh. I really want to see Manowar again though. \m/

Funny that you mentioned those doom metal bands. My husband's bands Enshrined (Black/Death Metal) opened up for Swallow the Sun and Daylight Dies, and Burial at Ornans (Doom Metal) opened for Candlemass on the King of the Gray Island's Tour.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 114: Who gives a...

I will say that one of the things I do love about metal...It's a genre full of nerds.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 114: Who gives a...

I could do without most singing in metal songs. I'm not listening to them for their lyrics or message.

I like war ensemble for example, but it would still be good to me without the singing. Maybe they could keep the chorus if there has to be lyrics.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 114: Who gives a...

They were far more successful with Belladonna.
Yeah, but I think the death of metal in the early 90's had a lot to do with them going all crappy too. Every metal band took a major hit around that time. Except Metallica. And Pantera.

Nice!!! \m/ Is that this band? If so, that sounds awesome! I need check more of that out.

I'm with you for the most part, but War Ensemble just wouldn't be the same without THE SPORT IS WAR! TOTAL WAR! WHEN VICTORY IS A MASSACRE!!!!

I mean come on, that's one of the coolest moments in metal! \m/

That's why I said they could keep the chorus. :D

I concur. I've never been into the growling/screaming style of vocals, but the music is awesome.

Thirded. Though those lyrics Swansong posted are pretty funny.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 114: Who gives a...

This convo has made me want to play Guitar Hero: Metallica. Which happens to have War Ensemble on it. :D

To be fair, I thought the first post-Belladonna album was decent. Their quality really took a nosedive after that, though.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 114: Who gives a...

Oh I just realized the other problem with storms. ABC is going to run weather all night and will probably miss at least the entire first half of the NBA Finals coverage.

and this is still a problem how?? :p

NBA. Boring!!

Boy did it ever. I never thought they were that great to begin with. But then...
