religious. It refers to the branch of Judaism that is more religious than Conservative (middle of the road) or Reform (least religious). One can be Orthodox and either Ashkenazic or Sephardic.so what's Orthodox then?![]()

Is Hasidic considered a branch of Orthodox?

Ralph, In this morning's Denver Post I read an article detailing that certain forms of genetic testing are helping curtail the presence of various birth defects in newborns.
Various people groups and birth defects are cited. One such group is Ashkenazi Jews. That's a term with which I am not familiar. Could you provide some enlightenment? Thanks.

Yes.
Howdy Lodge. Oy, what a day. Meeting after meeting after meeting. Been that way for a few days. No time to do any of the work that comes from the meetings. I didn't get home till 8pm. I need to pack as I'm going to NYC tomorrow morning. Not watching the Olympics tonight. Need to get to bed early. I also have some work to do tonight. Not sure if I can get around to it. I'm exhausted.![]()

Okay people....PLEASE REMEMBER: The mid-term exam in LODGE JUDAISM 101 is this Friday. I repeat this Friday.
do you plan on studying by being nicer to your neighbor? Or turning the other cheek?![]()
Basically, think of Ashkenazi and Sephardic as nationalities (not technically true, but more relatable) and Orthodoxy/Conservative/Reform as different Christian denominations (different readings of the same texts [more or less] and different degrees of fundamentalism).roger that

I read this as baking.Good, you three can do all my running for me.
(I prefer biking, my right knee isn't fond of running)
Interesting tidbit- many French Canadians in their early history were Ashkenazi Jews that converted to Christianity. When you do genetic counseling you have to ask French Canadians if they have certain genetic things running in the family that you would ask for the Ashkenazi Jews.http://www.denverpost.com/search/ci_14412871
That's the link to the cyber-version of the article. It does not contain a chart which the morning paper reflects, and in which, Ashkenazi Jews [among other groups] are mentioned.
The article raised more questions for me than it answered. It stated that when the severest form of cystic fibrosis was detected through testing many prospective parents chose abortion. I don't equate abortion as "eliminating a particular birth defect" so that's one reason I found the headline to the article misleading. I don't know if the article will provide any assistance for you or not.
Ralph seems to have more than a little expertise in the area of Jewish history/culture and I thought he'd be a likely source of enlightenment for me.![]()

Well, yeah--he lived at home until he was thirty, and his mother thought he was God's gift.
Sorry... I had to.
