Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 102: Hockey Sucks!!!

Where were you when you decided to trip over a plastic cup?

Long story short, I was late for school & running to get the ringing phone which was in my mom's room. My 3 year old brother's sippy cup was on the floor, I stepped on it, my leg went in the opposite direction of my foot, and everything got fuzzy.

I was hoping for a drunken injury story.

Can I comment on this -- the genetic testing curtailing birth defects, not the Ashkenazi Jews.

How exactly does genetic testing curtail birth defects? When we were considering the testing we were told that most of the defects that were found with such testing were not correctable. If the article offers different insight, could you send me the link, this relates to something we are dealing with right now. Thanks!

That's the link to the cyber-version of the article. It does not contain a chart which the morning paper reflects, and in which, Ashkenazi Jews [among other groups] are mentioned.

The article raised more questions for me than it answered. It stated that when the severest form of cystic fibrosis was detected through testing many prospective parents chose abortion. I don't equate abortion as "eliminating a particular birth defect" so that's one reason I found the headline to the article misleading. I don't know if the article will provide any assistance for you or not.

Ralph seems to have more than a little expertise in the area of Jewish history/culture and I thought he'd be a likely source of enlightenment for me. :)

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 102: Hockey Sucks!!!

Using the bb gun and Pam were provided to me by the guy who istalled the dish.

I used the bb gun because the dish is on the roof of my house and getting access to it is very difficult and also dangerous during the winter.

My dish is in the "high" corner of my walk out rambler, which is easily 20' of the ground, right on the edge. I use a roof rake with a squeegee taped to the end of it to clean it. Luckily it's not near the power lines.

So my high school class is having a reunion this summer, one with a number that ends in 0. Wonder if I should go.

I'm sure some classmates have grandkids near my son's age.

I have have two peaks to my house and the dish is on the second. Probably 35' or so from the ground and the pitch is very steep. A real pain to get to.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 102: Hockey Sucks!!!

Ralph, In this morning's Denver Post I read an article detailing that certain forms of genetic testing are helping curtail the presence of various birth defects in newborns.

Various people groups and birth defects are cited. One such group is Ashkenazi Jews. That's a term with which I am not familiar. Could you provide some enlightenment? Thanks.

Ashkenazic Jews are Jews who originally came from Germany and the term includes those from eastern Europe (Poland, Lithuamia, Russia, etc.) who by and large lived in the German Rhineland in the middle ages. It is distinguished from Sephardic Jews who are the ones driven out of Spain and Portugal around the time of Columbus. Most of the Jews in the US are Ashkenazic.

I would but standing on my steep roof while wearing a skirt with no underwear gets a little cold.......................

And without a doubt a sight no one wants to see

Thanks! Your second paragraph is what I was afraid the article was going to hold. I agree with you on your assessment that we are not eliminating a particular birth defect by preventing birth of fetuses with that defect. (which is why I probably will not get any of these tests when the time comes)

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 102: Hockey Sucks!!!

After spraining one of my ankles last year (by tripping over a plastic cup ), I can't run whatsoever.

get back on the horse.

so what's Orthodox then?
