Many people believe exactly what joe is saying. It put the wind up Kierkegaard so much it made him reject human reason. My Dad, by no means a man without intellectual resources, thought that life without a God would be a directionless waste of time for precisely the same reasons I feel that life without a God is the only possible demonstration of goodness and love.

It doesn't count if you're only doing it because somebody is watching you.

We invented God for joe. It keeps him behaving, so, good. For those who lack moral resources within by all means let's have a backstop to keep them from running a-muck.

I thought it was our other resident 'you have to be a believer and only Christians are good' person. I had to look twice.

Truth is, I believe my actions will speak louder than anything I say.

We have a poster who has said that only believers can be moral. Also, Christians invented ethics which would come as a surprise to Aristotle and the entire East.

It's okay, he is insane.

When the Episcopalians found me, they introduced me to a God who wasn't going to kill me. ****, for the longest time, instead of political nonsense and being excluded for lack of income growing up, I just wanted to hear about a God who loved me and wanted the best for me.

I got that with the Episcopalians.

That's kind of a low bar for a god. Even the Christian god where we have to make a lot of allowances.

Guess it could be worse, though. Allah hasn't gotten there yet.

Gods take a long time to grow up.

Remember, the first God I met was Right Wing Jesus. And he has it out for transgender humans. The Episcopalians introduced me to a God that loves us and wants the best for us. Right Wing Jesus did not.

A coworker of mine just stopped me dead. She's very working class Catholic ("the Bible says it, I believe that, that settles it") and she's amused/perturbed that I'm an atheist so we kid each other sort of about religion. We were talking about bunnies and eggs and how they came to be associated with Easter. I told her I'd give that to the Christians because bunnies came from the folk myth that rabbits could reproduce by parthenogenesis (hence, Virgin Birth) and eggs come from an explicit adoption by the Christian to signify the Resurrection. And that's when she said, "well, I know we get the rainbow." I said, I'm not sure about that -- rainbows are pretty much universal in cultures so I'm sure ancient peoples had the rainbow long before Christianity. And she said, "no, the rainbow comes as God's message that he won't destroy the earth again after Noah."

I know this woman. That isn't humor. Noah is literal history to her. I've never met a Biblical literalist Catholic before. This woman truly has the Olde Tyme Religion.

Every June, us LGBT come together to celebrate our greatest accomplishments, like stealing the rainbow from God.

This might be the closest thing to an accurate depiction you’ve posted on the origin of religions (including your beloved Christianity). I heard a podcast recently (can’t remember exactly which one, unfortunately) where an anthropologist was saying that throughout human history, you see demi-religions begin to emerge when tribe sizes started to exceed 50-100 people. When the tribes were small, everyone knew everybody, so they could always hold each other accountable. Once your tribe gets too big, nobody can be watching everyone, so the society has to invent an entity who CAN. Voila! Omniscient gods, at your service, to keep the hoi pilloi in line. Religion is just the enforcement arm of those already in power.

Religion is all about power, money, and controlling the mostly average-to-dumb masses. The only different between a religion and a cult, is the amount of real estate they own.

Yes, religion was made to tell poor folk their rewards would come after death and therefore no reason to steal from the wealthy. Wealthy went to church just in case it was true ;)
