Re: Religion Thread: We Could Say a Prayer

Today, in Finding Delicate Flowers Everywhere:

On my way home from Grand Rapids today, I was behind an SUV with a bumper sticker that read "Taking Back The Rainbow" with the Ark Encounter underneath. Of course, she had a Trump 2020 sticker on her car, too.

I have a hunch she also complains there's no Straight Pride month.

Ain't enough popcorn in the world for this show that's coming ...

Well, this is the Church that has cherry picked which science they wanted to believe and which was inconvenient since its inception. Nothing new here. It is inconvenient that they have to deal with genetic science showing gender frequently being non-binary so they will ignore it. Little minds can only handle so much.

Didn't they arrest Galileo for his theory that the earth and planets revolved around the sun? Yeah... the church has never been much for science.

The Church knew about the heliocentric model for a long time - they funded both Copernicus (who originally hypothesized it) and Galileo. They arrested Galileo because he publicized it/championed it, and directly criticized the Church and Pope Urban VIII for continuing to push the geocentric model (the key reason for his prosecution being the latter).

I don't have anything like that kind of money!

So, I'm a grad student. My pastor drives an older Subaru. My best friend at church basically was a shift supervisor at Starbucks, and now works at the library part time.

Re: Religion Thread: We Could Say a Prayer

This poster is quite interesting. I haven't had the opportunity to read this series yet (it's one of a 9-part series of diaries) but I thought I'd throw it here for reference.

Re: Religion Thread: We Could Say a Prayer

Re reading Dune. Came across the following quote, which perfectly describes our bishops, especially the Cardinal Archbishops of Chicago, NY and DC.

You cannot avoid the interplay of politics within an orthodox religion. This power struggle permeates the training, educating and disciplining of the orthodox community. Because of this pressure, the leaders of such a community inevitably must face that ultimate internal question: to succumb to complete opportunism as the price of maintaining their rule, or risk sacrificing themselves for the sake of the orthodox ethic.

—FROM “MUAD’DIB: THE RELIGIOUS ISSUES” BY THE PRINCESS IRULAN

Re: Religion Thread: We Could Say a Prayer

Because toeing an arbitrary ideological line itself driven by politics isn't opportunistic at all.

The blindness of the fanatic is exceeded only by his ability to delude himself in thinking what he is doing is principled and not an act of autobiographical self-aggrandizement.

Only one guy gets to die on the cross, buddy. The rest are just posing. You should read Etienne Gilson. Thomist, genius, subtle wit, thoroughly orthodox and conservative in his faith and teaching. And a straight edge razor for the vanity of the self-absorbed reactionary who believes "You need me on that wall!"

Re: Religion Thread: We Could Say a Prayer

The North Carolina Methodist Church has been dealing with a rise in sexism within its congregations. So they took recent comments that their female pastors (who were first allowed to preach by the Methodists in 1956) have received by their congregations, and made their unsuspecting male pastors read the abuse they take.

Out loud.

On camera.

This isn't just a Methodist issue. This is happening across all religions. This is tough to listen through, men (and women) of grace belittling their pastors in the perverted name of God.

Yikes. I really respect those pastors though. Up to the congregations for rooting it out from within. I wish them luck.
