The Indiana professor thing is interesting. I have to say, the university handled it right

Re: Religion: Catholics, Episcopalians, Atheists, All Are Welcome!

Tonight I learned that Holland has an Openly Secular Alliance, meant for atheists, agnostics, humanists, and religious allies, or H.O.S.A. for short.

Here in conservative West Michigan, this place needs it. Here in Holland, can't throw a rock without hitting a church, and when I came down here, I was terrified.

If west Michigan unsettles you, don't go to the Carolinas.

Allow me to describe a drive down any major thoroughfare down there: strip club, church, strip club, church, strip club, church, Waffle House (repeat ad nauseam, ad infinitum)

Throw in a pawn shop and bail bonds and you have red Murika. Nuthin' but class.

It was better once I walked into Out On the Lakeshore around Thanksgiving 2017. There I met Episcopalians, and I started going to church at Grace on 12/31/2017. My pastor gives me the best hugs and serves me fat chunks of bread for Communion.

There's a story I'm following locally:

Lesbian with a wife has been attending East Grand Rapids parish for years, but a priest recently denied her Communion. The Diocese stands with the priest, while the parishioners are like "why did you do that?"

My thoughts are basically if the priest is denying you communion, lady... get the hell out of there and go where you are wanted.

Is it a Catholic parish? If so, that doesn't surprise me in the least. The priests and bishops have been trending more conservative for a while now, their thought being that the liberal parishes are losing the kids because they offer nothing compared to the more bombastic Protestant sects.

I happen to think that the liberal parishes are losing more kids because they come from families who allow their children the freedom to survey the landscape and realize they've been shoveled crap for the whole of their lives up to that point, but maybe that's just me.

Re: Religion: Catholics, Episcopalians, Atheists, All Are Welcome!

Catholic clergy are in a hard spot. Even if they want to liberalize, all the cross winds are reactionary. The center of gravity of the world church is being dragged into fundie insanity by African clerics. Tolerant intellectuals who would have been a counterweight to the Benedict XVI-installed regime left the church in disgust leaving a huge demographic hole in the Vatican. And the ground troops aren't exactly the best and brightest. Taken for all that, the occasional sane and intelligent priest is fighting against almost insuperable odds.

There are those of us who do good things. My church is actively involved in the local community, and my pastor has chipped in Meijer gift cards while I'm recovering, for example.

But there are times I wonder if I do good because of, or in spite of my faith.
