Quinnipiac @ RPI, Saturday, November 15th

fr. joe

Retired Goalie
Quinnipiac comes a bobbin' and a weavin' into Troy after beating Union, 4-3. Quinny, a dangerous team who has had their way with us over the last few years, beat Union while scoring last-minute goals in the first and third periods. Three of their goals came on the power play. Ouch.

But for one night, let's follow our process, skate our game and... GO, RED, GO!

Re: Quinnipiac @ RPI, Saturday, November 15th

Worried about how are defense plays tonight and of course about how we defend the penalties we are certain to be called for. We have the speed up front to create chances and i am sure we will get some good looks at the goal. If we convert a few of those chances, this could be quite a high scoring game. Our defense will just have to be able to clear the puck out of our zone by making quick smart decisions. Cannot afford to delay with the puck and give QU the chance to get their forecheck deep into our zone. Nice to start out 4-1 in the league, but evening our overall record to 6-6 tonight would be really great.

Any link to watch this one for free? Is RPI tv is doing free broadcasts?

Doc if you weren't worried about something, I would be worried about you.
This will be a difficult game against a good team, but we have been pretty good about keeping the puck out of our net. If we continue to do that, we will be competitive against everybody.
In the past, we have started games against good teams a bit sluggish. I would suggest starting the MNM line to take care of that. They come out with energy from the start and may get the rest of the team going. JMO

Energy and using our speed will be important against a very good opponent like Q. Heard Pecknold's interview last night on Union thread... 'power play has carried us this season.' This will be a very challenging game. But this season has already had its share of challenging games. Looking for a big game tonight...

Re: Quinnipiac @ RPI, Saturday, November 15th

For tonight.....shoot, shoot again, shoot some more, shoot more than you pass. Q goalie, Garteig, has a save % under .900.

We have been saying that for years. last week I watched the women play, and it seemed like they would shoot without passing a lot first, but they always shot into a defender.

Great to see-no other changes. QU presents a totally different kind of team than we saw last night. Job number 1 is to get the puck quickly out of our end. If we delay at all, they will be in on top of us. But that could be something to take advantage of, if we can get past the first wave quickly and get the puck out to one of our two fastest lines, we could get some odd man rush situations. Very anxious to see KG in the line up tonight.

If you have watched the games carefully, some of our defensemen seem to take too long to move the puck out. They are a tad slow at deciding what to do and by doing so, they allow the forecheck to get in on them and we end up playing a control game against the boards deep in our own zone. One of the strong points of Curadi's game and Bradley's game is their ability to just move the puck before forwards can get in close to them. Bokenfohr so far this year has shown some of what i call the LeBeouf/Dolan syndrome. Getting to the puck but then taking that microsecond of an extra delay deciding what to do next. That might be OK in the lower leagues but at the Division I level, defensemen just have to react that much quicker. i still feel his upside far outweighs this downside, but it has cost us already this year and needs some work. QU is a far more aggressive group of forwards than PU and we will need to get the puck moving out of the zone just that little bit faster tonight. Otherwise, Sam Anas along with others, will make us pay dearly. Also, the QU power play is much more of a threat than what we saw last night. Hopefully we can do what is necessary when short handed(and you just know the officials will see to it that we get called for our usual share of offenses) to have QU waste some of the time trying to bring the puck up. Mcgowan, Melanson, Nanne, et al will have to make themselves a total nuisance forechecking just enough to shorten those 2 minute power plays by making QU cycle back and use up some time.

Re: Quinnipiac @ RPI, Saturday, November 15th

Doc, I have noticed the defensemen hesitating on the first pass out of the zone, but I think it has more to do with communication. Someone should be talking to them letting them know where the outlet is. Prapavessis is as quick as they come in the offensive zone, but he too is a bit slow coming out of the defensive zone. I think we can fix this with a little communication and support.

EHF-It is only slightly about the first pass. The puck gets shot in, some of our defensemen go for it, reach it by the boards, and then, instead of quickly moving it out, they look around for what seems like a bit too long and end up trying to freeze it against the boards against 2 forecheckers. It is not a major failing-but it is something lots of young defensemen do trying to be a bit too wary of making an errant pass. I am a firm believer that offense is easy to learn but defense takes more time. I fully expect freshmen forwards to work into the system quickly and get a bit upset when they don't. But i am of the opinion that defense takes time to learn. The speed of the NCAA game is such that any young defenseman can be exposed rather quickly-i agree with those coaches who like to introduce their defensemen into the system slowly-pairing them with older more mature guys. I really think our defense is one of our strong points, but I have noticed the difficulty that some of our guys have with the faster speed of NCAA forwards as opposed to the level they just came from. This is one aspect that can be worked on and practiced. But it is extremely important. it is one of the fundamentals that we need to make automatic, just like taking faceoffs. The parity of the ECAC makes it imperative that we give nothing away and take nothing for granted. we have superb goaltending, solid defense(with a few things needing work) and more speed than I have seen on our team in a long time. If we can finish some of these plays we create, we are going to be a much tougher team to play than most predicted. I am very excited to see how Kenny G fits in. You can never be too deep in power forwards. Truly hoping everyone recovers fast so we can be at full strength for the upcoming road trips.
