Quinnipiac @ RPI, Saturday, November 15th

Re: Quinnipiac @ RPI, Saturday, November 15th

Looking forward to an entertaining game tonight. Wonder what the story is about illness of some players...(I have heard that several NHL teams are battling an outbreak of mumps, which as I understand it can be quite serious for adults).

BTW, at Hobey Baker the women are trailing the Tigers 1-0 after 2 periods. Lots of hard work, as usual, on the part of the women, but really only one player with the skating and puck skills to be an offensive threat on each shift.

With Neal, Curadi, and Bradley out, the only other person, other than goalies, who could have played is Bell.

Nice to see that we can still win despite missing all those players. That kind of depth could come in handy later on in the season.
Looking forward to seeing Kenny G play tonight. Let's hope for a great effort from the boys. Let's go RED!!!

Re: Quinnipiac @ RPI, Saturday, November 15th

EHF-It is only slightly about the first pass. The puck gets shot in, some of our defensemen go for it, reach it by the boards, and then, instead of quickly moving it out, they look around for what seems like a bit too long and end up trying to freeze it against the boards against 2 forecheckers. It is not a major failing-but it is something lots of young defensemen do trying to be a bit too wary of making an errant pass. I am a firm believer that offense is easy to learn but defense takes more time. I fully expect freshmen forwards to work into the system quickly and get a bit upset when they don't. But i am of the opinion that defense takes time to learn. The speed of the NCAA game is such that any young defenseman can be exposed rather quickly-i agree with those coaches who like to introduce their defensemen into the system slowly-pairing them with older more mature guys. I really think our defense is one of our strong points, but I have noticed the difficulty that some of our guys have with the faster speed of NCAA forwards as opposed to the level they just came from. This is one aspect that can be worked on and practiced. But it is extremely important. it is one of the fundamentals that we need to make automatic, just like taking faceoffs. The parity of the ECAC makes it imperative that we give nothing away and take nothing for granted. we have superb goaltending, solid defense(with a few things needing work) and more speed than I have seen on our team in a long time. If we can finish some of these plays we create, we are going to be a much tougher team to play than most predicted. I am very excited to see how Kenny G fits in. You can never be too deep in power forwards. Truly hoping everyone recovers fast so we can be at full strength for the upcoming road trips.

Doc, as usual, we are on the same page. When I said first pass, I didn't mean the first pass out of the zone. I meant the first pass to the outlet man. So that they don't have to hesitate. That takes communication and support from team mates. We'll get it right soon enough.

RPI women lose 2-1 in OT at Princeton. Definitely a game they could have won. Best player on the ice, by far, was Gruschow. Also a strong performance in net from O'Brien.

Beyond serious in adults. Fairly high incidence of very painful inflammation of gonadal tissue and fairly high incidence of sterility developing. Have to blame this sort of thing, as well as the resurgence of whooping cough, on all those who profess avoiding immunizations. Although there are always risks of some immunizations, you have to weigh the risks and sequellae of the diseases. I am a very conservative physician and there are indeed some shots and medications i would advise against, but I do not think any adult wants to suffer some of these childhood diseases at an advanced age. Generations of not having to deal with measles, mumps, German measles, chickenpox, bordatella, etc have led to a complacency as many do not realize how devastating these things were in the past and could be again.

I must admit I thought this team would be fine defensively and in goal. Before the season started i felt we were just going to be an impotent offense struggling to score in every game. I saw the potential in the freshmen but also realized that coach Appert is not a big believer in much ice time for the freshmen and brings them along rather slowly. I have been incredibly pleasantly surprised. i knew from years of watching Delbarton that Melanson was lightning fast and would help open up the ice but had no clue how much other speed was in this class. I have to give a lot of credit to our coach who saw immediately the potential of the MNM line. We seem to have much more talent than it looked like on paper a few months ago and his handling of matching up players together has given me some renewed confidence that this season could have a good deal of success. My biggest concern is no longer our ability to create some offense but our ability to stay healthy on defense. We need that experience on the backline that has now been out injured.

Good to see that Gruschow was playing.
