Quinnipiac Bobcats 2023-24 Regular Season - Embrace the grind

Does anyone have an explanation of what an OT loss has on PAIRWISE vs a regulation loss?
Gotta be some value in a regulation tie and then going to a backyard pond hockey 3 on 3 for the outcome. First PW came out….sitting at #9. Holy Cross at #11.

For the pairwise rankings OT win counts as 2/3rds of a win and 1/3rd of a loss. Vice-versa for the losing team.

Are you sure about this? I thought it was .55/.45 now.

Hopefully the 3x3/shootout experiment is almost over.

Weird season so far but not unexpected. Youngest team we have had in a while. We played 2 tough teams that were better than expected. I expected them to be tough after our trip to Orono last year and read UNH had potential. Looking forward to conference play this weekend. First with our old friend Reid and then on to Harvard. Looking forward to watching this team get better as the season goes on.

Young team and a national championship hangover. Agree that they'll get better as the year goes on. We already have as many losses this year as we had the entire regular-season last year. Just goes to show you how incredible last season was.

My take on the weekend is that this team has gelled and turned the corner. They were all over Brown and Yale. Passing was crisp and on target. Great defensive play. Solid goaltending. Two very fun games to watch.

I especially liked the play of Cooper Moore and Davis Pennington. They seem to have embraced the systems (as have all the transfers) and it shows. As good as our first line is with Graf back, the 2nd line was awesome and the 3rd & 4th lines played their roles to perfection.

Friday's Cornell game will be a huge test with huge implications on the rest of the season. It does look like it will be a 2 horse ECAC race.

Good analysis Mark. I think Graf is the key to everything. We are simply not the same team without him. He is on a torrid pace, for the games he’s played (2 of which he didn’t get out of the 2nd period). Defense seems to have settled and now we just need consistent above average goaltending and we should be in good shape the rest of the way. 2 of the biggest games of the year, lie in the next week and a half. Let’s see where we are after that. Our SOS is #1 in the country thus far, so thank you UNH and Maine for not being bad. What could’ve been if Graf played all of the BC game…

I like this squad. Still a lot more building to do but Rand seems to have them going the right way, per usual.

Go Bobcats

Big 2 games this weekend. Cornell will be a good test as always to see the growth of this team. I agree with BigAl that Graf is the key and that all the young players/transfers seem to be buying into the culture. It seems the team is playing D more like we are used to and maintaining possession on offense. That could have been related to the level of the teams we played so this weekend should be more challenging. Would like to get a little revenge against Colgate so I think Rand will have the boys ready. G is still a concern with 35 a little shaky at times.

Huge win right there. That was the biggest game of the conference season, and we came through it with flying colors.

Rumors of the Bobcats' demise were greatly exaggerated.

Was a good test. Three ugly turnovers resulting in 3 Cornell goals was not typical but they found a way to overcome.

Chasing Shane after the first 10 minutes, and an effective power play were key points in the game. They responded to each Cornell goal as well which was actually fun to watch. It was just as much fun watching the Big Red fans have hope only to have it snatched away.

A very good effort but far from our best. They need to clean up a few things but are certainly headed in the right direction.

No let down tonight. I'm sure the Colgate games are highlighted on their calendar since they were a thorn in our side last year.

Secondary Scoring is key as well. Great to see Graf and Quillian on the score sheet but also great to see lines 2-4 contributing. The pass from Moore to Quillian was sick. Tape to tape 130 feet away. Lee’s goal was equally impressive. Goalie had no chance. Completely undressed him. D made a few boneheaded plays. We’ve been spoiled in the past with elite goaltending, Defense and disciplined play with few penalties . It’s nice these guys are lighting the lamp as the rest of the pieces come together. Hopefully a little tighter tonight and on Wednesday as BU will be ready to welcome the Champs.

Great offensive weekend, Graf, Lee and Marcellus all had massive weekends. I really liked what I saw from Cooper Moore too. The Christophe’s had a good weekend too. This PP, when everyone is healthy, is the best I can remember for us. I believe they are 11 of 27 with Graf in the lineup. Mason Marcellus is the yearly example of our coaching staff recruiting their butts off. There is one guy every class that comes on incredibly strong that is not highly touted (I’m talking NHL Draft touted). It’s been almost every year since the Jones’. A true joy to see happen and an easy way to recruit the next one.

We should all be considerably worried about goaltending. I didn’t feel great about it going into the year, knowing BU let Duplessis walk to take the Brown goaltender. Marinov probably needs a year of getting settled before he becomes the guy going forward, but this may be the weakest goaltending we’ve had since 2011. Obviously we’ve had an outrageous stretch of goalies, but the last time we gave up 4 goals back to back was in the 2022 NCAA Tournament against St Cloud and Michigan. If we can figure out the goaltending a bit, this team can compete to be in Minneapolis.

Duplessis got hung out to dry with turnovers on 3 of the 4 goals Friday night. Last night, 3 of the 4 were wicked tips/deflections that he could do nothing about. I don't think he's the problem. Marinov had one bad start and probably does need more time to settle in. The truth is that the D in front hasn't been what we're used to, but they do seem to be improving with each game. I don't think there's anything to be considerably worried about, at least not yet.

Remember that the 2022 Tourney was Perets and St Cyr. Even great goalies have bad games. As long as the offense is finding ways to score I'm not worried about giving up 3 or 4 goals.

We HAVE been spoiled and everyone seems to think this team should be able to do what last seasons did. Ain't gonna happen. That was a magical team that was carried on the shoulders of the 5 fifth years and I don't think that will ever be seen again. This is a different team with a different dynamic. I think this weekend showed their resolve. They found a way when pushed back and they will continue to evolve and improve.

Everyone seems to put out overall success on Graf's shoulders. He's a great talent and we are better with him than without but we need to be able to play without him. Next man up and all that. No team can survive being built around one player. Secondary and tertiary scoring is a must to survive in D-I, even with a player like Graf on the ice. That seems to be happening and must continue for this team to be successful.

I think we're fine where we are as long as the injury bug doesnt bite. Havent heard anything on Lee (who's been absolutely on fire) and we're not very deep at D. On the other side Treloar is still out and will be a big help when he returns.
