Quinnipiac Bobcats 2023-24 Regular Season - Embrace the grind

A cheap shot is skating into someone? Call a penalty if warranted, maybe interference but that certainly looks like an accidental collision.

it’s reckless and definitely a penalty. YoYou’re responsible for controlling your stick and you’re responsible for slowing down on your skates AFTER the whistle. The BC player flew in OUT OF CONTROL and caused a serious injury.

The hit on Graf has to be something. At the very least, it's 2 for interference. And if I see more angles, I could be talked into a 5/game for kneeing. As you said, you're responsible for your stick on accidental high-sticking, you're responsible for your body on a play like that. It probably was accidental, but it's still a penalty.

The Lipkin play is a stone-cold slewfoot. Dangerous and dirty. I wouldn't be surprised if Lipkin got suspended a game or two.

There is no serious injury. Penalty sure. Never a major/ejection.

I watched the Graf hit several times today. If you watch closely, his feet get taken out from under him causing him to pinwheel to the ice where it looks like his head impacts the ice full force. The hit is not high or even above the waist, the BC guy takes out his legs. What you don't see is Graf being administered to in the tunnel, going through the concussion protocol. We saw it clearly from our vantage point.

Because it was from the side I guess you can't technically call it a slew foot, but it was certainly interference as the puck is no where near either skater.

The ref is right in the corner watching Graf skate towards him. If he calls a minor I'm sure Pecknold asks for a review and likely gets a major.

Based on where the hit occurred, where the puck was at the time of impact, and knowing where the cameras are, there probably wasn't another angle available (God knows it would be out there if it was).

I'll chalk it up to an unfortunate non-call (nothing new for ECAC officials). Word is Graf is ok and will be back in the lineup Friday.

As for Lipkin, after watching it a few times it was legit (but again no call on the ice at the time it happened).

It's done, it's over, time to move on. Lots of time left to make up any lost ground.

The ref doesn't have to call a minor for you to be able to challenge for a major

Right, but a review can not turn a non-penalty into a minor. It can only be for a major penalty. If Rand didn't think the call would be changed to a major, then there's nothing he can challenge.

Well that was my point all along. That it was never going to be deemed a major. But a minor for interference? Yes they could have called that in real time and I wouldn't have a complaint.

I agree with that. On the angle we got, I don't think it was a slewfoot or a kneeing, so I think 2 for interference is probably fair.

Looking forward to this weekend and a regular series. This is a team that should get better as the season goes on so it may be a journey early on. Was primarily watching the goalies last weekend and think we should be good. May be some growing pains but need to see the top lines score some goals to take the pressure off the defense.

Thoughts???
Looks like a cheap shot on Graf and a BS call on Lipkin

The second play is an easy call. Lipken not only took out the defender's leg, but he even lifted his slightly as he did it. That's practically a textbook slewfoot.

The first one is more problematic. Although I'm no expert I concluded that the BC player should have been called for interference and probably even added the with extreme force (not the right language but there's a provision in the rules for an extremely violent act of interference) misconduct.

However, an argument could be made that they both committed interference as each moved into the path of the other. I picked BC because he was looking forward and with minimal peripheral vision should have seen Graf. The reason I called it problematic is that Graf was gliding lazily alone above the crease toward his right wing position with the defenseman behind the net. An important job of any forward in that position (not sure where the center was from that clip) should have been to look around for players coming in from the blue line so he should actually have seen the BC forward and at least made sure the he couldn't cut to the net. My impression of Pecknold is that he's a fanatic about requiring two-way play. After he was sure that Graf was OK I'll bet he asked him, "What were you doing?"

P.S. Someone mentioned "after the whistle" and while that didn't seem to be the case from the actions of the players, if the whistle had blown then I take back the questions regarding Graf's move.

Well so much for Graf being in the lineup Friday. I hope he’s back by next weekend. If he’s not…..it’s a major injury and we can only speculate.

Fun to see the potential of the offense with everyone in there. PP looks like it will be a major strength. Graf and Lipkin were outstanding (Quillan great too). Congrats to Marinov on his debut and shutout. The goalie train of 10 years looks like it will keep chugging.

Good to see some resolve last night from the boys to come out with the win. The difference between Graf out there and not makes you want the BC game back…Wowzer.

The defense looks to be top notch this year despite some key losses off the blue line from last season. The new blood looks to be assimilating nicely. If Marinov is the real deal and the team stays healthy this could be another special year.

The team certainly was ready for last night. The lines gelled quickly (and having Graf back certainly didn't hurt). Marinov was stellar. Calm, cool, and collective all night. He didn't get rattled and was always in the right place at the right time. The defense has a different look this year but I think it will be one of our strengths as Rand preaches defense.

While the top line contributing 13 pts was fun to watch, we will definitely need to develop secondary scoring as the Graf-Quillan-Lipkin secret won't last long. Treolar and Marcellus look legit and I've been impressed with Tupker. It will be interesting to see who of the returners elevate their games.

Tough test this coming weekend at UNH on the big sheet as the Wildcats took down a strong BU team on Friday.

So any discussion about the ELEPHANT in the room?!!! Was that goalie interference or not???
it’s pretty simple…..we go as far as Graf is healthy……PERIOD

I thought it pretty clearly was interference, but maybe not enough to overturn the call on the ice.

Graf getting injured again is a reminder of how everything went right last year. We were incredibly talented, but also had very few injuries along the way. It's not going to be that easy this year, nor should it be. This team will get better as we go.

I was at both games and thought it was GI. No way we get that call with Hockey East officials though (especially after the win on Friday night). My bigger concern is goaltending and Graf. During the warm ups on Saturday, Marinov was letting in way too many goals. I had a bad feeling about it but then thought of Perets giving up a bad early goal against UND 2 years ago (he recovered). Never thought he would give up 3 goals in 4 shots. I do have to say the lighting in their building seemed a little dark but the rest of the goalies didn't have any issues.

In regards to Graf, when he plays a full game, we win. We definitely need the 3rd line to start putting some points on the board. Since he is in a walking boot/crutches, I have to assume if Graf is back this season it would not be until the 2nd half of the season. I expected this team to get better as the season goes on and like what I see from a lot of the new faces (Marcellus, Cerbone, Treloar, Moore, Pennington, etc). Need to clean up the defense (especially early in games).

On to next weekend. Another tough HE team that is probably better than pre-season rankings as well.
