Quinnipiac Bobcats 2021-22 - Let's get this party started!

How about bringing in recruits and developing them like every other program has done for the past eight decades? Quinnipiac currently has 20 committed players and you’re chomping at the bit for more transfers?

LOL, we got those too. But for what our ambitions are next year, a freshman isn’t what we need immediately. Keep bringing up the same sticking point…we get it you’d rather host a 1 round series in the ECAC playoffs then have a shot at the Frozen Four. We wish you well on your ambitions.

I've never hear Pecknold make negative comments about his opposition. I have, however, wondered what the Ivies thought about the Quinnipiac program. Any doubts, however, went away when Dartmouth hired Cashman. If you don't like how another program is run you don't hire a top assistant from that school as your head coach. The progress QU has made as an academic institution since we moved here 28 years ago also helps. My early impressions were that it was a cute little mid-level liberal arts and business college in the shadows of Sleeping Giant that was a nice safety for CT students. I don't think anyone would call it that now.

Side comment #1: While I like Pecknold, I can't say the same for Riga. I was happy when he didn't get the RPI job as I do remember him making negative comments about our team on the post-game. He probably assumed that only QU fans were listening to the Bobcats radio broadcast, but I found his comments (on the order of "we can't play down to the level of teams like this that we should beat easily") arrogant and unbecoming. I wasn't crushed to see him bringing up the Atlantic Hockey rear at CotHC.

Side comment #2: QU needs a gondola connecting the Hamden campuses. It would be legendary.

You are mistaking competitiveness for a perceived lack of class.

And if you don't think Rand is classy, you obviously haven't met him. I have. The guy exudes class. Sure he gets competitive during games and gets on the officials, and maybe he does more of that than other coaches in D-1, but the guy is really very classy despite that.

Pecknold does have a problem with not giving other teams credit when they beat QU and often throws his own team under the bus during those comments. He comes across as petulant in the press and that is how many other teams fans perceive him. Maybe it is because most of his high profile press conferences have been after high profile losses.

Maybe sometimes, but I think he often compliments other teams for being well coached and has often called goalies from other teams the “best player on the ice tonight”. As unrealistic as it sounds, he feels if his team “buys in” & “plays to their identity” they should win every game. I think his team believes they can as well.

I don’t think there was a game this year they couldn’t have won. Most if not all of the losses were a goal or a bounce away from a QU win. Even the UM game could have ended differently.

I'm sorry, but this is a wild response. "For what our ambitions are next year, a freshman isn't what we need immediately"? When is a freshman ever "what [a team] needs immediately"? This isn't professional sports where teams trade away young talent when they're in "win-now mode." The whole model of college sports is inexperienced freshmen matriculating and developing over their four years. A freshman is rarely going to be an impact player right away, but every coach, every season, has their recruits matriculate and then tries to mold successful players and successful teams. The fact you'd rather your coach poach yet another guy from the transfer portal than bring in one of the 20 recruits in the pipeline indicates to me that you've been rooting for Rand for so long that you've lost touch with how college sports work. What's your plan, exactly?Call every halfway-decent player in the portal and then, only once you've finally struck out, resort to the sad reality of having to bring in a (gasp!) freshman!?!?

Cornell was ranked #1 in the country and well on its way to a great shot at the Frozen Four in 2020, which was its fourth straight year of making the NCAAs, before COVID cancellations nuked the roster. Last year, Quinnipiac, which was putting on the ice a team full of four- and five-year players, was obviously going to be considerably better than a Cornell team whose average player had one year of college experience. That doesn't mean Cornell, which has been the most successful ECAC team in the history of the conference, has ambitions any less than those of Quinnipiac's. What separates Cornell and Quinnipiac hockey more than anything is not the programs' ambitions but rather the unrivaled roster turnover we see year-in and year-out at Quinnipiac. I hope the Qunnipiac recruits know what they've gotten themselves into.
