Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 2016-17 - It's 873 miles to Chicago...

The north country is always a tough road trip. Maybe the off weekend helped us get guys healthy and the extra practice was used to clean up some of the problem areas. Going to need good, solid play all weekend in order to come home with any points. Will be a good test for the boys.

Go Q!

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 2016-17 - It's 873 miles to Chicago...

A very good effort tonight... not perfect but better than they've been. Power play looked a little better than it's been and 2 PPG's were nice to see. Interested to see what changes, kf any, Rand makes for tomorrow night.

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 2016-17 - It's 873 miles to Chicago...

Very good blog summary and if you're interested I can give you some updates. Hayton was indeed off to an unusually slow start having been pulled twice (against UML and PC.) However, he sat last Friday's game and bounced back huge in a 2-2 tie with Minnesota at home last weekend. We were up 2-0 with under 2 minutes to play and unfortunately Minny came back with a huge rally to score two extra attacker goals to tie it. Tonight Hayton shut out Princeton and was very sharp and needed to be as we were out shot badly in the second period. Tonight was his 9th shut out which tied him for first all time at SLU with a full year and 2/3's left in his career. He tied Bill Sloan's record which has stood for 60 years.
Gavin Bayteuther scored his 31st career goal which tied him with All American Brian McColgan...a record that stood for 28 years. However......Brian did it in the time period when freshman didn't play so maybe a Roger Maris asterisk?????
We are dinged up. Sweetman is recovering/playing with a broken hand. Two of the guys you mentioned in your summary who are two of our top forwards have not played for what I think is 2-4 games and those players are Marnell and Laidley. That gives us some patchwork lines and those are two speedy and talented forwards with the puck that we are missing.

We played what I would call a fairly sloppy game tonight against Princeton. A couple of bad line changes that led to partial breakaways and unfortunately as usual quite a few penalties were called both ways on the very ticky tackiest of calls.

Lastly we have a free feed and you will have a real treat. Joe Marsh is doing the color. With our stream a unique feature/problem is that the announcers are being broadcast on the radio.....and you are watching the game stream. Even though the stream stays on......the announcers stop broadcasting during the radio commercial breaks and during the intermission. However....their mics are live and they chit chat and you are liable to hear anything. Between periods tonight we heard about dogs, a police report from Lynnfield MA about a chicken sighted outside a liquor store and even a rogue game of canasta!

In my opinion we are not playing real well. However.....our schedule so far has been hellishly difficult. At UML/PC, Merrimack/UNH at home, two away at Penn State)/ then last weekend Wisconsin/Minnesota.
We seem to be back to last year's formula of getting outshot by a wide margin and relying on Hayton. We have a new coach and with the injuries there has been little consistency with the lines (other than on D)......there are new systems with the new coach too so I'm sure we are a work in progress. According to may Clarkson fans........Morris's teams are known for slower starts but come the second half he has them humming, playing and doing things the way he wants. We are far from that right now. I'm hoping with you guys coming to Appleton tomorrow you'll bring out the best in us (which we haven't seen so far.)

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 2016-17 - It's 873 miles to Chicago...

I've got a better feeling about tonight after last night's performance. The question is can they sustain it? If they play like they did against Clarkson and clean up the few problems they had, they'll be ok against SLU. If they don't, then it might be a long night and an even longer bus ride home. In any event, it appears that they used to off-weekend in a positive way and are maybe poised to play to their potential. Tonight they'll need to keep peppering Hayton and keep him moving. Whenever we've faced him he's been a bit of bully and I think that takes him off his game.

Hopefully it will be a good, close game.

Go Q!

Just an FYI. The NCAA went back to allowing hockey freshman to play in '73-'74. It has been that way since. Brian McColgan graduated in 1988, and played four seasons.........See: http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=15527

Any idea what's up with DeRoche? Saw he is no longer on Cedar Rapids roster and not protected by. Saw Topeka in NAHL has protected but not on active roster. He is a very good player and I thought was a huge get by Q

Still will be a very good D1 kid

I saw him still on the Cedar Rapids roster but he has been scratched the past few games.

So much for that. After the 1st, they simply stopped playing their game. I don't know if it was frustration or whatever, but they stopped executing and started freelancing it seemed. They definitely didn't seem like the same team that played Friday night.

Except for the 2 breakaways I thought Truehl was solid and kept us in the game. Not sure he can be faulted for those goals anyway. Yeah, maybe he coulda/shoulda stole one or both, but not much else he really could have done.

Should make for an interesting week of practice. Another big weekend looms... maybe some home cooking will serve them well.

Quinnipiac and Boston University to continue their non-conference men's hockey series. Terriers come to Hamden next season; at BU in 18-19

Great pickup for the future schedules.

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 2016-17 - It's 873 miles to Chicago...

Pretty quiet here in the last few weeks. Looking forward to tonight and tomorrow as 2 teams off to good starts are coming into Hamden. As it has been all season, it will interesting to see who's in net this weekend.
