Question on Recruiting

Re: Question on Recruiting

Do tell, where are the Timmy's in the NY area. I try and get my fix whenever I can. I freely admit that I am addicted. There is no coffee better, although Green Mountain Coffee comes the closest.

We too have found that--in the absence of Timmy's--Green Mountain Coffee is a reasonable substitute.

Perhaps it's my LI upbringing, but I find Dunkin Donuts to be the best. I do recall enjoying Green Mountain on occasion while visiting New England on ski trips, but haven't yet had enough contact with Timmy's to develop a releationship with their coffee just yet. :o

At the risk of sounding like an intolerant coffee snob, once you are used to having Tim Hortons, Dunkin Donuts brew seems pretty much undrinkable.

Apparently there are now 11 Timmy's locations in NYC, which is the centre of the universe, isn't it? Tomorrow Pinky, it's time to take over the world....:p

Yes, it is the centre (you're so Canadian! :) ) of the Universe and after my Yankees win tomorrow evening ...

I just happen to live no where near there right now and have a hard enough time getting a good DD coffee here. It's the water. Don't have any Timmy's or Green Mountain's out here either. Not much of a Starbucks fan ...

You are so right, with regards to DD coffee. It taste burnt and disgusting.

Re: Question on Recruiting

If you decide you are going to play college athletics the athletics takes precedence over pretty much everything, including shotgun weddings, weddings planned two years in advance, and made for television weddings.
This is true because the powers that be in athletics have said it is true. There really isn't any logic-based reason for it. In most jobs, where hopefully the workers are paid a good deal more for their time than the average student athlete, it is accepted that employees are going to need to take time off of work. Coaches are quick to use the "you're hurting the team by missing a game message", then they'll turn around and bench a player for violation of some team rule. Isn't that hurting the team? We all give more weight to the sport and its games that it really deserves, routinely missing work to watch the games. But deep down, it is JUST a game, and it really isn't healthy to lose sight of that.

Hockey Canada is the worst, scheduling camps during the first week or two of school. USA Hockey takes schooling into account, and is one of the reasons why the US does not participate in the U22 tourney in January.
...
You want to be able to take time off to attend to family events? Fine, go play intramurals, where commitment isn't required.
And this brings us to one of the most messed up examples of this commitment -- the 2004 NCAA Frozen Four. Forget some relatively unimportant regular season game during the first half of the season, student athletes from two of the four teams had to miss D-I's ultimate weekend because Hockey Canada needed them at a pre-World Championship camp. So they miss what they've worked toward all season for a couple of practices. Their absences definitely hurt their teams, even though their teams could see them coming. IMO, it creates two different classes of members on a team if the national team types will come and go as their national governing bodies see fit, but the "regular" players had better be there every game no matter what, even if they might not leave the bench, or worse yet, dress for the game. Commitments are a balancing act, and they will be throughout a person's life. I think this question needs more thoughtful reasoning than a dismissive, "go play intramurals".

Re: Question on Recruiting

Didn't the original post say that the coach approved the absence? If that is the case, then there should be no further discussion and no consequence to the player for missing games or practices.

Yeah, but, that would kill all the fun!

True, but I think to keep beating this hypothetical situation to death is getting old. Every situation is different, as is every coaching staff. What one coach may allow, another may not.

The original post went from an approved absence to attend a family wedding, to discussion of abandoning a team to attend a shot gun wedding or granny's funeral, or maybe it was granny's shotgun wedding:eek:

Personally, I'm on a bye week so I'm looking for topics, and over the years, the following have been worn out: to check or not to check; eastern/western bias; how can you announce where a player is going if they haven't signed an NLI yet; Katie Stone skates 2 lines; fire Coach {insert name of somebody who isn't giving my daughter enough ice time here}; down with the refs; Shannon Miller -- greatest coach in the history of sport; all things NAHA. But to honor your request, I promise to post no more on this topic (which is admittedly, off topic. :D )

Fine....how about "Go take up hunting with ARM.":p

:D :D
You forgot Whoopie Pie stories and whether players should be able to transfer/without sitting.

Your right...most topics are actually pretty old and are regularly recycled, so a little controversy on something new to spice things up and generate actual discussion really can't be a bad thing, can it?

How about gun control? :D ;)

Re: Question on Recruiting

Okay, so, I had an idea..... (which admittedly is technically off topic, although a review of the last few posts might prove that I am more in synch than I know!)

Maybe this is the year that we introduce the "Whoopie Awards". At the end of the season, immediately after the Frozen Four, we can look back and nominate USCHO members for the most memorable posts in a variety of categories.

Somehow we can figure out a short list of voters who will subsequently announce "And the Whoopie for ................... goes to......................!"

ARM, my sympathies....bye weeks are horrible things! (perhaps even moreso after suffering a 2 game sweep? )

I appreciate the timing of 4 Nations and the scheduling of a coinciding off week for MN because it overlaps my state's deer season. As for it coming after being swept, from what I saw, they could use a bit of a break.
