Friars 3-3-0 .500 for the Season

Friars lost 4-1 to Syracuse on Saturday to split the series with the Orange. Syracuse beat NU 4-2, lost to UNH 3-2, lost to Clarkson 2-1 and 4-1 so battle tested. This seems to be a year of parity for Friars and many Teams "Crazy Olympic Year" has made for many early surprises....This week alone - Unranked The Ohio State traveling to #5 UND and getting a Saturday win, #2 BC knocked off by unranked UNH at home in Boston, and former ranked Mercyhurst going to #3 Clarkson and getting a rode win and a tie.

It is early and I see things about this Team that can result in future wins and series sweeps just have to keep improving, learning and playing as a Team. Last year the Team was also 3-3-0 after the first six games.

DATE OPPONENT W/L SCORE
---------- ---------------------- --- -----
Oct 05 BSU L 2-3
Oct 06 BSU W 5-1
Oct 12 at Mercyhurst L 3-6
Oct 13 at #9 Mercyhurst L 0-5
*Oct 20 UVM W 4-3
*Oct 21 UVM W 4-1

Saturday Line Up/Lines - The starting forward lines juggled a little looking for more scoring punch. The most improved F at this point in the year looks like Courtney Kukowski she is generating great scoring chances and working very hard to put others in. Micheletti used her speed this weekend very well both offensively and defensively. Weber stood out for her play making in the O zone willing to work and move the puck to set up a scoring. Buie was a force both games and played with an edge. I do think this is a group that can score +4 goals a game.

LW 12 Janine Weber 0-0-0 1/-1 C 11 Corinne Buie 0-0-0 2/-1 RW 5 Courtney Kukowski 0-0-0 2/-1
LW 21 Haley Frade 0-0-0 3/-1 C 10 Molly Illikainen 0-0-0 1/-1 RW 26 Allison Micheletti 0-1-1 1/+1
LW 29 Cassidy Carels 0-0-0 0/-1 C 17 Brooke Simpson 0-1-1 5/E RW 28 Beth Hanrahan 1-0-1 7/E
LW 16 Brittney Thunstrom 0-0-0 0/-1 RW 9 Stephanie DeMars 0-0-0 0/E

The freshman D are getting a lot of experience and shifts, adjusting well to the speed and pace of D1. The group only allowed 20 shots on goal on Saturday. Lots of depth as 3 D have been out of the line up.

LD 14 Victoria Virtue 0-0-0 0/E RD 8 Lexi Romanchuk 0-0-0 0/-1
LD 2 Maggie Pendleton 0-0-0 3/-1 RD 22 Kendra Goodrich 0-0-0 0/-1
LD 7 Rebecca Morse 0-0-0 0/-1 RD 4 Liv Halvorson 0-0-0 1/E
XD 18 Arianna Reid 0-0-0 0/E

Bryant played both games this weekend and was outstanding on Friday.

G 27 Sarah Bryant 0-0-0 0

HE starts next weekend with a home and home with NU. Will seem odd to watch with so many of the strongest players no longer on the NU roster this year. NU game on Friday night from Mathews will be on the what I think is the best HD in Women's College Hockey or at least HE. The Saturday game from the New Schneider Arena maybe a COX broadcast which will be great for the Friends of the Friars around the world.

GO FRIARS!

Re: Providence Friars "Special Season 2013-214" - 1974 to 2014 40 Years of Leadership

Nice "Cocktail Hour" Factoids from the HE Weekly Recap

Providence: After Friday's win over Syracuse five players have notched at least a two-game point streak thus far on the season. Two of those five players have notched at least one point in four of the Friars' six games so far. Senior Corinne Buie (Edina, Minn.) leads the Friars in scoring with six points in six games, it is the most points she has collected in the first six games of the season throughout her career. Providence topped No. 10 Mercyhurst (Oct. 13), 3-2, for their first win over a ranked opponent since the 2011-12 season, when the Friars topped No. 7 Northeastern in the Hockey East semifinal game on March 3, 2012. - See more at: http://www.hockeyeastonline.com/women/pres1314/201310/oct21wwr.php#sthash.gIBeBiBo.dpuf

Friars' win over Mercyhurst now looks more impressive with the Lakers shutting out Clarkson last night.

Agree. Though talk about an enigmatic team. Kinda Jekyll and Hyde.

Showdown of the NU Huskies 3-3-0 and PC Friars 3-3-0 this Weekend

Great Hockey East rival over the last three years the Friar vs NU games have been some of the best hockey we have watched, Team always seems to compete hard. NU has had key players graduate or with Olympic program, so big opportunity!

Great viewing is true if you are at the games or watching remote. For those of you not traveling or local you are in luck, though we have high expectations for all of you there to represent us all!

Special thanks to Jennifer Friedman for clarifying the broadcast info:

Friday 10/25 nights broadcast by NU at 7 PM EST is High Definition with a very good broadcast team http://gonu.com/index.aspx?path=whockey Mathews Arena is very historic.

Saturday 10/26 game at 3:00 PM EST is at http://coxsportsonline.com/live-steaming/ This is a COX Broadcast game but we can all see as a stream. Again great camera coverage broadcast team and even between period interviews. This will be a Pro PC Broadcast Team!

If you want family, friends or hockey fans to see great Friar hockey forward these links.

GO FRIARS!!

They are charging for games this year. Last year with construction games were free, but now that New Schneider is done there is admission.

Friars 4-3 over NU

The Friars are now in winning territory at 4-3-0 and have the chance to win their first series of the season The new black jerseys that debuted last night were striking and provided a new jump! Loved everything I saw last night and hopeful for today's "TV GAME" live on COX and streamed globally to all Friar Faithful.

Corinne Buie again had a huge game last night with a goal and assist, sporting a new lucky #13 jersey last night (anyone else say who is 13?) maybe it should stay? Have to love the official score sheet:

Three stars:
1. Hanrahan, Beth
2. Mottau, Heather
3. 13

Courtney Kukowski a "Most Improved" candidate on the Team again stood out with a gritty rebound goal to get it started. Allison Micheletti is a masterful PK specialist and her tenacity and speed generated a very pretty shorty! When the game is on the line no one seems to love it more than Beth Hannarahan "gunner" should be her nickname as she ripped in the game winner! Friars rolled four lines and brought a fast paced attack. If you watched the game though you saw lots of offense (Simpson, Illikainen both were very active in O zone and generated great scoring chances) and could have been a higher score if not for some big NU goalie play.

The Power Play was back at a .333% conversion with 2 goals on 6 chances. The Friars went to a 5 forward PP look a few times during the game.

Friars D was 7 strong last night which should make for fresh jump today up front and in D zone.

Sarah Bryant in goal shut the door and made several big saves in scrambles and on a breakaway.

Its early but great chance to move to the top of Hockey East today with a win today.

GO FRIARS!

NU 4 – PC 1 – Ground Hog Day Another Split

Saturday was a chance for the Friars to move up to the top of Hockey East and win their first series of the year. To that end the Friars hustled and outshot NU 31-17 much of the success was some good down low cycling in the zone once in the zone. Freshman D Liv Halvorson ripped her first college goal from the point off two good passes from Maggie Pendleton to Haley Frade to Halvorson. She will score many more with her size, strength, hands and understanding of when to jump up in the play.

Friday the Friars used their speed, size and teammates to beat NU (no wins for Friars last year versus NU) better than Saturday. Several odd man rushes including a 4-1 had no passes inside the blue line. A D1 goaltender is seldom beat by a shooter unless they are forced to react, move and reset. As the Friars achieve puck movement like Friday, they will find that +4 goals per game that the Friars are capable of.

Next week is a home - home with top ranked BC - signature series opportunity.

GO FRIARS

Good commentary on PC today.

College Hockey:
Wednesday Women: Looking East
By Candace Horgan and Arlan Marttila • Oct. 30, 2013

What do you think about another storied program in Providence so far? I had high hopes for the Friars, but to date, they’ve been one step forward and the next one back. They get the Eagles twice plus a game with UNH in the first week of November, so we should get some more information on whether Bob Deraney’s squad is capable of contending.

Candace: There’s a lot of potential upside over in Providence. Two key players, Molly Illikainen and Haley Frade, are actually off to slow starts offensively. Yet Providence has a lot of people putting up points. Corinne Buie is off to a great start in her senior year with eight points, and freshman Cassidy Carels seems to be a great addition to the lineup; she’s tied with a few other players for second in team scoring with four points. If Illikainen and Frade start producing at the same clip they did last year (close to a point a game), Providence is going to be a team no one wants to get into a shootout with.

The downside for the Friars is defense. I’m reluctant to throw a goalie under the bus, because a lot of things can be the cause of stats, but Sarah Bryant, who has played the majority of games for the Friars so far, has only an .892 save percentage and a 2.83 goals-against average. That’s just not going to get it done. Providence has to tighten up the ship defensively to have a shot at the playoffs. I’m sure coach Bob Deraney is wishing that he had Genevieve Lacasse back in net with the offense he currently has, but goaltenders like Lacasse only come along so often.

If the defense can tighten down and provide Bryant some support, Providence could be a dangerous team to face come playoff time. We’ll know more about Providence after its next six games, as in addition to BC and UNH, the Friars travel to Clarkson for a pair. I think Providence should be shooting for 4-2 or better over this stretch if the Friars want to prove themselves a legitimate playoff team.

Hux reports the following 2014-15 Recruits Headed to PC a Goalie and 3 Forwards. Will track this group over the season.

With graduations (D -Morse, Pendleton; F - Buie, Weber PG, G - Riley) this will give the Team 3 G, 7 D, 13 F. Demars has a redshirt from her freshman year and can return for a 5th year.

Providence
Brooke Boquist .................F................................ ..(SSM) ..........................Thunder Bay, ON
Blair Parent .....................F .................................(Anoka) .................................Anoka, MN (finished 8th in Fall Elite League with 4 goals in 12 games)

Hockey Writers Pick BC - Providence Game of the Week
http://thehockeywriters.com/ncaa-womens-hockey-morning-skate-november-1st-2013/

Game of the Week
#4 Boston College at Providence, Fri. 11/1 @ 7 p.m. EST; Providence at #4 Boston College, Sun. 11/3 @ 2 p.m. EST
The stage is set for a big home-and-home series between the two Hockey East squads. The Eagles, after dropping games to New Hampshire and Syracuse in the past couple of weeks, can’t afford another loss right now. They’ve got to get back on the right track at some point and string together some dominant performances, especially on defense. This weekend is a good opportunity for Boston College to do that, but the Friars’ offense could prove to be a lot for them to handle. Although they’ve got the firepower up front to outscore Providence, the Eagles really need a good showing on the defensive side of the puck for a full 60 minutes in both games.

Providence has gone back and forth with every team they’ve played this year, splitting all four of their series so far. While I wouldn’t expect a sweep for the Friars, if they can come out of this weekend and still have a .500 record it’ll be good for them, especially confidence-wise. Providence’s top-six has proven to be really strong at times, and they’ve got a decent chance here against Boston College if they’re at their best. They’re going to need players like Rebecca Morse and Maggie Pendleton to step up on the back-end, however, to try and limit the Eagles’ attack, and Sarah Bryant will also have to be ready in net.

Splitsville - Game 10!

First great video just posted - Christmas Morning as the Team went into new Locker Room first time back in September http://www.friars.com/sports/w-hockey/prov-w-hockey-body.html Look under more videos and women's locker room. For anyone who has not been to the New Scheinder I hope they post a video of the training room, weight training, sprint track, bike room, shooting & stickhandling room and the training room - UNBELIEVABLE FACILITIES to develop success! I am truly impressed with the tools in place to attract and develop great players.

Teams seldom use series splits as a key to a season but today's match at Cherry Hill versus BC may be one. Friday the Friars at the New Schneider won 1st Period 2-1 and 3rd Period 5-2 but lost 2nd period 5-0. With a win PC moves to 2nd with a loss possibly bottom of Hockey East. BC called Friday's game ridiculous and PC good - from my view Friars are "Ridiculously Good" just need to play three periods like they did 1 & 3 on Friday. For whatever reason the second period seems to be the Teams biggest challenge over their first 9 games.

Boston University 3 W 0 L 0 T 6 points
Boston College 2 W 1 L 0 T 4 points
New Hampshire 1 W 1 L 1 T 3 points
Northeastern 1 W 2 L 1 T 3 points
Vermont 1 W 1 L 0 T 2 points
Maine 0 W 1 T 2 T 2 points
Providence 1 W 2 L 0 T 2 points
Connecticut 0 W 1 L O T 0 points

I watched the Team skate yesterday at PC and Friars looked loose, focused and ready. It was nice to see D Lexi Slattery back on the ice. She, Suzy Lundeen and Ari Buxman put in some extra work and are staying ready to contribute as needed.

Despite the start the vision on campus is to have Woman and Men both win Hockey East for the first time ever. Watching the men beat BU 3-1 last night they are on track. Today is a great day for a game at Cherry Hill.

GO FRIARS!!

Your team played very well I thought, particularly on D which kept the Eagles bottled up for pretty much two full periods. Unfortunate to run into the Eagles at the midst disciplined and focused I've seen them this season. Great game!

Yes very defensive game compared to Friday night. With 24 shots for BC and 17 for the Friars if you love soccer you would have loved this game. Lots of puck movement by both teams. The winner was a 2-1 very well executed by BC. I will give the Friars credit they came ready to play and had a good effort in goal and across all three zones and 4 periods of play. More of that will result in a great season in the end.
