BIG HOCKEY EAST AWARDS FOR THE FRIARS...NICE

Women's Hockey Captures Hockey East Team Of The Week
Carels and Buie earn Rookie and Player of the Week honors for their play over the weekend.
Nov. 25, 2013

Wakefield, Mass. - The Providence College women's hockey team earned Hockey East Team of the Week, announced Monday, Nov. 25. Providence snapped a seven game losing streak with a weekend sweep over Maine. Senior Corinne Buie (Edina, Minn.) and freshman Cassidy Carels (Bruxelles, Manitoba) were recognized with weekly league honors for their efforts on the weekend.

Buie was named Hockey East Warrior Hockey Player of the Week for her seven point performance over the weekend. Buie tallied three assists in the Friars 8-1 win over Maine on Nov. 23, before leading the Friars with four points on two goals and two assists in Providence's 4-2 win on Nov. 24. Buie's four points matched a career-high on Sunday. It was the fifth and sixth time this season that she has collected multipoint. Her seven point weekend puts her within five points of the 100 career point mark. It is the first time this season Buie has been recognized with Player of the Week honors and she is the first since Nicole Anderson `13 earned Player of the Week on March 4, 2013.

Carels collected three goals for her first collegiate hat trick in the Friars win on Nov. 23. It marked the first time a rookie notched a hat trick since Nicole Anderson `13 did so on Oct. 16, 2009. Carels finished the weekend with a plus-three plus-minus rating and registered 10 shots on goal. Carels leads her class in scoring with 11 points on two assists and a team-best nine goals. With her third multi-goal game, Carels has now earned Rookie of the Week honors twice (10/7, 11/25).

The Friars were named team of the week after collecting their first weekend series sweep of the season. Providence's 8-1 win over Maine was a season-high in goals and the first time the Friars have notched eight or more goals since Jan. 27, 2013, when they toppled Maine 9-2. It was the first time this season the Friars have earned team of the week honors and the first since March 4, 2013, following the Friars comeback overtime victory at New Hampshire in the Hockey East quarterfinal game.

Head Coach Bob Deraney is now one win away from tying the all-time Providence coaching record.

The Friars are back in action on Saturday, Nov. 30 when they play host to cross-town rival Brown in the 19th annual Mayor's Cup game. The puck is set to drop at 3:00 p.m. in Schneider Arena.

GO FRIARS!!

Nice article. Two comments.....

1 - Still remember the 1990 event like it was yesterday. Lived in the Ottawa area where the event was held in the Civic Centre. This was before the days of the Ottawa Senators, so the event garnered a lot of local attention. At the time the Civic Center, a 9000 seat facility was by far the largest hockey venue in town, with the local OHL club being the main tenant. One of the more memorable discussion points was the Pink Maple Leaf, and off course the win by the "Home" team.

2 - More history coming up this Saturday as two local teams, both celebrating major milestones, are facing off in the annual mayor's cup. Brown (50 years) vs Providence (40 years).

Friar's Recapture Mayor's Cup with 3-2 OT Win over Brown
Team moves to 7-10-0

Friar's captured their third win in a row on an OT goal by Janine Weber off a long breakaway pass from Maggie Pendleton. The Friar's trailed 1-0 and tied it 1-1 on a a pretty shorthanded goal by Molly Illikainen where she showed great patience for the play to develop and beat the Brown goalie. Brown led 2-1 before Beth Hanrahan scored at 14:51 to tie the score and force an overtime. Hanrahan almost scored off the opening face off of overtime. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQzcFsasFbs

Sarah Bryant made 24 saves in goal.

Head Coach Bob Deraney captured the all-time wins record for the school with his 265th career win. He moved his all-time record to 265-197-61!!

It was a fun day at the New Schneider Arena with lots of Brown and Friar parents, friends and fans on hand. Former Friar goalie Christina England was honored for her service in the US Air Force after the first period - she is using her goalie eye to be designated a sharpshooter marksman and finished with honors at the top of her class. She shared firing a grenade launcher is pretty thrilling stuff! Fun time up in the Leary Friends of the Friar Room including a 90th Birthday Toast and Song to Friar Faithful Fan Emily Ruzzi.

Nice to see the Team gaining confidence and battling to wins. The Friars face Yale next week before breaking for exams and Christmas Break.

GO FRIARS!!

Would like to take this opportunity to thank JoeHockey and the rest of the Friar Host committee for the warm welcome given to the the Brown faithful at the Schneider Facility during the annual Mayor's Cup. It was very well done, and enjoyed by all. The tribute for Emily Ruzzi, 90 years young and grand parent of Nina Riley, was very nicely done. Fans also got treated to a hard nosed but entertaining game that could have gone either way. Congrats to the Friars for taking back the Cup.

Your upgraded facility is simply marvelous. Best I've seen in College Hockey.

Big Honors for a former Friar (played against her a number of times back in the old days!)

While the 2013 U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame class is as diverse as any that has been inducted in the hall’s 40-year history, its members are also as connected as any.

Growers of the Game

Perhaps the most notable achievement of this class as a whole is how it helped grow the game of hockey in the United States.

While Curley is the one member that doesn’t have a hockey background connection to the rest of the class, her contributions cannot be understated. She was a pioneer with the U.S. Women’s National Team. She was a member of the women’s team that played in the inaugural IIHF Women’s World Championship in 1990, where she posted 23 points in five games, a record that still stands today.

Following her career, she has worked with USA Hockey in several capacities, most recently as a member of the U.S. Olympic Athlete Advisory Committee.

One of the main reasons she continued to dedicate herself to the game even after her playing career was all of the people she met along the way, she said.

“My favorite part of hockey has always been the people I’ve met over the years,” she said.

New England Hockey Journal Story

Women's Journal: Adversity should do the Friars some good

By Kat Hasenauer Cornetta

There are teams made up of great athletes, and then there are great teams. Providence College women’s hockey head coach Bob Deraney desires the latter.

Deraney (West Roxbury, Mass.) -- who won his 265th game as a coach Nov. 30 with a 3-2 overtime win against Brown in their 19th annual Mayor’s Cup matchup -- is in the midst of an unexpectedly difficult season. His Friars sit tied for fifth in Hockey East with a 3-5-0 league mark and a 7-10-0 overall record. A two-win weekend against Maine Nov. 23-24 ended a seven-game losing streak, but they closed out their semester with a 5-1 loss against Yale last Friday.

These results are surprising for a team who boasted a high number of returners, peppered with some of the league’s best recruits. Deraney sees the adversity as creating the type of team he desires – a cohesive team, as opposed to a group of solid skating individuals.

“I have to use an example from college basketball to explain it,” said Deraney last week. “There are two types of teams in basketball who win championships. There are teams full of one and dones, athletes who will go pro after that first year. Then there are great teams that may not have the best skill, but can be the best team. We might not have the most skill, but we can be the best team.

“It was hard to go through a losing stream like that. But the losing will eventually make us a great team.”

Deraney could see his skaters making important gains despite that losing streak that lead him to believe that the Friars won’t be mired near the bottom of Hockey East for long.

“Going through that losing streak was hard, but you could see the progress happening,” said Deraney, who pointed to grad student Janine Weber (formerly of the Austrian National Team) and sophomore Brittney Thunstrom as making some of the biggest strides.

One of the season’s highlights has been the immediate contribution of freshman winger Cassidy Carels, who sits third in the team’s individual scoring with nine goals and two assists. The Canadian Under 18 team member was a big part of the Friars breaking their losing streak, scoring a hat trick in the November 23rd 8-1 win against Maine. “When you talk about goal scorers, they have that knack around the net, and Cassidy has that. She has that knack and that fight to get herself in that place. A lot of our young players do.”

Deraney looks for a “knack” like Carels when recruiting. “I don’t know if you can teach it, but you can bring it out in them. We recruit them because they have it.”

What Deraney has shown over the years is that he has “it” when it comes to coaching and recruiting. He is now Providence College’s most successful coach in terms of wins, with a record of 265-198-61 over 15 years, but he almost wasn’t aware of his record setting achievement.

“To be honest, I wasn’t aware of it until Steve Maurano (Assistant Vice President for Public Affairs and Community Relations) contacted me and said, ‘Congrats, Coach, you’re one win away from breaking the record.’ I got back to him and told him, ‘Thanks, but I had absolutely no idea!’

“At the end of the day, it’s a player and team honor. It means that I have had the honor of coaching some pretty special players over the years. I told my team that. I’ve had the best seat in the house to see some really special players, and that’s the greatest honor.”

Two Friar recruits for 2014-15 will be in action at the East Coast Wizards Holiday tournament in Boston, the weekend after Christmas. The Buffalo Bisons Madison Sansone, and CYA's Alanna Serviss. I had a chance to see Brooke Boquist of SSM over the weekend, very talented center, great puck control and a scrappy player who likes digging in the corners.

Friars Continue to Battle Hard

As catch up Friars continue to play hard outshooting Yale 39-29 but losing 5-1 before break and outshooting Dartmouth 30-25 and leading 2-0 after 2nd but dropping 3-2 on New Years Eve.

Last night the Friars lost to RPI 3-1 outshooting them 33-21 but giving up the game winning goal as a short handed goal. The goal came off the Friar PP with only one D on the blue line (this formation has given up all 6 shorthanded goals for the season - breakaways UGHH..). RPI added an open net goal at the end of the game.

The shot advantage ultimately should turn the Friars results. They play their final non conference game against RPI today at 4 PM. Next week they have a home and home with UNH, Friday at UNH and home on Saturday in a pair of 7 PM games.

Friars Produce 4-3 OT Win

Friars juggled line ups and produced an exciting 4-3 OT win over RPI this afternoon. Friars open on a PP goal by Beth Hanrahan followed by a goal by Janine Weber to go up 2-0. RPI scored to draw back to 2-1 before Brittney Thunstrum on a 2 on 1 rush made a beautiful behind the back pass to Courtney Kukowski. RPI never quit scoring at 14:59 and 6-5 at the 19:59.5 mark to send the game to overtime.

Lexi Romanchuk blasted a shot from the blue line over the RPI goalies glove hand for the game winner.

Sarah Bryant got the win in goal for PC. The Friars outshot RPI 35 to 18 in the win.

Sophomore D Lexi Slattery returned to the lineup. Health scratches for the Friars were D Maggie Pendleton SR, Rebecca Morse SR and Ari Buxman FR. FR D Liv Halvorson was helped off the ice with a lower body injury late in the game.

Great honor to a great player and person!

Lexi Romanchuk Captures Hockey East Player Of The Week Honors
Romanchuk led the Friars in a 4-3 overtime win against RPI with three points.

Romanchuk is tied for second among all Hockey East defensemen with 12 points.

Jan. 7, 2014

Wakefield, Mass. - Providence College women's hockey sophomore Lexi Romanchuk (San Jose, Calif.) was named Hockey East Warrior Hockey Player of the Week on Monday, Jan. 6. Romanchuk earned the honor after posting a three-point performance against Rensselaer on Jan. 5.

Romanchuk notched four points in the Friars last three games with an assist against Dartmouth (Dec. 31) and a goal and two assists against RPI (Jan. 5). Romanchuk's goal came at 3:38 of the overtime frame, when she blasted a point shot upstairs for her first career overtime tally and second game-winning goal of the season (first came against Maine on Nov. 24). The three-point performance marked a career-high for the sophomore defenseman.

It is the first time in Romanchuk's career that she has been recognized by the league with weekly honors. The last Friar to be named Hockey East Player of the Week was senior Corinne Buie (Edina, Minn.) after posting a seven point (2-5-7) weekend to help the Friars sweep Hockey East opponent Maine (Nov. 23 and Nov. 24).

The Friars are back in action on Friday, Jan. 10, when they travel to Durham, N.H. to take on the New Hampshire Wildcats in a 7:00 p.m. puck drop at the Whittemore Center. It will mark the first of the final 13 regular season Hockey East games for Providence.

Re: Providence Friars "Special Season 2013-214" - 1974 to 2014 40 Years of Leadership

Time to Celebrate A Split

Each twenty minute period and 24 hours felt like a parallel universe like some old superhero comic book for the Team and Fans who saw the UNH - Providence home and home series.

First look at the shot swings Friday 1st UNH 12 - PC 4, 2nd PC 13 - UNH 11, 3rd UNH 9 - PC 3. At the game it felt like UNH dominated 1st and 3rd and PC totally controlled 2nd. UNH nailed the coffin in the 3rd with 3 goals. Bryant was very strong in goal for PC especially in the first 20 minutes. Saturday night shots and momentum were also ever changing PC 10 - UNH 3 in the first. PC 11 to UNH 4 in the second and then UNH 9 - PC 4 in the third. In the third UNH never quit and after the Dartmouth third period Schneider Arena was uneasy. Credit Bryant and the Friars though in completing the game.

What was the difference in the two games for PC? Friday night on the big ice the skates were not moving and the Friars were playing lug the puck up ice and try to beat 3 Wildcats. On Saturday the Friars showed superior speed and really had great puck movement. Several Friars hit pipes or the game would have been even higher scoring.

The Friars took 5 penalties to the Wildcats 1 on Saturday generally not a ratio that brings success but the PK was stellar.

The players were all happy after the game especially Allison Micheletti with a two goal night and Corrine Buie who recorded her 100th college point!

Next game is a big one BU at home on Friday. Great time to move the skates, use the Team speed and distribute the puck - time to start a winning streak!

GO FRIARS!!
