Life After 10

The Friars finished their 10th game on Saturday and have 24 regular season games to go.

Through 10 last year Team was 6-3-1 while this year the Team is 4-6-0 but having played a tougher opening schedule (2012 Bemidji State, Merchyhurst, St Cloud, Vermont, Maine vs 2013 (Union, Mercyhurst, Syracuse, NU, BC).

Last year the team had 33 Goals For and 29 Goals Against versus this year the Team has 26 Goals For and 36 Goals Against.

Interesting statistics, but I think that 25% of the way through the season that this team is not performing up to the general expectations for them. Still a lot of opportunity to turn that around, but it definitely needs to get better soon. It feels like this team has more talent than their performance would indicate - don't know if that is team chemistry, coaching, immaturity (Hockey wise) for the freshman, etc. but the team is clearly inconsistent and you never know what you're going to get game to game...

Probably can't disagree that the Team is not where it expected to be.

Some possible contributing factors and rays of hope.

1) PC traditionally has started slow - not sure why? The Team usually comes on and hope to see the same this year.

2) Depth has been nice but might be part of chemistry you note. In games playing 7 D (3 freshman, 1 soph, 1 jr, 2 sr) effective D often have a great partner and know what each other will do. At forward Team is playing three lines and rotating in 2 forwards. Again great experience but the flow sometimes is off. Maybe they will move to 3 sets of D and 4 lines? Great experience for many players and good insurance should any injuries effect Team. The Team has been injury free with the exception of D Lexi Slattery who has been out all but one game.

3) Goaltending has been a little bit by committee but looks like Bryant may be the go to. I think she has great potential and like the rest of the Team needs a strong 60 minutes of performance every outing. I would not be surprised to see Riley and Morse continue to work into games.

4) Coaching has a plan and I know they are experienced staff that knows how to teach and has a great new facility to teach and develop in.

5) Competition I like the tougher schedule PC has opened with and hope it pays dividends on the go forward. Like others I hoped PC would be in the Top 10 discussion. Lets hope this is the only down quarter of the year! What is the old saying it is not where you start but where you finish.

GO FRIARS!!

Wow - didn't see the game, but they outshot UNH 30-23, held a 2-0 lead after 1, were skating 4 lines and 6 D against 3 lines and 5 D, and still let UNH come back to win 4-2. Goaltending is clearly an issue on this team (saves percentages validate),but starting to think that conditioning may be an issue as well.

I watched the Game. Great HE contest and credit to the Wildcats for the win.

What I see is the Team is very successful when they play as a Team, first period was example of that, they created mismatches attacking as units of 5. End of Friday BC game incredible puck movement and teamwork in last two minutes is also an example of Teams win in a Team game. They are not effective when they are individually trying to beat the other opponents, it just results in players in wrong places and puck in the back of Friar net.

The Team did miss Corinne Buie in the line up, as she has been having a great season and is a high impact player. Lexi Slattery a natural D returned to line up and played F last night.

Roller Coaster
What goes down must come up....

Two tough Hockey East losses last week have been the low point of the season to date to take the record to 4-8-0. Great games where Friars played parts of the games well but not a full 60 minutes. An injury to leading scorer Corinne Buie effected the outcome without doubt in both games. On Sunday an injury to starter Sarah Bryant kept her out of goal. The Friars have 3 one goal wins and 3 one goal losses.

So I will likely be the only person to pick PC to knock off #7 Clarkson on the road in Postdam, NY but I think the Team will be ready and played right with higher ranked BC. A winning streak starts with one win and I think the Friar talent and Team play will be in action this week.

GO FRIARS!!

Re: Providence Friars "Special Season 2013-214" - 1974 to 2014 40 Years of Leadership

Clarkson is Really Good
Seventh Straight Loss
Record: 4-10-0

The Friars lost 5-1 Friday and 4-0 Saturday to Clarkson. I was very impressed with the Team play of Clarkson they attack and defend as a group of 5 and created the man advantage in all three zones because of it. Glad I made the trip to see them, Clarkson will be in the hunt in March. They were physical and used their strength to outmuscle the Friars who competed hard all weekend. I hope the Friars watch and learn from the video how and why Clarkson shut them down. Howe is an excellent goaltender best I have seen this year.

Both games the Friars played well in the first period only yielding goals late in the period. Friars started the games well dumping, chasing and forechecking hard. They would get the puck and move it around the zone, out to the points and showed patience.

The Team, coaches and players obviously felt the pressure to beat Clarkson and end their losing streak. In both games it was a different Team in the 2nd and 3rd period once they fell behind - they tried to win alone versus play as a Team. A lot of the Team is from MN and at times it looks like all the players are trying to play like MN HS hockey lugging the puck end to end. D and F showed this and it just is not a winning approach for success at D1 and in Hockey East. The Team needs to have D pairs that work together to help lower Goals Against, not try to rush and score in the offensive zone. Clarkson did not need the help of 1-0, 2-1 and 3-1 they created because Friar D were down to low in O zone, tightening up D is clear need. Friars were outshot in both games and that is not going to work as it did in the Lacasse era. Forwards in the O zone need to play like they did in the first period, get the puck low, move to the points, control the puck and move to scoring opportunities. The Team forwards are great players but you can't rush 1 versus 3 or even 1 vs 4 and expect success. When shut down on these rushes the forwards took careless O zone penalties, hooking, tripping or checking from behind penalties - this Team or no Team can win from being in the penalty box, right!? This is not a winning approach and until it changes the results and frustration will continue to show. It is not lack of effort that is resulting in losses, it is lack of Teamwork and each player doing their given role and working with their D partner or their line mates, trust is a a big thing in the success of a hockey team. It is a strong coaching staff and I have faith they will get the Team back to basics and play the players who execute in the game plan for a full 60 minutes - success won't come till they do.

I watch a lot of hockey but don't understand the current Friar Power Play putting a F back on D at the point? it is not generating more scoring chances for PC only short handed scoring opportunities for opponents which we clearly don't need when trailing? I do love seeing D Rebecca Morse as a F on the power play and based on scoring challenges would love to see her move to F as we get through injuries. It would also resolve the odd 7 D rotation PC has tried all year.

The Team does have some injuries and may have received a couple of more in the last minute of the game yesterday.

This adversity stretch can hopefully build a stronger Team and come in handy as the Team moves forward versus Maine, Brown and Yale leading up to break.

GO FRIARS!!

Joe:

Your insights are so good that I feel like I was at the games (I wasn't)!

Your comments are interesting. The last 3 years, it appears that Coach Deraney has totally abandoned recruiting in the North East in favor of MN players (Bryant being the exception). I would suspect that this is because he values size over speed (know several small but quick players that he told at NDC that they were too small to play D1 who are doing just fine elsewhere) and the Minny girls tend to be bigger, especially on defense. With that recruiting approach, you can't be surprised that they tend towards the individualism they learned when they spent their careers prior to college typically dominating the ice (with maybe 1 or 2 other players on their team) in their beloved high school league. The question really is why the coaching staff can't convert them to a more disciplined, team-oriented style of play. This is hard to do, but if that is the recruiting approach you take you better be capable of and prepared to do it. It would appear to me from a distance that things are getting worse, not better, as the season goes on (Clarkson's strength notwithstanding).

I've seen various teams use the 4 forward power play. The theory is that the forwards are better scorers so you want more on the ice. My experience is what you describe - you MAY generate some more chances/goals but you almost certainly give up more shorty opportunities since the F at the top of the point isn't used to handling the puck with no one behind them. It's club hockey, not college, but I once watched a very strong club team use a forward with a great slapshot at the top of the powerplay umbrella for a couple of games at a tourney. She was a great player and did generate some good shots, but the team didn't capitalize off them because they were clean looks for the goalie. More importantly, she also turned the puck over 3 times by mishandling/mispassing it of which 2 resulted in short-handed goals. The coach yelled and screamed at her each time she made a mistake, but the mistake was his because she just wasn't prepared enough to be in that position.

Sorry, Joe, but I'm not buying this argument. If what you say is at the root of the Friars' recent woes then it's a coaching issue, not where the players are from. Not only did the coaches choose to recruit these players, they've now had ample opportunity to teach them to play within whatever system they choose to use. And to further illustrate the point, two-thirds (14 of 21) of Minnesota's players hail from Minnesota, and arguably they "lugged the puck end to end" in their high school days at least as much, yet they seem to have adjusted to the college game just fine.

Fair. I am a huge supporter of MN hockey and the girls developed for D1. The skills they gain in HS generally translate to great team play and success. Minnesota is a great example of Team success with MN players. That Team has set the standard for what you can achieve playing in a selfless system.

Players play, Coaches coach and Teams win. Those 3 all are critical for success. Providence has generally started slow and over the season build a winning approach. Work in process right now, time will tell the ultimate outcome.

My post(s) on Providence are meant to be positive, I think it is great school with a values based education, a small school of 3800 where you build lifetime networks, a rich hockey tradition and new women's hockey facilities that are second to none. The current team has lots of potential and they are a great group who I believe can and will find success.

GO FRIARS!!

Re: Providence Friars "Special Season 2013-214" - 1974 to 2014 40 Years of Leadership

I don't see much of Providence or know enough about Coach Deraney to critique his coaching, but complaints about his tactics have been fairly common over the years. For example, some fans didn't like that he kept this third forward too high in the offensive zone, and that dates back about eight years ago. One thing he seems to do consistently well is that Providence is playing its best hockey come tournament time. At this stage of the game, the best thing to do is to support your kid and support her teammates. I'm sure they are all frustrated and disappointed as well.

When things go south, as they seem to have in a number of games, individual play often becomes the norm. IF they can get the goaltending straightened out it should settle the forwards and D down and allow them to concentrate on playing a team game.

An excellent goalie can make an average team look really good in a hurry, just like a weaker tender can make a really good team look average in a hurry.

If players have confidence in their goalie they will play with more confidence in front of her, but if they don't think they can rely on their goaler, the grip on the stick tends to tighten.

Friars Roll 8-1 over Maine

Friars returned to Hockey East and played the attacking team offense that had people picking them to challenge for Hockey East. New comers freshman Cassie Carels and PG Jananie Webers had 3 goals and 2 goals respectively. Thunstrom who has earned major ice time with team injuries and has used her speed very well, may be most improved this year got her first goal. Pendleton started scoring with a big shot from the point - love to see more shots like that by all the Friar D. Frade added other goal. The team really moved their feet and moved the puck to make the ice big and keep Maine chasing.

Bryant had a very good outing in goal and the Friars played smart team D.

Friars Win Again to Move Up in Hockey East
6-10-0 Overall and 3-5-0 in Hockey East

The Friars took care of business Sunday winning 4-2 over Maine. Despite trailing twice the Team stayed disciplined and played a full 60 minutes of hockey for the second day in a row resulting in a weekend sweep and moved up in the standings ahead of Maine and UConn. Corinne Buie had a big game with 2 G and 2 A. Lexi Romanchuk scored a beautiful crossbar down blast from the point on the power play - second goal from the point on the weekend and something that really opens up the zone. Allison Micheletti added the other goal. Several Friars Courtney Kukowski (F), Lexi Slattery and Kendra Goodrich (D) were out with injuries Sunday. Game highlights are in video format here http://www.hockeyeastonline.com/women/index.php

Big week ahead with the Mayor's Cup versus Brown Saturday at 3 PM at the New Schneider Arena!

GO FRIARS!!
