Providence College regrouping and on to St. Paul

Re: Providence College regrouping and on to St. Paul

I actually don’t think (god help me) Zlax is out of bounds here. I kind had that same thought in first 2 periods where they let Brown hang around being up 2-0 (and the 2nd goal was ridiculous as Brown refused to try to gain possession to stop play on a DP) yet puck possession was ridiculously in PC’s favor. Even the 3rd it was like in football you leave the defense on the field too long it will break but the looks were there and they were taking them.

Hard to judge really off 3 games since XMas and RIT just before

But defense looks better, they were layering/covering up better

Foley has made Conger look better, maybe even indoctrinate him on the 3rd line having Foley as if he was a top 6.

Printz looks better mixed in on top 2 line. We’ll see what he does vs stiffer competition.

Going back to RIT. Conway is on his best goal scoring streak since coming to PC. Again how will he do vs better competion.

It should also be clear without blow away speed by Brown the defense is helped immeasurably because Desharnais can play like a top 4, use a little muscle, his long reach and not worry about footwork. Bunz looked comfortable too and again it’s weaker competition but he seems an upgrade on Baum and better defensively the Ryzcek just not the offensive threat which is missing even if Mirageas has covered some of what Florentino/Walman provided.

Foley's stats last night were not his best game but he dominated the game when on the ice!

Re: Providence College regrouping and on to St. Paul

Question for Cav: is Erik Foley our long sought after sniper? Every other goal he's scored this year is some ridiculously beautiful snipe that makes the goalie looks silly. I haven't see most of the games this year but I like to watch the highlights the day after our wins.

(the caveat is that Tanev's goal against BU in the 2015 NT game is the greatest goal in program history. Duh)

You can cut stats many ways, you can point out differences in situations. However I would say using the eye test since DiSalvatore/Fregoe/Rask he is undisputed best sniper. Irony DiSalvatore most physically dominant of that trio but had slightly fewer goal, like Foley he arrived at 18, the others didn’t.
Pisani got better after PC so his PC career was a notch below. So that takes us back to Robbie Gaudreau as last sniper like Foley (that’s 25 years).

I think he scores due to his physicality more than any Friar. He can drag the puck in tight places very well and score. The others were the same as him. However I don’t figure he’ll be back, drafted in roughly the same place in draft as Walman, nature of CBA and his physical maturity says he leaves early.

Not like he is going to get much better next season. Take the money and turn pro

Foley should just skip practices and classes. Leaman has ruined him!

I would like to know the reason he was playing with O'Neill and Conger the other night (two freshmen, that are nowhere near his level in terms of skill)....Would be nice to see someone question Leaman about it!

Of course, you guys are all in on "LEAMAN is a GOD" so we can't question him.

Well if you were not just ranting and thought about it I think it’s a move worth trying to get which you yourself has called underperforming.

I think the move revolves around Conway and Bjorkqvist. Bjorkqvist has failed to play to a 2nd round pick level and Conway not shown the production he showed in the USHL, Penn St, and in BCHL

By moving Foley off top line he is also forcing the opposition make choices that are more difficult in match ups

I’m sure since you are so blind to Pinho’s skill this doesn’t occur to you. Pinho creates offense himself but he most definitely creates space for his line mates. Between concern about Wilkins ability to create offense with his skating/puck handling skills Bjorkqvist should have more room to set self up himself to #core

Now you have forced a decision do you defend the Conway line with your 2nd or 3rd best defensive line. Choiose 2nd line Foley who is quite capable even on his own to create offense has a mismatch in his favor. Go the other way and maybe Conway has the space he’s lacked to score goal like he was thought to do. Yes vs lesser teams but Conway has gotten very hot. Duhaime and Printz have the muscle and skill to own the boards and give Conway more of a chance to position self to get in scoring position or at least to maneuver into that position

It also is not as absurd as you make it out. Conger was recruited to be a top 6 guy later years, in a way he’s getting training at that slot while still on 3rd line. O’Neill best skill seems to be his passing ability therefore having Foley elevates his play.

Conger hasn’t shown to be a top 6 player yet. Isn’t O’Brien supposed to be the future for PC up front?

PC has tonight’s game to get everything in order as PC needs to get 7 out of 8 points against the Boston schools the rest of the year and win the rest to themselves into a safe position to get an at-large berth.

1. You do remember Conger broke his wrist early in the 2nd game of the season and didn’t return till December right? I’d guess he’d be just reaching where most players were back in November

2 clearly you missed the point. Conger is in reality playing 3rd line. Foley on his line gives him a chance to elevate his game, forcing opposition to makes choices how to defend PC

3. It’s kind of funny but you have 6 top 6 forwards not one. Now lowering the snark a bit yes I would say O’Brien is pretty much penciled in for top 6 next year, Conger probably is put on which ever line he fills out best

4. Out of the gate I suspect they would be looking for more out of a Jack Dugan then O’Brien, he’s 1 1/2 years older (he’s actually less than a year younger than Foley is but he spent a pg year at Northwood and now in USHL, to me it sounds aligious to Fregoe’s path to PC. So both get top 6 slots, Dugan getting Foley’s slot, O’Brien more likely Oinho’s. I would bet if paths go as expected we don’t see either as seniors either.

Re: Providence College regrouping and on to St. Paul

I am sure Xlax will find something bad to say about this one....

Yep...that power play against the second worst PK team in the country was atrocious for the second straight game. Don't even bring up the point they scored two PP goals against Brown as one was on a delayed penalty and Brown wasn't playing for some crazy reason and the other was a wrist shot. They really are struggling with possessing the puck during the PP and finding the open man.

Bryson is starting to get the Walman syndrome of not playing defense as the second Merrimack goal was a direct result of him losing a puck along the boards. This is at least his third time he has lost the puck behind the PC net directly leading to a goal.

Dope.

Re: Providence College regrouping and on to St. Paul

Well I will agree the PP has been disappointing. Not having a big shot at the top doesn't help. Last night you could see where they are missing Walman with that hard shot.

Anyway, one can always pick apart times in games that were issues but overall they totally outplayed Merrimack most of the game as evidenced by the number of shots MC had...

Onto the Boston weekend. 2 tough road games but I don't think this team will be intimidated by either of the B teams. Both teams should have their number one goalies back from World comp...(shoot high on Woll :p )

And the third goalie from the USA team just shut out BU while BC only got a tie in Vegas. Nate doesn’t win much in the regular season or hockey east tournament in Boston. Only time I can remember them doing well in Boston is the Frozen Four run!

Did PC happen to do anything right last night? I missed the game but know an expert like you would be able to answer this.

Re: Providence College regrouping and on to St. Paul

Pinho named Hockey Easter Player of the week.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Hockey East Association announced on Monday (Jan. 8) that Providence College’s Brian Pinho (North Andover, Mass.) was named Hockey East Player of the Week. It is the first time that Pinho has garnered Hockey East Player of the Week accolades in his career.

The Friar captain led the team to two victories last week on the strength of two goals and three assists. On Wednesday in the 32nd Mayor’s Cup versus Brown, Pinho notched a goal and an assist and registered three points in a 5-2 win over Merrimack on Saturday night. He became the 52nd member of the program to reach 100 career points after his assist on Wednesday night against Brown. In four games since the winter break, the senior has posted three goals and five assists.

Providence returns to action this weekend with a pivotal road trip beginning at Boston College on Friday (Jan. 12) and Boston University on Saturday (Jan. 13).

Both games will be rough as they both have PC's number historically. I especially don't like playing BC after they lose to MTU and tie NMU. Jerry and company will really want to turn that around against PC.
