Prospective Top Freshman in 2012-13

Re: Prospective Top Freshman in 2012-13

Mario Lucia, Zemgus Girgensons;), Mike Reilly, Jordan Schmalz...Just to name a few
If Lucia plays up to his potential I think itll be him.

On another note, sorry idc what ncaa says, I dont see Grimaldi as a freshman. That goes for any other kid coming in who plays a couple games as a freshman and then gets hurt. He's no longer a freshman imho. Why you ask? its more than just about hockey. He'll be totally adjusted to college life, juggling school and hockey even though he was injured. Knows the guys, knows the system, knows his school responsibilities, knows the compete level/speed, knows the life. That's not what the idea of being a freshman really is to me. He's basically maintaining his roty eligibility not really a true freshman. Even if he bests what Gaudreau did last year, wouldn't be as impressive.

Mike (the youngest, and a defensemen) is the most talented. Smaller in size, but highly skilled. Broke Joey LaLeggia's BCHL record for most pts scored by a defenseman.

Reilly outproduced Laleggia's final season but neither of them had the BCHL record for pts. by a defenseman. That record is held by Campbell Blair with 109 pts.

He's a first round draft choice, so he could be. Will probably depend on how soon the Rangers need him. From what I've read, they aren't going to rush him. My guess is that he plays a few years at Minnesota.

If they let McDonagh play three years of college before going pro, they'll let Skjei do the same. He's not even close to one and done kind of material.

Yes he is a freshman. Don't see what the big deal is over a ROY award. It will probably go to someone none of us expected anyways.

Grimaldi should not be considered a redshirt freshman because he is adjusted to college life? I wonder if the NCAA has ever thought of this... I'll see if we can't get them on the phone, I'm sure they would love to hear more about your opinions on injured athelete's eligibility.

Come on. Agree with him or not, they were valid points.

Re: Prospective Top Freshman in 2012-13

Agreed, and I think your points were valid too. It's an interesting discussion. I can see both sides.

I actually can see both sides as well... If Grimaldi were to win ROTY there would be many that thought some other "true" freshie got screwed. If I had to guess, I would think that Rocco could care less about this stuff and just wants to be out there playing hockey. I think he will be going for Hobey anyhow...:D

Exactly. I would hope Rocco would be more concerned about winning a National title rather than some pointless ROY. The Hobey would be nice though.:)

Not totally out of the question, which says something about his talent.

Exactly.... Rocco doesn't have time to worry about ROTY... he is too busy worrying about girls showing too much skin

Get with the times. That was last year, this year The Minister is all about the boobies.

FWIW, all the players mentioned in that line of posts are '93s (Grimaldi, Mike Reilly, Schmaltz, and Mario Lucia).

Does 4 games and practicing with a strong college team for a few months give a player that much of an advantage against players who played a full season last year and practiced with inferior teams? IMO, it is probably a wash. What Grimaldi gained (the college life experience) is probably equal to what he lost (playing/practice time and growing as a player). I don't think Grimaldi cares, but IMO because he is a freshman, he should be considered at that level in determining awards.

I would go back and re-read the conversation :)
